While no team in Miami has won anything since 2006, and only 2 championships of any kind in the past 15 years, right now seems to be a great time to be a fan of Miami's professional sports.

MLB - The Marlins just got their new stadium, are starring in Showtime's series "The Franchise," and have gone 20-8 in May (with 1 more game to play this month), setting a franchise record for most wins in a calendar month.  Attendance overall is up, and the future is looking bright for the new-look Marlins.

NBA - The Heat are playing in the Eastern Conference Finals and are favored to win by most analysts.  It would be their second NBA Finals appearance in as many seasons.

NFL - The Dolphins, with a new coaching staff and arguably their best draft in decades, are scheduled to appear on HBO's "Hard Knocks" this fall.  The anticipation of improvement this season is higher than usual.

NHL - The Panthers returned to the playoffs this season after winning their first ever Southeast Division title.  The team that bounced them in a double-overtime game 7 is now playing for the Stanley Cup.  Next year figures to be even better, as some of Dale Tallon's farm system prospects start moving up to the big team.

Overall, it is a pretty exciting time for Miami sports.  I'm pretty happy to be watching it all unfold.

I remember feeling this way a few years ago, but in regard to coaching.

At one time, we had: Riley for the HEAT.  The Fins either had Jimmy Johnson (or Wanny when he was still a hot name).  The Marlins had Leyland, I think...  And the Panthers had a hot name (won some award for coach of the year or something like that.)

Riley was coaching the Heat around 2006, which would have been the Saban era.

Boston Celtics - Currently playing the Heat in the ECF


New York Mets - Division rival with the Marlins


New Jersey Devils - Currently in the Stanley Cup Finals and eliminated the Florida Panthers.



If it weren't for me being the massive Dolphins Fan that I am, you all would probably consider me the Anti-Christ of sports right now haha

He was a two term Miami Heat coach. His first stint ran through Shula, Johnson, & Wanny.

I didn't think it was going to be much of a series, especially after the Celtics lost the first two.  But the Heat are showing they are vunerable. 

I am just a casual basketball fan, but here is how I root.

1. Celtics
2. Whoever is playing the Heat  (that isn't a permantant hatred of the team, actually, it is more like who ever is playing against Lebron, if he switched teams again, I would stop rooting againt the Heat)
3. Cleveland.  (I would love to see Clevland win the Championship before Lebron.  Yeah, I know -- fat chance.  I would even be tempted to root for Cleveland in a match-up against Boston for that to happen.)

Call me the optimist, but adding to the list...the University of Miami seems to have the right guy in place and, if the NCAA sanctions aren't of the death blow variety, Miami should be quite good in the next 2-3 years.

My teams:

Boston Bruins:  Bounced by some guy named Holtby in R1.  FML.

Boston Celtics:  Did me proud by giving the Heat everything they could handle, and more, in the ECF.  Who knows what this team could have done had Avery Bradley's shoulder not come apart V Philly?

Miami Dolphins:  Super Bowl bound, baby.  All they need to do is buy tickets like everyone else.

Boston Red Sox:  The best .500 team 170 million dollars can buy.  Life is good.

Red Sox vs Marlins this week.  Should be interesting.  Should gauge by errors rather than runs.  The Marlins have fallen apart after their best month in franchise history.

If I remember, Doug McLean was coaching the Panthers that year... 

Expectations  was very High those years in Miami  with Riley (HEAT).  JJ(PHINS), Leyland(MARLINS), McLean (PANTHERS).  I remember the papers talking about suppose all 4 major sports team brought in champions that same year... The city of Miami would go nuts if that ever happen.   

What Sports town/city brought in champions from 3 or more major sports teams in the same year? 

All the sports overlap so it depends on what you classify as a "year."

Detroit - Tigers and Lions won their respective titles in 1935, the Red Wings won in 1936.

New York - Mets and Jets won it all in 1969.  The Knicks were champs in 1970.


There's been a few examples of 2 titles in the same year.


Pittsburgh -  Steelers and Pirates in 1979.  Steelers and Penguins in 2008


Boston - Pats and Red Sox in 2004.  Red Sox in 2007 won the title as the Boston Celtics's 2008 championship run was beginning.


I'm sure there's more examples, these are off the top of my head.  A quick google search led my to this nugget:

In January 1981, the Philadelphia Eagles lost the Super Bowl to the Oakland Raiders. In 1980, the Phillies won the World Series for the first time, the 76ers lost to the Lakers in the NBA Finals, and the Flyers were defeated by the Islanders; this was the only time in history that one city had competed for the championships in all 4 major sports within one year's time (had the three losing teams won, Philadelphia would have held defending championships in the NFL, MLB, NBA, and NHL).
