Title: Things you hate to pay for.
Post by: Dave Gray on February 19, 2013, 11:50:49 pm
For me:

- Parking
- Valet
- Cover charge
- Restroom attendants
- Text messaging
- Appetizers

All of these are unnecessary and bother me.

You have to wonder why parking is free in some places and they charge in others.  I hate paying for parking as well.  Here's my list:

-Parking
-Salads
-Reading newspapers online
-Public Wi Fi
-Shopping cart usage (You get your money back when you return the cart but it's still a pain to have to drop a quarter in the mechanism)

Agree with your list Dave, but appetizers?  In what world does anyone get appetizers for free?

For me, paying for air at the gas station burns my ass.  They don't pay for the air, they pay to turn on the compressor.

I refuse to valet park unless there is no self-parking option, in which case I won't make that mistake twice.  If I see a dude in the restroom with a buffet of cologne, I walk out and go pee somewhere else.  Thanks, I can get my own paper towel dude.

I can add also - sodas.  It costs places $0.10 maybe for the water/syrup that goes into my fountain beverage.  Why do you charge me $2.29 for a drink, just so I can pee it out in 20 minutes?

I don't think I should get appetizers for free, but I don't like paying for them.  It is such a great way to unnecessarily inflate the cost of a meal.  I never order them, but when I go out with my wife or a group, I usually end up getting them or splitting something.  It seems so silly to have to pre-eat.  ...especially when some people don't eat everything on their plate to begin with.

-Public Wi Fi

Great one.  That's just one I refuse to pay for.

Same here.  I refuse.  That's why I have a smartphone.

Shipping
Fishing license (Long story)
Software- Anti-virus,firewall,operating system, I get that (I prefer the free versions, but can see why maybe someone would want more)....Some utility software I'm only going to use once or twice...UGH No.
Apps,also qualify too...
Equipment fees to use their product

Modified to add..
My problem is I can't stop thinking about things....While hate to pay for, describes my feelings....I don't think should be free, but not near as expensive...Things like internet, home phone,Cable (satellite T.V.) (Taxes, and usage fess tend to kill these things) Video games is another one, probably shouldn't be free, but too expensive..

(Sorry for the add ons to my post, updating a lot of software, and it keeps restarting my computer)

Me too.  I can understand an establishment like say, Starbucks, providing the service for its customers only.  No problem.  I'll just buy a $2 cup of coffee and enjoy it while surfing away.  But for an establishment to charge a daily fee to use their Wi Fi is ridiculous.

you get free starbucks wifi if you'r eon ATT .. so i don't have a problem with them charging other network users especially if ATT is providing it

i don't like paying for appetizers, drink refills or for movie theater candy .. popcorn i'm ok with since movie theater popcorn is one of those things you can't reproduce easily, but if i want a box of whoppers i can buy it at walgreens for $1 and just bring it into the movie .. i'm not paying $4 for the same thing

I think any Wi Fi capable device can get on Starbucks Wi Fi.  You just have to be a Starbucks customer.  What I was referring to is for example, five star hotels like Hilton or Marriott charging $9.95 per day to use their Wi Fi

I also hate paying any kind of fee.

So, just charge me what you're going to charge me, but don't have it end up being 5 extra dollars than I expect for processing or setup or what have you.

Recently an airline I use started charging for using the overhead compartment for carry-ons. If it goes under the seat it is free. If it goes overhead they charge.

Damn, a lot of good ones here I've always had problems with!

Parking
Air at the gas station (God I can't stand that) I found a Chevron with free air, and it's the only one I'll ever go to.
Cable - I have internet, I find all my shows and sports there. No thank you.
Refills
Bottled water - Sure I'll drink a bottle of water, but you'll never see my ass paying for it. It's WATER
DLC for video games
Xbox live or any "monthly fee" games (eg: WoW)

Oh yeah. The only time I buy bottled water is for hurricane season. Otherwise I drink tap water. (Filtered, but only because it stressed my parents out so much they bought me a Brita...Did you guys know I'm cheap?)

Yes, absolutely.

I hear people complain about bottled water a lot, my only complaint is the amount of plastic we are using because of the craze. You pay a water bill every month also. You aren't getting water for free there either.

I don't pay a water bill every month.

If you get water out of the tap you are paying about three *cents* per gallon, if you are buying it by the half liter bottle you are paying about six *dollars* a gallon.

I don't mind spending three cents for a gallon of water.  I don't like spending six dollars for basically the same thing.

Still not *free*.  More like included in a package deal she pays for.

But you can get water for free at many public water fountains.

Drink refills is a great one.  I hate when they ask you for 50 cents to refill a drink that you already paid $2.29 for at the mall food court.  That's BS.  I reward venues that offer free refills by giving them my business and neglecting those that charge for refills.

Also, as Lil B mentioned, I won't pay for apps on my phone either.  If there's a free version, fine, but it better be a "can't live without it" app for me to pay money for it.

edit to add (since Dave reminded me in another thread): Software upgrades.  I bought software, I have been using it.  Don't tell me I can't KEEP using something I PAID FOR unless I give you MORE money.  That's bullcrap.

I also hate paying any kind of fee.

This is the biggest for me....I hate paying "fees" period. When I ask what something costs I want the total cost and not to be surprised when it comes time to pay that it cost 10 dollars more because of some dumbass fee.

Yeah, I don't get this.  I've stayed at cheap motels ($50/night) and the Wi-Fi is free.  Then I stay at four or five star hotels (paying well in excess of $100/night) and they want another $10 for Wi-Fi.

This is why whenever I have to stay at a hotel, I stay at Best Western.  They're rates are very reasonable, they have free Wi Fi, and most have a free full breakfast (although my wife will give me a hard time about having eggs, bacon, and grits)

Things I hate to pay for...

* bottled water
* napkins (I grab a small stack every fast food visit...saves me on paper towel consumption)
* black pepper (same as napkin example above)
* sex
* online gaming

I want to amend my hating of XBOX live.

I'm beginning to hate paying for it, because I feel that the other systems are catching up.  But in the past, I was OK with the 5 bucks a month or whatever, because I used it a lot and it was very, very reliable.

Now, however, I'm starting to get a bit tired of it, because I use it primarily to stream movies...not so much to play games.

No. Anything where people tell you, "If you put x all over them they are good" really isn't a good food.

Just gotta mix the right amount of butter, salt and pepper into them

I loves me some grits... My two favorite ways to eat grits are:

1) Homemade (non-instant) Cheese grits with bacon
2) Let your cooked grits firm up, then cut the hardened grits into squares and pan fry those bad boys in bacon grease.

Not to derail the grits goodness of this thread, but, I hate paying for bug spray.

^^^ A personal quirk of mine...I've never bought (or used) bug spray, and I don't remember ever having a mosquito bite.

I guess I just taste funny to bugs. ;)

Another thing I hate paying for: Road tolls

What bothers me even more is stoping for them.

Its one thing to pay once to get on the highway.  But I hate going thru NJ, there is a toll ever few miles, each one isn't that expensive but they are annoying speed bumps.  Let me pay the total amount once.
