Title: Atlanta is in the playoffs Post by: el diablo on September 25, 2012, 09:59:18 pm One year removed from their epic collapse, the Braves make the playoffs in dramatic fashion. Down 2-3 in the 9th. Freddie Freeman drills a 2 run walk off home run. Go Braves!

Yeah, big feat there. Title: Re: Atlanta is in the playoffs Post by: el diablo on September 26, 2012, 08:30:40 am Its not too late to jump on the bandwagon, Brian...
Title: Re: Atlanta is in the playoffs Post by: CF DolFan on September 26, 2012, 08:50:22 am They are set up for a storybook ending to Chippers career.
I remember Ozzie Smith's last game. It was in the playoffs against Atlanta. His last at bat he popped up over by the third base dugout in Atlanta. I'm not sure why but I always hated he went out that way ... although he received a huge ovation by the Atlanta crowd. I remember Chipper's first hit and look forward to seeing his last at bat for nostalgia's sake. The first was an infield single as he had been brought up at the end of the year. I'd hate for him to go out like Ozzie but I guess worse things could happen. Title: Re: Atlanta is in the playoffs Post by: Landshark on September 26, 2012, 09:00:09 am Against the Marlins. Yeah, big feat there. Funny how the Marlins let Joe Girardi go and he won a World Series with the Yankees. Then they let Fredi Gonzalez go and he leads the Braves to the playoffs. I wonder what will happen if they kick Ozzie Guillen to the curb? Title: Re: Atlanta is in the playoffs Post by: el diablo on September 26, 2012, 09:27:16 am We'll find out when he goes to either Detroit or Baltimore next year. I emphasize, next year. To have Chipper go out as a champion would be awesome. It would take the sting out of this year's Dolphin season.
Title: Re: Atlanta is in the playoffs Post by: Brian Fein on September 27, 2012, 10:15:57 pm The Marlins front office didn't get along with Girardi. Or Gonzalez. Or Guillen. Hmm. Common thread...?
The only way the Marlins succeed is if Jeffrey Loria fires himself, and takes his little weasel son in law Samson with him. Title: Re: Atlanta is in the playoffs Post by: el diablo on September 27, 2012, 11:23:26 pm .....no, I'm not seeing a common thread there. But, you're right about Loria.

The only way the Marlins succeed is if Jeffrey Loria fires himself, and takes his little weasel son in law Samson with him. And that's the problem with Loria/Samson. Letting go of competent people because you don't like them. That's the wrong thing to do in sports. Like Jimmy Johnson once said when he was Dolphins coach, "A guy can be my best friend in the world. However, if his backup is a guy I can't stand but is performing better, I have to make the change. Title: Re: Atlanta is in the playoffs Post by: Fins4ever on September 29, 2012, 04:26:16 pm How did everyone become Braves fans? I am betting that it was because Ted Turner owned both the Braves and Turner Broadcasting Network and you were a captive audience. Anyone from Atlanta??? Keyword being "from". Nasty city.
Any Cubbies out there since WGN had a captive audience as well??? Loved Harry Carey. Steve Stone, not so much. Don't remember their names from days gone by, but the Braves announcers were some of the most "fair and unbiased" I have heard. Title: Re: Atlanta is in the playoffs Post by: el diablo on September 29, 2012, 08:57:31 pm My grandmother made me a Braves fan. It didn't hurt that they were on TBS back in the day. Enjoyed when they played the Cubs, so I could flip back & fourth between TBS & WGN.

Pretty much everyone in the southeast used to be Braves fans if they didn't come from somewhere else. A lot of us didn't leave them although the Marlins and Rays came to town. Title: Re: Atlanta is in the playoffs Post by: mecadonzilla on September 30, 2012, 08:35:52 pm I was born a Braves fan and have been upset ever since TBS stopped showing their games. It didn't matter where I lived, I could always watch my favorite team if I had basic cable.
I've lost touch with them these days because it's just too difficult to watch them play day in and day out. It's hard for me to be the diehard I used to be only getting to see ESPN highlights and the very occasional nationally televised game. I'm psyched to see them go to the playoffs again, though. Chipper needs another ring for his retirement. Maybe, just maybe, I'll get to see them if they meet up with the Rangers in the World Series. (my dad buys Ranger season ticket packages and we've gone to the last 2 Fall Classics) Title: Re: Atlanta is in the playoffs Post by: el diablo on September 30, 2012, 08:41:41 pm I'm super-psyched also. Chipper came back for one more shot. He had a spectacular year. They couldn't win one more for Bobby. Hopefully, they'll be able to do it for Chipper.
Title: Re: Atlanta is in the playoffs Post by: el diablo on October 05, 2012, 09:33:27 pm Well, Atlanta was in the playoffs. Still a great year.
Special shout out to CHIPPER! Thanks for the memories. Awesome career. Next stop, Cooperstown. Awesome career. Next stop, Cooperstown. I think the Cardinals have it in them to pull off a run like last year. Title: Re: Atlanta is in the playoffs Post by: CF DolFan on October 06, 2012, 08:44:54 am The Braves errors and lack of hitting with people on base lost the game for them. With that said the in-field fly rule call was absolutely ridiculousness and killed a basses loaded rally attempt. This will certainly make history for the wrong reason.
Like I had previously mentioned I was hoping Chipper could have went out better than Ozzie. Kind of funny that he goes out just like he came in ... on an infield hit. Title: Re: Atlanta is in the playoffs Post by: BigDaddyFin on October 08, 2012, 06:21:56 am The last time I saw that many angry Braves fans was when Kent Hrbek picked Lonnie Smith up by the jock and threw him off the bag.
Title: Re: Atlanta is in the playoffs Post by: EDGECRUSHER on October 08, 2012, 11:27:03 am To me, that was worse than the Seahawks/Packers call. The infielder was about 70 feet out of the infield and you only make that call so that the fielder doesn't drop it on purpose to try and get a cheap double play. The infielder was never camped out under it and the Umpire only called the rule at the very last second.
I am not a Braves fan, but that was disgraceful and taints the whole season. It was actually Ron Gant. Lonnie Smith was on the bases ahead of Gant but it was Gant who was pushed off of the bag.http://www.unathleticmag.com/2010/07/23/five-historically-horrible-calls-in-mlb-history/ (http://www.unathleticmag.com/wp-content/uploads/1991-ws-wrestle-tag.jpg) During the 1991 World series after a single, Ron Gant rounds toward second base but heads back, and that’s when Twins’ pitcher Kevin Tapani throws back to first. Twins’ first baseman Kent Hrbek then wrestled Gant off first to get the out call. In what ended up being a seven game series where five games were decided by one run it was an iffy call to say the lea Title: Re: Atlanta is in the playoffs Post by: Fins4ever on October 10, 2012, 08:21:18 pm I was born a Braves fan and have been upset ever since TBS stopped showing their games. That is because Ted Turner (owner of the Braves AND Turner Broadcast System TBS) sold the network. Not sure of details, but as I remember it was a messy divorce. |
