Title: Joe Flacco gets contract extension
Post by: Landshark on March 01, 2013, 09:52:34 pm
Man, I didn't realize that winning a Super Bowl could get you this kind of money.  Six years and over $120 million.  This guy just hit the jackpot.

If its all about playoff results, then you can't deny the contract. This is what happens when people place all of the praise & blame on one position.

QB is the most important position in all of sports. If you don't have a QB then you suck in this league. The days of winning with a mediocre QB (ie Brad Johnson/Trent Dilfer) are long gone. Once you have a franchise QB you keep them at all costs. If it means they have to cut half the roster to do so then so be it!

Dan Marino in his prime would tear up this league.

This is what will end the NFL in the future. I can't argue your point about the importance of a QB. The current system is in opposition to a natural order. That being of not selling yourself short. Flacco got what he deserved. At the expense of the rest of the team. Without an expanded salary cap, every team will suffer. Flacco will be asked to "re-structure" his deal in about 2-3 yrs. Yet, he couldn't restructure his rookie deal. This is where the NFLPA dropped the ball. They got the rookie cap they wanted. Not seeing that teams would change to "get younger" as a result. Its bad now with one player accounting for 1/6 of the team salary. What happens when they account for 1/4?  Imagine if the NBA operated under this same scale. The owners would be ecstatic about a 26.76 mil salary cap. You would definitely have parity. Because a team could only afford one Lebron, one mid level vet, and the rest are scrubs. This is what the NFL is looking like more & more.

^^^ I completely disagree with you. There is already so much money in the sport of professional football that increasing these salaries, earnings, etc. is what will end the NFL as we know it. People are already being priced out of being able to go to games.

Imagine if Trent Dilfer was  free agent after the year he won the Ravens their first Super Bowl

I think this is a bad contract.  Unfortunately, I seem to be bashing Flacco, despite thinking that he's a good, but not great QB.  Even if he were great, he's not top money great.  I think that the mistake that people make is to point to his playoff success as a reason why he should get paid.  He already was great in the playoffs.  If you don't keep him, you still have those championships.  They don't take down the banners if you get rid of your players.  The question you have to ask is that, from this point forward, is he worth paying to be the highest paid player in NFL history?  I say no.  Perhaps I'll be proven wrong.

Agree.  He's not at that elite level where he can make other players look good/great.  Now with him soaking up so much of the salary cap the Ravens won't be able to pay for the supporting cast he needs.  This contract is great news for the Steelers & Bengals.

Technically he was a free agent because they cut him.

As for Flacco, the Ravens were in a catch 22. You didn't want him leaving because I don't see any better options out there but paying this huge sum is a mistake. They never should have sat on his expiring contract. He should have gotten an extension last year (I think most of us can look back and even say at that point it was fairly clear the Ravens did not have a better option). I'd like to see how this deal breaks down cap wise for each year. I would not be surprised if they try re-working this thing down the road.

I agree.  Guys like Bill Belichick and Ted Thompson would've locked him into a long term deal at the end of last season and would've avoided something like this.

This is just how it is now. Win a SB and you become a god. You got to give Flacco credit though, he was pretty much unstoppable in the playoffs. No, I don't think he's the best QB in the league, but he played like he was in the playoffs. That's why he's getting the money.

I think Linta has helped a few worthless people here in my office get some hefty raises.  :-\
