Title: Fantasy Baseball: Anyone interested?
Post by: Brian Fein on January 04, 2012, 10:59:06 am
I'm considering putting together a fantasy baseball league.  5x5 scoring, weekly lineup changes.  Not sure much other details yet.

I'd like to get 10 teams minimum.  Is anyone from here interested in participating?

Absolutely...count the Sandlot Nimrods in on some of that action! ;D

I prefer, and have much more experience with, daily set leagues, but I don't really "hate" any fantasy sport, especially baseball or football. I even won the only weekly set baseball league I played in last season, a small money ($35) roto league over at RTSports that one of the Uber Wars guys talked me into playing. I liked it enough that I had RTSports hold my $160 winnings so I could take the strategy I used last year and try applying it in one of their $150 leagues. I actually missed the draft in that league last year, came out with an autodrafted squad with 4 guys on IR, 6 2B-eligible players and one closer. I figured out a waiver strategy, stuck to it, and won by such an insane margin (27 pts) that the eventual second place team owner sent a league email to congratulate me on the win...at the beginning of August.

Besides, you know I enjoy battling you in the boxscore, Brian...and AZ too. AZ (and Lil_B) always give me loads of trouble in these TDMMC leagues.

So I made a league.  Everyone interested - please PM me your email address so I can add you to the league.

I have a first poll question for league setup:

The scoring set is 5x5...

You play your opponent, let's say the final score is 6-3-1

The result should be:

- You get 6 wins, your opponent gets 6 losses for that week
- You get 1 win, your opponent gets 1 loss for that week

Just a quick clarification,I'm sorry if it came off as I decided not to play because mecadonzilla joined, I have no problems with him...(after rereading the thread, it could be interpreted that way)..I joined to make 10 so the league could be played,(nothing was decided),then Brian already had someone else, with in an hour or so of my joining.

Sorry no...I wont play in a head to head baseball league,never...If given the choice of being castrated with handle side of a wooden spoon or play in a head to head league...I'll take castration, twice on Sunday....and still wont play....

LOL B....if you don't mind me asking where does you extreme hate for the H2H format in Fantasy Baseball stem from?

Title: Re: Fantasy Baseball: Anyone interested?
Post by: bsfins on March 07, 2012, 03:49:34 pm
Sure...

Short answer:I think there are too many ways to "tie",and it makes the system fundamentally flawed to me...

long answer, makes me sound like a psycho...

Since I commit to playing....I'm all in,I can't say well I'm in last place screw it,and forget about it....I spend lots of time setting up my line up,reading ways to tweak my line up,watching MLB tonight every night, watching all the games on the MLB innings package game mix channel.....Then end up with a stat line like 3-3-4,5-4-1,4-4-2...I can have a great week, and end up in an EFFIN TIE! Baseball doesn't end in a Tie,then why should fantasy....Hockey has shootouts,so games don't end in a tie...

An example....
Stroke,Brian,Az,and I are all tied in the standings....

Stroke and Brian are playing each other Stroke wins 5-4-1,they have Average statistical week..
AZ and I have and Epic statistical week,Darwin Barney hits for the cycle twice in one week...We each have a pitcher throw a No-no...We end in a tie...3-3-4 We both fall in the rankings...Stats wasted...

It makes me so mad,so frustrating to end in a tie, play for a tie, have an awesome week to fall in the standings,or not be able to make up any ground.

If you play with points...There is only one way to tie...You both score the exact same amount of points....In head to head, there is 1-1-8,2-2-6,3-3-4,4-4-2,5-5-0....
I understand the balance, and not weighting a certain stat over another...It ends in a tie....

I put too much into it,get too frustrated, and become un-bearable to be around for 6 months of banging my head against the wall...for and effin tie....When I play it feels hopeless,I constantly feel like I'm drowning...So then I'm walking around like the incredible Hulk, pissed off,and generally pissy mood...

If I lost 500 to 499 every week...Then fine,someone won,someone lost...I could accept it,fix that,feel like my changes make a difference...

I had something similiar happen to me in Fantasy Football all season long.  Of the 12 week regular season there were 8 weeks in which I lost but had the second or third most points of any team that week.  I missed the playoffs but had the highest total number of points of anyone that season.  Everytime someone played me that had a moster game.

I didn't say I'd play,so no need to change the format...I was asked why I hate the H2H format,and I answered...

I won't be able to make it live, I have to work.  I'm sorry, but 11 am on a Saturday is not a good time for a draft.  One guy's opinion.  So how many people total is that not able to make it live?  I'm not trying to be a dick, but it seems like a few people are going to miss it.

All of us have busy lives....but this date and approximate time has been out there for quite some time. I have made my plans for Saturday around this draft date and time. If you can't make it set up your lists...IMO we should not be changing it now.

Title: Re: Fantasy Baseball: Anyone interested?

I agree with this.  I set the league up in February.  Its not a surprise.  We'd need 10+ people to agree to change it now.

Not sure what would be a better time.  These things always have a few absentees.  Its impossible to get 12 people across the country available at the same time.

Title: Re: Fantasy Baseball: Anyone interested?
Post by: Tenshot13 on March 27, 2012, 10:13:40 am
I did come up with an alternative...I said Sunday night a while ago and it was dismissed because Sportschick said she probably couldn't make it, and now she might not make this one.

Don't worry about it.  I don't want to cause any problems.  I'll set my autopicks.  Let's have a fun season.

I had an 8 AM auction draft (3 hour monster) on the morning we set our clocks forward a few weeks ago. I half expected a bunch of folks to miss the draft, and was pleasantly surprised that all 10 people were able to make it.

I don't have any problem with this league's scheduled draft time.

Title: Re: Fantasy Baseball: Anyone interested?
Post by: Brian Fein on March 27, 2012, 04:50:45 pm
Just read this on ESPN home page:

The first weekly roster lock will occur at 6:10 a.m. ET on Wednesday, March 28. Leagues will remain locked until Monday, April 16. Leagues drafted during this period will have their rosters locked as-is post-draft. Make sure to draft your players to the positions you want to use them at (including the bench) at the time you acquire them.

So sounds like you will have to set your lineup DURING the draft.  I don't really like this.  For teams with auto-draft, it will put the best player (ie highest drafted) in the starting lineup.  But that means you better not draft any DL players.

Game 1 is April 4th.  Why the need to lock on 3/28?  This makes no sense.

Gotta admit that the league set-up here has my mind 100% boggled. You created a league with a "weekly roster lock," but then created a league setting that allows for 7 transactions per week. Why would you need a transaction limit when you can't adjust your roster during the week?

I really had no idea about the weekly roster lock...I apparently missed that post.  If I had seen that, I would have made it really easy for the league to get back to an even number of teams, as I would have politely said "thanks, but no thanks."

I don't have an issue with a weekly roster set in roto leagues, and am even willing to give it a shot in h2h...but the 7 transaction limit is still making me scratch my bean a bit.

Also...my original comment was almost three months ago . You expect me to remember that? ;)

(and the transaction limit was never noted at that time)

Chad is in now....

Also, I noticed there is a DH as a starter spot. Does this have to be a DH or can you use any hitter in that spot?

Title: Re: Fantasy Baseball: Anyone interested?
Post by: Brian Fein on March 30, 2012, 09:41:36 am
The intent is that any batter can be the DH.  I'm not sure the fundamental different between DH an U.  If I need to change it, I will.

Having looked at the players eligibility, I think it need to be U, since they have DH listed as a position and only certain people are eligible at DH.  In previous leagues, ALL players were eligible at DH.

Title: Re: Fantasy Baseball: Anyone interested?
Post by: Sunstroke on March 30, 2012, 01:13:58 pm

Yeah, a DH slot only allows players with the DH position eligibility. I am in one keeper league that just did away with the DH slot. There just aren't enough quality DH's to go around.
