Title: Most overused sports phrases
Post by: Phishfan on November 21, 2011, 10:37:47 am
OK guys vent on the sports phrases you see overused and drive you crazy. I'll kick it off with "franchise QB". It gets used way too much and in fact is so overused it is frequently used to describe prospects who turn out to be anything other than a franchise QB.

What have you got?

"Heroic/Hero". "It's a war". It's just a game after all.  :)

I really hate the term "getting untracked".  It seems like it should be to "get on track".  Getting untracked would seem to be a bad thing, but you hear it all the time when teams start to get going.  For example, "after going 0-7, the Miami Dolphins have finally gotten untracked."  No, my friend, they have actually gotten on track!

Also, I hate how everything run wide by a wide receiver in the NFL is a "reverse", when, in fact, the ball must first go one way, then reverse field for it to be a reverse.  Handing the ball to a wideout running wide is actually called an "end-around".

Here's one I see a lot:  "He is a player's coach".  What exactly does that mean?

"The Chart says..."  Notice that no one has ever seen the chart or what the specifics are.  This is a convienient excuse for coaches to say oh no I played the percentages rather than admit a stupid decision cost them the game.

I hate hearing people saying "good leave" during a pool game. Most of the time it means you got a lucky one after missing a shot you actually tried to make.

One team "wanted it more" than another...

Agree on the end-around thing, making it worse is that an end around hand off to another receiver on an actual reverse then gets labelled a double reverse! Argh!

Here is one for people with kids playing little league, "Good eye". The ball could be rolling across home plate and someone will yell this out.

"as the"  You'll see this in literally just about every game write up.  Player X performed Y statistical feat AS THE team A's nickname defeated team B's nickname Winning score-losing score.

I'd agree with this one, with the exception of the Steelers since that's were it started.  However, I never here the Steelers suing it.
