I find it odd that when you watch movies that are set in the future, they often play these weird games, but not the games we know now, like football and basketball.

Do you think that some other team sport with ever become popular in the US that hasn't already been introduced and popularized?

I seem to recall a recent discussion about MMA. Regardless of what one thinks about the sport, it certainly has seen an explosion in popularity. You could have shown the octagon 20 years ago in a movie set in the future and it would have evoked much the same 'feel' that you're referring to.

It's not a team sport, though, and it would seem obvious that a NEW team sport would be much less likely.

I'm thinking something like "thrashball" or some other game that we haven't seen played yet.

Most movies seem to modify a current sport into a much more violent version. Roller Ball had ties to hockey in it for example.
MMA is a modern version of the Roman gladiator fights, without weapons and animals. Hell they even promote it as such in some of the smaller leagues i.e. Gladiator Challenge.
I do not see a "new" sport coming in, but the possibility of a modified version of one of our main sports could happen, especially as fans get tired of the same old crap.

I think someone needs to come up with a sport capable of maintaining a large-scale audience.

I could see some sort of technology-based sport gaining popularity.  Like robots fighting or something like that, similar to how a team of people work together in Nascar.

Another possibility is some kind of war simulation...paintball or something.

The Versus channel used to run a telecasts of a sport called Slamball.  It was basically basketball on a court made out of trampolines.  I found it strangely entertaining.  Maybe because it looked like one of the fictional future sports Dave Gray mentioned.

Personally I think the sport from the movie Real Steel would be fantastic. Robots beating each other into oblivion? What could possibly be more entertaining than that. Not that it's really a sport mind you. :)

I still find it odd that Soccer is SOOO HUGEE in every country but the US.  I remember being in Montreal several years back when the World Cup was going on and asking a waitress some questions about the World Cup (which I knew relatively little about), and this group of guys drinking and watching the game looked at me like I was some sort of nut.  I guess it would be like watching the Super Bowl at a bar and having some guy ask what the Super Bowl was all about.

There was a show a while back called "BattleBots" which was pretty much robots fighting each other.  Grant Imahara (from Mythbusters) was the winner, and is how he got his start.  (Bet you didn't know that.)

Anyway, I loved th shit out of that show, and thought that there was a lot of room to grow.  I'm surprised it never took off.  You could've had different classes and rule sets.  It was in its infancy, and suffered from a lot of matchup problems, but was very, very cool.

I doubt it would be soccer.  While it has made a foothold, it really is anti the way american sports head.  Baseball is declining because it is an ideal radio sport but lousy TV sport not fast paced enough.  US sports fans aren't real interested in any sport that often ends in a 0-0 tie. 

Yeah.  For a game we made up, it was super awesome fun.

I was just thinking about that show the other day.  I wondered whatever happened to it.

I just don't see any excitement in watching robots fight each other. There is a monetary consequence but if I want to watch a fight, I want to see physical consequences. I know the robots get damaged, but so what. It is just metal.

If we could find a way for giant robots to fight each other in outerspace, I'd be all for it.  It would be too Robotech or Voltron to miss.

No what's genius is the overdubbing of two guys who don't speak a word of english with two Americans and giving them names like Kenny Blankenship and it actually ends up adding to the humor.
