Title: NFL may make field wider (CFL style)
Post by: MikeO on February 11, 2013, 07:16:32 pm
http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nfl-shutdown-corner/nfl-considered-widening-playing-field-35-feet-may-190404198--nfl.html

The NFL has considered the idea and may revisit it down the road. They feel it will help with "player safety"

That's okay.  I just don't want them to add a 55 yard line  ;D

Is this in the same sense that they are "considering" eliminating kickoffs?

Adding games means more money.
Widening the field doesn't cost them anything.

Adding games, contradicts the "player safety" angle.

Point is - no one cares about player safety when it means more money.

I disagree with this... I think that it is a corporation that has two distinct goals:

Goal A:  Profit for the owners
Goal B:  Safety for the players

...and they are trying to maximize their Goal A, while maintaining acceptable standards for Goal B.

...except when goal A contradicts goal B, then goal A becomes the only goal

Does anyone think these rumors may sway opinion on public funding of Miami's stadium? I mean why spend money to bring the stands closer when the field may need to move closer already?

But goals A and B go hand in hand.  With your stars hurt, your product suffers.  Also, not doing what you can to help with safety means lawsuits, which means less money for owners.

No because something like this is years away and would effect many stadiums

They would be better off reducing the number of players on the field.  Lowers team salaries, adds "space" on the field.

I'm concerned with too much offensive scoring.

Same here. You already can't breathe on a receiver. Giving them more open space, would only add to an already offensively skewed game.

The league ain't.  Nobody talks about the great game they saw --- the 3-0 overtime win.

But a 64-61 game will get great press.

When you see that score roll across the sports ticker, you'll think "is this an NFL football game or a college basketball game?"
