Title: Observations from the Raiders game you don’t see on TV
Post by: CF DolFan on September 17, 2012, 08:53:18 am
1- It’s nice to have the old cheesy Miami Dolphins song return. The fans seemed to really appreciate it. It’s our tradition and we sing it loud!

2- The Raiders were dying in the third quarter and I can’t overemphasize that. A 1:00 pm game in South Florida to start the season? What a concept. So far I’ve heard Dan Marino, Joe Rose, Keith Sims and Jimmy Cefalo talk about it since the game. We can’t let fans comfort dictate game times Mr. Ross!

3- The atmosphere of this game seemed like old times “before” the game. I'm not sure if it was the rainy weather before the game or if it was planned but the "Hollywood" vibe wasn't there. I don't even think the Orange carpet was out.

4- The Dolphins need to rework the introductions. They introduced the defense and began with Cameron Wake, Dansby etc. and ended with Richard Marshall. It was very anti-climatic.
Some Dolphin fans are much worse than opponent fans.

5-Many Raider fans spend a lot of time, effort and funds to support their team. It’s kind of sad to see them sulk away wearing full on Halloween kits with their make-up running.

6- Our special teams coach is the most involved I have seen since Mike Westhoff and I think it shows. He yanked a guy of the field and replaced him with Hartline after the offsides penalty and let him have it. Prior to that I thought he was going to get a penalty because literally he is on the field yelling to them right up to kick off.  Intense guy but they are responding.

7- Wayne Huizenga looked good yesterday. I think the fact he isn't majority owner has given him some peace of mind.

8- Half-time entertainment was Run-DMC without Reverend Run and cheerleaders from the 70s, 80s, 90s, 2000s, current and future. 60 year old cheerleaders dancing and singing to “It’s Tricky” and “Walk this Way” are odd enough but having little girls sing and dance to
I met this little girlie, her hair was kinda curly
Went to her house and bust her out, I had to leave real early
These girls are really sleazy, all they just say is please me
Or spend some time and rock a rhyme, I said "It's not that easy"
Is just plain wrong. Not sure who planned that one.

I thought I read in an article they would play the old song after scores where we had the lead or tied the game but I kept hearing 'Fins" on the TV.

I heard "Fins" only once yesterday ... I think. Every touchdown we had they played "Miami Dolphins Number 1" which would be 5 times plus the beginning of the third quarter. All in all they played it at least 6 times. I don't think this goes against what you said so it could be true.

All I know is I have been at games when they played "Fins" and many people would sing the old song in protest. I didn't see the slightest protest to the old song.

I thought I heard it twice while we had the lead, but maybe it was only once.

Glad to hear the old song is back.  There was a vocal minority who keeps saying "that song is outdated and old" but in the end its WAAAYY better than the crappy Jimmy Buffet Fins version that makes no sense.

The 3-year absence of the old song just made people want it back.

Did you get the 40th anniversary hat? Meet a player from the 72 team?

This was the most fun I've had at that stadium in years.  It was just nice having something to cheer for.  Win or lose, it wasn't embarrassing.  Bush played very well, we scored on the opening drive.  Overall, lots to enjoy.

Still, I can't help but be bothered by the poor value of the experience.  Parking in the cash lot increased to $25, which is obscene.  I don't mind the overall experience costing what it has to, but to "hide" fees in things like parking (at that amount) is totally unreasonable.  A refillable soda costs $11.  For soda.  It's crazy.

To give you an idea of how that differs from other products in the area, I pay $9 to park for the Heat and the same exact refillable soda costs $6.  Still obscene, but the Dolphins are asking double.

This, coupled with the fact that I have to pay for pre-season AND that the Dolphins make me pay $4 to "print" my tickets, in case I want to give them to a friend via email.  The HEAT do this for free.

I just feel nickel and dimed from start to finish.

parking has been $25 for a few years now.  I agree it is too much.  Panthers let you park for free in the past, I think they charge $10 this season, unless you're a season ticket holder.  The Marlins charge $15, but there are lots within walking distance for $10 or less.

Last Heat game I went to, I paid $25 to park as well.  Maybe you can show me where the super-secret cheap parking is.

I don't like the trend to having to pay to get your tickets printed.  The Panthers are doing this as well now.  So, now, if someone is sitting in my seat and I don't pay the fee, how do I prove its my seat?

As for this printing of tickets, why not just get the real tickets? Wouldn't that solve the prinitng fee issue?

I don't have to pay if I just use the tickets they send me in the mail.  But if I want to sell tickets on stubhub or give the tickets away to friends or something, emailing tickets to print is commonplace in the sports world.  Why should I have to pay $4 to print something?  It's no additional work for anyone else.  It's a system that automatically voids the previous number and issues a new one.

"'Cause we're the Miami Dolphins. Miami Dolphins. Miami Dolphins, number 1!"
Everybody....

Sorry, misunderstood you originally.  A lot of teams are now going to paperless ticketing.  I assumed this was what you're doing.  I never understood that either - StubHub prices their tickets out of reasonability by charging a $5.45 "instant download" fee.  So they can mail me a PDF and I can print the tickets myself.  I shouldn't have to pay someone else for my efforts.

Agree, but nothing nickel and dime about those charges. ABSURD. You know why the charge it? Because people continue to pay it. It is called "captive audience". We got you for 3 hours OR more and and they count on you breaking down, esp. if you bring kids.

Load up pre-game and live through it. I just wonder how much the owner gets and what goes to the league, if any. If the cup has the NFL logo on it, expect to be screwed!

Next to beating the Jets a few years back, yesterday's game was an incredible experience. Not only did we whoop ass, I got to meet and take a pic with Duper and McDuffie, got the the nice little throwback hats they gave out, and I got to walk onto the field after the game for the first time ever. Unforgettable to say the least. Hoping the wins keep piling up.

I'm part of that vocal minority, but damn, you're right Brian. I caught myself singin' right along.

Stadium concessions are not subject to revenue sharing.

Here's the thing about the song...

When the fins are winning and just scored the 5th td of the day, it's the greatest song on earth.  But when you're down 31-0 and they magically scored a garbage time fg, no one wants to hear "you're talking super bowl" or "Miami dolphins #1".

It's all about when you play it....

Still always better than jimmy buffet though.

I actually like the Jimmy Buffet song.  Maybe they should play it after touchdowns, then the fight song after field goals and extra points.

^^ Because YOU like it?  No, thanks.  Its horrible.

Maybe they should play the T-Pain version too.  Cause it was so awesome.

The T-Pain version was horrible.  I'll agree with you there.

One more thing: The giveaway at the stadium this week, the 1972 hat, was great.  Very good quality for a free hat.  Also, though it has a small Publix logo on the side, it's not full of ads.
