Title: Miami Herald States Obvious about Ireland
Post by: EDGECRUSHER on September 09, 2012, 07:18:00 pm
http://www.rotoworld.com/headlines/nfl/240498/fins-gm-ireland-could-be-in-serious-trouble

Citing a friend of Dolphins owner Stephen Ross, the Miami Herald reports GM Jeff Ireland will be in "serious trouble" if the team "bombs" in 2012.
The Dolphins are on their way after Sunday's 20-point loss to the Texans. Per the Herald, Ross does not have "blind faith" in Ireland and would be willing to fire him if things go south. Another friend of Ross said Ireland would likely not survive if the Dolphins went 5-11 this season. As the Dolphins continue to pile up losses, expect fire-the-GM talk to become louder and louder. Ireland did an incredibly poor job of surrounding rookie quarterback Ryan Tannehill with talent.
Source: Miami Herald

Very shocking that a team who finished 6-10 last year and is now starting a rookie QB lost it's first game on the road against a very good team. NOW Ireland's job is in jeopardy? After the obvious happened?

We beat Oakland and Jets the next 2 weeks and the Herald will stop posting this obvious stupidity.

Firing Ireland at end of season does nothing to help us immediately. Need to do it now or else we will have nothing ready for the draft.

I'm not trying to poo poo on anyone's hope here, but am I the only person who laughs aloud at someone saying Miami will beat the Jets I'm two weeks after the way both teams played today? The Jets dropped nearly 50 on a Bills team that was supposed to be defensively improved, and they never even unveiled their super-secret whatever it is Wildcat package. Meanwhile Miami... Well, we all saw it. -EK

Um, yes, the Jets did use their Wildcat formation.  It was pathetically ineffective.

But yes, given your ongoing glowing praise for the Jets' QBs, it is not at all surprising that you would laugh out loud at the suggestion of the lowly Dolphins besting those twin titans.

My mistake. I was told they didn't. I was watching Miami. I have no love for Jets QBs, but let's be for real- Sanchez's stat line at the end of the day looked a heck of a lot better than not just Miami's QB, but most of the starters across the board. No, I'm not going to nit pick who he looked better or worse than, but no one other than Matt Ryan comes to mind. Was it a fluke? Maybe. But be for real- at this point, Miami would be at least a TD dog even at home against them. That's reality. -EK

A lot of the Jets points came because Ryan Fitzpatrick pulled a Ryan Tannehill and kept getting intercepted in his own end. That being said, I see your point. The way the team played today, assuming ANY victory is a foolish assumption. There are no easy wins, we are the easy wins.

He very likely should be in serious trouble.  He's made some horrible decisions this offseason and his reputation is stained.  He needs to be replaced with a GM that know's and trusts Coach Philbin and that Coach Philbin can work with.

Perhaps the most serious sign that he is in trouble.  Three of his draft picks, Michael Egnew, Lamar Miller and Rishard Matthews, were inactive for this game.

Go read the original article.  The statements are speculation from unnamed "friends" of Stephen Ross.

More irresponsible journalism just to give people something to make themselves feel justified.  Sick of media making up stories.

A name to keep in mind IF/WHEN Ireland is fired

Bill Polian

He wants to get back into the league. He wants to set his son up with a job so you gotta put up with his son. But he would bring instant credibility to Ross and the franchise as he is well respected by everyone. He also was very high on Tannehill pre-draft. I also don't think there would be a personality conflict with Philbin/Polian as Philbin is very "dungy-like" in his demeanor.

And with a 1st, TWO 2nd, and TWO 3rd round picks someone like Polian would love that I am sure.

You cannot fire your front office every year.  We have to deal with at least two years of Ireland.

Parcells "quit" two seasons ago.
Sparano was fired last season.
Suppose Ireland is fired this season.
What are you going to do if Philbin has another bad year next season?  Fire him too?  Ross would have a worse reputation than Dan Snyder by that point.

Philbin is Ireland's pick, right?  I say they live and die as a pair.  Miami won't be able to get a good coach while they insist on keeping their GM, and they probably won't even be able to get a good GM if replacing Philbin is off of the table (see Cameron, Cam).

As much as I dislike Ireland, we're pretty much going to have to ride him and Philbin through the next 2-3 years just to give this organization some stability.  We can't go changing everything almost every year.  At least we've got coaches and a GM who actually want to be in Miami for a change.

The way I've rationalized it is I'd rather be wrong about the GM/coach and have the Dolphins win than to be right have have them lose.

No, instead it is the players that he personally handpicked for this team.

I mean, seriously: who is the best player that Ireland acquired for Dolphins?  It's not Paul Soliai or Brandon Fields.  It's not Jake Long, Randy Starks, Davone Bess, or Dan Carpenter.  Is it Dansby?  Bush?  Pouncey?

I stand by my statement that this new trifecta (Ireland/Philbin/Tannehill) has until the end of next year to show something.  But Ireland has more than made his bed.  He paid a stiff price for Marshall, then traded him for peanuts (and has already completely wasted half of the peanuts on two guys that 1) couldn't make the 53-man roster and 2) wasn't worth activating for week 1).  He traded up for the fragile Daniel Thomas while ignoring Ryan Mallett.*  (And yes, "fragile" is the correct word for a backup RB that is held out of nearly 25% of his games due to injury.)  He traded his best CB in a league dominated by passing attacks.

* You might be inclined to read this as an endorsement for Mallett.  It is not.  I am simply stating that by ignoring the fans/media (a good portion of whom were clamoring for Mallett's selection), Ireland positioned himself as a scapegoat, exactly as Cameron did when he passed on Brady Quinn.  I firmly believe that had Cameron drafted Quinn (even if Quinn had still sucked), he would have gotten at least one more year in Miami to develop him.  When you compare Quinn and Henne as college QBs, it is difficult to believe that Parcells would have discarded Quinn as he did Beck (and that's presuming that Parcells would still have been brought in after 2007).

Ireland has been here for 5 drafts. Plenty of time to have built a team that at least can make the playoffs. Yet we are far from that.

He should have gone and Philbin allowed to bring in his own man.

I'm not too high on Polian because of what Indy looks like right now. His son had a great deal to do with the team they have right now.

If Bill Polian is in charge yes, but the son......no its more of the same.

But he picked them.

And passed on guys who are making headlines such as Ryan in Atlanta. Jake Long more than likely leaves after this year, meanwhile Ryan is taking Atlanta to the playoffs likely for the 3rd time in his 5 years there.

I am not adverse to replacing Ireland, but who do you replace him with? I liked Polian until the past year or so. I also like Charlie Wasserly but he is also a retread.....and he is older

Someone new? A scout from another organization...Crap shoot IMO.

In Ireland's defense, he most likely did not have the final say while Parcells was there and now he is being asked to build a team in a mold completely different than what Parcells tried to do. It is essentially starting over.

Eric DaCosta of Baltimore would be a good choice.  He's done a lot of the scouting work for Ozzie Newsome.  He's young, and hungry.

Hmm...
Tony Gonzalez or Anthony Fasano?
Michael Turner or Reggie Bush?
Roddy White or Brian Hartline
Julio Jones or Legedu Naanee?

If you don't think surrounding cast has one thing to do with Matt Ryan's success, you're fooling yourself.  If Matt Ryan were a Dolphin, the fans would have burned his house down by now.

You're making the point to get rid of Ireland. He's been behind the Naanee, Hartline, Bush additions as well. We are outclassed at most positions on the feild going on 3 years now. Ireland has not only failed to bring in talent that can make the playoffs, he's struggled to bring in talent that can even compete at an NFL level.

It doesn't matter what coaches we bring in, we need to upgrade the talent or the team will go nowhere. We can't just continue to be out-talented for years waiting on Ireland to make some smart pickups. They should have got rid of him last year when they brought in Philbin so we can start fresh. There's absolutely no way Philbin is successful with Ireland as GM. Not when Ireland has continually failed to bring in talent that can compete in the NFL.

He traded up for the fragile Daniel Thomas while ignoring Ryan Mallett.*

It is impossible to judge if passing on Mallet was a good or bad thing until Mallett gets an oppertunity to either prove himself or prove he is a bust.  Brady is going to try his best to prevent that evaluation.

Correct, but he's the guy that picked the players that play like shit on Sunday.  What has Ireland done in 4 years that deserves his stay?  Correct answer: Nothing!!

I don't understand some people on these boards.  They want everything to take "time to develop" but pulling the plug on young players after 1 - 2 seasons is completely okay.

Bottom line:  Ireland is fucking clueless.  It's really not even a discussion.

Ireland should have been fired with Sparano. But he wasn't.

I'm not ok with starting over every season. I'm not ok with the "keep firing everyone until we win something" mentality.

I actually think Ireland has done some things well this year. But of course most people have a bug up their ass about him and won't stop to see that.

I just want a little consistency to make us stop looking like the NFL's revolving door. That reputation hurts far more than anything Jeff Ireland has done.

Very early still to speculate much about this. Only 1 game has been played and it was vs a team Miami never had a shot of beating. Come Week 9 or so once half the season has been played then we will all have a better idea of what this team is and where they are going. If the young kids Ireland has brought in are starting to improve and pay off. Until then its just way too early.

I mean if Miami is getting beaten badly by the likes of Oakland, Arizona, Indy,...etc then there is a serious issue. If Miami is winning some games vs the bad teams, and hanging in there vs the good teams then there is a little something to build on and making a change would be silly.

Week 1 has just been played, very early.

Why is everyone giving Miami a free pass with the idea that Houston was a team they "never had a shot of beating" ?? You take away Tannehill's 3 INTs and the field position it gave the Texans, and the defense held Houston to a 10-9 Dolphins win. -EK

Little more than 15 min, but yeah. The Fins front 7 on defense is very strong. Oddrick is a DT playing DE, few teams will push Miami around this year. Oliveria Vernon was also just throwing guys around last week. Might not show up in the stat sheet but when I watched the game the 2nd time he was a rookie playing like a big boy. Koa Misi with 11 tackles (10 solo) played well also.

That is silly. Polian built super bowl teams in Buffalo and Indy. And the Indy team not long ago had a perfect season going into Week 16 before they decided to sit everyone. Not having a back-up QB in place was a mistake, but it was his only mistake let's not re-write history. If Peyton goes down today you think Denver is gonna be any good? Please! They will be just as bad as Indy.

Knocking Bill Polian and his resume is just downright laughable. It really is.
