Title: Why do we still have Daylight Savings Time? Post by: Brian Fein on November 05, 2012, 05:58:33 pm These morons need to quit screwing around with the clocks and just have Daylight savings time be "the time."
What's the reason we need the sun to go down at 5 PM in the winter time? Just to make everyone more depressed? Its ridiculous that its not even 6:00 right now and its pitch dark outside. Way to ruin perfectly usable hours. I don't get the need to keep swapping around. Like anyone likes "standard time" - just leave it in daylight time all year and quit screwing with it. I totally disagree here. I say let Standard time be "the time". I absolutely love this time of the year!! It's dark by 6:15, which means on weekends and school breaks, I can go shrimping or shark fishing earlier (nighttime boating activities). Additionally, I saw the switch to Daylight Savings time as nothing but a major inconvenience. We would lose an hour of sleep for a day in the spring. Then my kids would have to walk to school in the dark for a while. Also when they were little, putting them to bed was a challenge as the sun was still out at 8 pm, just like putting my grandkids to bed in the summer is a challenge now. Title: Re: Why do we still have Daylight Savings Time? Post by: Spider-Dan on November 05, 2012, 06:44:44 pm The reason why we go back to standard time is because the population doesn't have much of a stomach for having children walk to school before the sun comes up. In Cleveland today, dawn was at 6:35 (EST) and sunrise was at 7:04. In January, dawn isn't until ~7:20 and sunrise isn't until ~7:50. On fulltime DST, you'd have kids walking to school in the dead of night.

I've been running in the evenings after work. Walked out of the office today and it was dark. No desire to head out for my run. It's depressing. Title: Re: Why do we still have Daylight Savings Time? Post by: Brian Fein on November 05, 2012, 07:33:40 pm Get the kids some flashlights. Everyone wants longer daylight at night.
Title: Re: Why do we still have Daylight Savings Time? Post by: Spider-Dan on November 05, 2012, 09:53:11 pm Sorry, if the safety of The Children is at stake, it's basically a dead issue. People in this country will agree to all sorts of crazy laws if they are told that The Children are at risk. (This is why most new anti-piracy laws are being wrapped in the flag of "stopping child pornography.")
Title: Re: Why do we still have Daylight Savings Time? Post by: SportsChick on November 05, 2012, 10:34:36 pm Not all parts of the county follow daylight savings and those areas are a-ok
Title: Re: Why do we still have Daylight Savings Time? Post by: dolphins4life on November 05, 2012, 10:58:11 pm I welcome it because my skin is taking a beating from the sun
Title: Re: Why do we still have Daylight Savings Time? Post by: mecadonzilla on November 05, 2012, 11:56:14 pm Anyone ever ask folks in Arizona or parts of Indiana what they think of a lack of Daylight Savings Time?
Just curious. Never heard it from the horse's mouth, so to speak. Title: Re: Why do we still have Daylight Savings Time? Post by: Spider-Dan on November 06, 2012, 02:07:44 am Not all parts of the county follow daylight savings and those areas are a-ok Right, but that's not what Brian is talking about. He's talking about Daylight Savings all the time. And while full-time Standard results in some earlier nights (and ridiculously early dawns) during the summer, full-time Daylight results in pitch-black mornings during the winter. One of those is a bigger deal (for parents, anyway) than the other. Title: Re: Why do we still have Daylight Savings Time? Post by: Brian Fein on November 06, 2012, 08:47:18 am Simple answer: start school an hour later. Why does it need to end at 3pm? If its such a concern, run school from 9 to 4 (or whatever) and save the parents some after-school care money.
Title: Re: Why do we still have Daylight Savings Time? Post by: Landshark on November 06, 2012, 09:31:19 am Simple answer: start school an hour later. Why does it need to end at 3pm? If its such a concern, run school from 9 to 4 (or whatever) and save the parents some after-school care money. Because typical high school athletic practices last for a minimum of two hours. If school ended at 4 pm, the kids would be getting out of practice at 6 pm, which is dinnertime for most families. Also, a lot of kids have after school jobs and they typically start at 4 or 5 pm. Additionally, high school usually starts first and ends first, so the parents are counting on it staying that way so the older sibling can look after the younger one when they get home. All that being said, your point is a good counter measure to the time change in terms of kids walking to school in the dark. It doesn't, however, address the issue of putting the little ones to bed in the summer and the sun still being up. That is a major pain in the rear for a lot of people. Title: Re: Why do we still have Daylight Savings Time? Post by: Brian Fein on November 06, 2012, 11:07:53 am Oh, I only hear a lot of boo-hoo complaining. Dinner after 6:00? Going to bed when its light out? WAA!
Suck it up! Title: Re: Why do we still have Daylight Savings Time? Post by: Spider-Dan on November 06, 2012, 11:14:40 am What's the reason we need the sun to go down at 5 PM in the winter time? Post by: Brian Fein on November 06, 2012, 11:17:42 am For the record, most of this post is tongue-in-cheek.
I do think that the constant time-switching is annoying and I personally hate standard time. I don't know if kids walking to school in the dark is an unavoidable problem. Maybe parents might have to take responsibility and drive their kids to school. Title: Re: Why do we still have Daylight Savings Time? Post by: Spider-Dan on November 06, 2012, 11:34:09 am I think this thread is mostly tongue-in-cheek.
I share your position (as I don't care about driving to work in the dark) but as I already said (sincerely), once The Children are involved, further discussion is mostly pointless. Title: Re: Why do we still have Daylight Savings Time? Post by: SportsChick on November 06, 2012, 02:00:06 pm Random thought from my days of walking to school - beginning of the school year/end of the school year it was dark when I left. Why do we need to change clocks so PART of the school year is in daylight? The change doesn't effect the entire school year
Title: Re: Why do we still have Daylight Savings Time? Post by: bsfins on November 06, 2012, 05:30:27 pm I admit,It doesn't bother me as much as it used to.When I drove for Whirlpool, leaving in the dark in the morning, then coming home in the dark, was depressing.
Hijack by my screwed up thinking, and it's what suddenly popped into my head - Drive in Movies,it's that double edge sword...In the summer it's nice an warm, but the movie doesn't start ill after 9pm..With the time change it the movie starts at 5:30,but it's cold as hell to sit there and watch the movie...End hijack. Title: Re: Why do we still have Daylight Savings Time? Post by: Spider-Dan on November 07, 2012, 11:06:15 am Um, I don't know your parenting style, but if my mom told me to go to bed at 5PM, then I'd better well do it if I knew what was good for me.
I'm not sure if we should legislate around making life easier for the parents of toddlers. Title: Re: Why do we still have Daylight Savings Time? Post by: Brian Fein on November 07, 2012, 12:01:50 pm ^^ Thanks, that was exactly my point.

Post by: Fins4ever on November 26, 2012, 11:24:02 am Anyone ever ask folks in Arizona or parts of Indiana what they think of a lack of Daylight Savings Time? Just curious. Never heard it from the horse's mouth, so to speak. I have lived in AZ. for 3 yrs. and you are correct, we never change the clock. Hawaii is the only other stare. In the summer the days (light) are 14-15 hours long. In the winter, as short as 9 hrs. The worst part for me is the rest of the country is programmed to operate under EST. For example, up until Halloween, the Fins games start at 10 in the morning. After the time change the 1 o clock games now start at 11....Not much better. That sucks! Ever drink a beer and eat chicken wings at 10 in the morning? lol The only advantage is MNF starts earlier. Spider is correct. The kids do indeed walk to the bus stops in the dark. Agree it is a safety issue, but have never heard of anyone getting hurt. Title: Re: Why do we still have Daylight Savings Time? Post by: BigDaddyFin on November 26, 2012, 01:39:39 pm I thought we had daylight savings time so that the kiddies on the farms would be able to help with the harvest before school in daylight (also the reason we have a three month summer break).
That said, since we're not an agricultural society to the degree that we once were, I'd be fine with them changing it. I also don't care if they don't change it. Why? 1. Time doesn't exist except as a unit of measurement. Tell me the exact time. Yes, You!!! RIGHT NOW!!! You can't do it because as you're telling me, the present has become the past. 2. Supposedly time is fleeting. Well you're never going to catch it and make it stop fleeting if you keep changing the goddamn clock. Title: Re: Why do we still have Daylight Savings Time? Actually daylight savings time gives us more light at the end of the day, not the begining. The orginal reason for it being adopted was to save coal during WWI. For the most part argicutural interest oppose the idea (cows don't adopt well to being milked an hour earlier or later) the interest that like it are sports and retail. Your comments suggest a common confusion about DST. What we have in the winter is the normal time. Most people in this thread who oppose DST, seem to actually want DST year round, not the elimination of DST. |
