Title: Quarterbacks: The Old and the Play-less. Post by: BigDaddyFin on November 06, 2011, 06:31:50 pm I didn't want to hijack the other thread.
We keep talking about what's going to have to happen if we draft Andrew Luck blah blah blah Chad Henne sucks blah blah blah Matt Moore is angry at numbers blah blah blah ad nauseum. So let's consider some shit now before we find ourselves going down the same road again. We have in the past gone with stopgap veterans at QB (Frerotte, Pennington, Trent Green, Daunte Culpepper). We've had the throw enough shit at the wall approach with unproven guys and other team's backups and see if it works (AJ Feely, Tyler Thigpen, Chad Henne, Matt Moore, Cleo Lemon, John Beck). So let's look at the quarterback picture for what it is. 1. Everyone is assuming we're going to get Andrew Luck. So do you want Andrew Luck on the field competing against Matt Moore and (insert third QB's name here) in a battle of young players... OR 2. You draft Luck and we can discuss start or sit later, (I don't see why he can't start) and go out and get a veteran as a backup to mentor the kid? Or 3. We don't get Andrew Luck. Matt Moore is the starter next year, same thing, go with three young guys and see who wins or get a veteran as a backup to mentor him? I was thinking about this because last night the Mrs and I were in a bar and it came up in conversation that at least until Dan Marino and Bob Griese was at the midway point of his career, Shula ALWAYS had a vet he knew backing him up. Marino had Strock for awhile and then later they picked up Jaworski, Bob Griese had Earl Morrall. We haven't really gone with that approach in awhile and I think it might be worth returning to regardless of who our qb is next year. |
