Title: NHL - If the playoffs started today (week 3)
Post by: wyvernmcd on October 28, 2011, 06:05:46 pm
Apologies for the lateness of my posting since I was busy at work on Thursday, I was unable to post. The standings that I will be putting up are from games that finished Wednesday night so for now we are skipping that Washington finally lost a game ;D.

Hats off to the Blue Jackets for not only getting their first win of the season but by beating the Red Wings as well (a game not many people, myself included, gave them a chance to win that game).

Looks like the Panthers are trying to repeat their trades of "yesteryear" dropping younger players for older veterans that may have 1 to 2 seasons left as they got rid of David Booth to the Vancouver Canucks (also in the trade was another player and a draft pick for 2013). He was a fan favorite but what ticks me off about the trade is that he didn't know until right before the pre-game warmups/skate that he was scratched off the roster for that night's game and then later on had to find out that he was traded.

Almost sounds as bad as the Montreal move of firing the assistant coach for their "lack of scoring". I have issues with this because while I was watching FLA @ MTL near the end of the game, the Montreal Goalie called to the bench to be pulled to get the extra attacker ready at the end of the game but could not get the attention of the head coach so he was just standing there until the assistant coach called him to the bench. His "reward", getting canned from the team because they were one of the worst teams for scoring power play goals (apparently his responsibility). So much for doing you job and getting rewarded for it  ::) ::)

I am digressing so without any further delays, here are the week 3 results of if the playoffs started today:

* Statistics courtesy of NHL.com (dated 10/27/2011 @ 12:00 pm EST):

West teams that dropped out of last weeks list are:
The Minnesota Wild and the Phoenix Coyotes

Matchups look like: Stars v Ducks, Blackhawks v Blues, Avalanche v Oilers, Kings v Wings

One interesting note; who do you think has the lowest payroll AND is on this list of teams (no its not the Panthers).  ::)

Its the Dallas Stars (according to Cap Geek.com). They currently have the most "cap" room of all the 30 teams. Just thought it was interesting how the high payroll teams always are the ones noticed at the top rather than the better playing teams, though time will tell if they can hold their position.

On to week 4 of the campaign

Good stuff, man...thanks!

I am riding three goalies on most of my fantasy squads from the 8 western conference teams listed above. Kari Lehtonen in Dallas and Jonathan Quick in LA have been nothing short of brilliant so far this season. Of the two, I'd give Quick the best chance of maintaining the hot start, just because Lehtonen's blueliners don't challenge the puck nearly as aggressively as the Kings' defenders do, and I think Lehtonen is going to wear down a little bit as the season goes on. My 3rd goalie from that list is Hiller for the Ducks, and he's had a decent, though inconsistent, start to the season. Still, if Hiller is healthy, he has some insane moves in the pipes, and I'd draft the guy just so I have an extra excuse to watch Anaheim play. Though, since I have quite a few Corey Perrys and Bobby Ryans, that really isn't a problem. ;D

Best sleeper call in my drafts...I grabbed the second year Bruins C, Tyler Seguin in the 17th-18th rounds in most drafts because I just love watching the kid skate. He has the same kind of fluid feet as another of my fave skaters, Pavel Datsyuk. Tyler has been a point-per-game guy through the first couple of weeks, and I'm thinking it isn't a fluke.

Hockey is like little league sports over half the teams make the playoffs.

The NFL is like little league sports...they both use a ball.

(translation: Do you have anything worthwhile to post, or are you just honing your already-impressive chump skills?)

I am loving what I've been seeing from the Panthers this season. They're playing hard, which is nice to see
