Title: Tony Sparano Fired
Post by: jtex316 on December 12, 2011, 04:20:36 pm
He was served his "Walking Papers" today.

Todd Bowles becomes new interim head coach.

It's kinda funny that he got fired today after Todd Haley got fired. It's almost as if Ross was like "Oh, one team just fired their HC...maybe we should fire ours after a loss, too".

He won't fire him after an 0-7 start but will fire him during a 4-2 run including a 1-point loss...odd timing.

Seems like Ross was waiting for Miami to be "officially" eliminated from playoff contention. That would make some sense. I wonder if they will also be announcing the hiring of Carl Peterson to start the search for the next Dolphins head coach which seems likely.

^ Mathematically, yes. But there was no realistic way in hell the Dolphins were making anything but the top 5 of the NFL draft order next season.

True, but no need to jump the gun if your Ross. When the inevitable happens than you make the call. If the one in a million chance happens that you do in fact make the playoffs, then you have given the man every available opportunity possible. Once the playoffs were officially eliminated, any chance that Sparano would be brought back were also officially eliminated and then you can make the call knowing no one is going to question your decision.

I believe they are already outside of that aren't they?

Hard to say. There are three teams with worse records, and several tied at 4-9.

This was a very good time to pull this move.  It's done, it happened after elimated from the playoffs (which means he gave Sparano chance to turn things around, even though we all knew it was impossible).  It also, and most importantly, gives you the ability to start courting candidates and not get out-hustled by teams like Jacksonville and KC.

ESPN seems to believe it doesn't matter who we "court," though because as long as Ireland is there, no one decent will even entertain offers from Ross. Thoughts? -EK

I don't know if anyone knows exactly what kind of player choices Ireland made because of the whole Parcells thing. If someone like Cowher actually said he wouldn't even think about it unless Ireland was gone, then maybe Ireland really is a problem and needs to go? I dunno. I haven't heard anything about that.
