Title: Over/Under on New Logo/Uniforms Post by: Pappy13 on March 27, 2013, 05:59:24 pm Ok, now that's it official, I'm setting the unofficial Over/Under on the new Logo and Uniforms at 4 1/2 years. Can the Admins please setup an official vote for Under/Over.
I'm gonna go Under. The only way I see it making 5 years is if Miami makes significant strides in the playoffs over the next couple of years. That alone will drive up the marketing of the brand and they'll stick with it, but if that doesn't happen, I see sales decreasing to the point they change back to a look similar to the traditional one within 5 years. Title: Re: Over/Under on New Logo/Uniforms Post by: Spider-Dan on March 27, 2013, 06:15:20 pm I'll take over, going away, and I would love to find the sucker that would put money on it.
Name any major new logo+uniform change for a Big Three (NFL/MLB/NBA) sports team that has been totally scrapped and retconned within 5 years of release. Ever. Title: Re: Over/Under on New Logo/Uniforms Post by: MikeO on March 27, 2013, 06:15:54 pm Over. and its not even close. Considering its a 2 year process with the NFL to change uniforms/logos no way they make a sudden move to something else
These are here to stay a while Title: Re: Over/Under on New Logo/Uniforms Post by: Pappy13 on March 27, 2013, 06:18:35 pm The Dolphins logo from from '89 only lasted 7 years.
Title: Re: Over/Under on New Logo/Uniforms Post by: BigDaddyFin on March 27, 2013, 07:08:15 pm The Dolphins logo from from '89 only lasted 7 years. Yeah but it was also only a minor change I'm going with the over. Hopefully this will be the end of this crap for awhile as I'd really like them to focus on putting a quality team together. I'm sure the change is something they want to be part of it but seriously how many threads did we waste on this nonsensical crap? Title: Re: Over/Under on New Logo/Uniforms Post by: Sunstroke on March 27, 2013, 07:29:16 pm No-brainer on the over...the next change will come 8 years from now, in 2021. Title: Re: Over/Under on New Logo/Uniforms Post by: Pappy13 on March 27, 2013, 07:32:38 pm Over. and its not even close. Considering its a 2 year process with the NFL to change uniforms/logos no way they make a sudden move to something else Alright, considering it's a 2 year process to change the unis/logo then we'll say the over/under pertains to the DECISION to change the unis/logo. They decide to change it again before the 2017/2018 season, the under wins.Title: Re: Over/Under on New Logo/Uniforms Post by: Spider-Dan on March 27, 2013, 08:21:06 pm Again, over by a landslide.
To clarify: would you consider a change like the '97 logo/uniform changes as satisfying this bet? Because those were tweaks in my eyes. I'd say that in order for this bet to be satisfied, the dolphin would need to return to the old pose and re-don the helmet. If the over/under on that is anything less than 10 years, I'm instantly taking the over. Because those were tweaks in my eyes. Any change at all to the logo will satisfy the over/under. A minor change to the uni like changing to a different shade of blue or slightly altering the lettering in some way I'll give you, but anything more than that would also constitute a change. They've had 2 years to get this thing exactly how they wanted it. Just about any change within 5 years is an admission that they didn't get it right. My feeling is that without some help from the team or the players, like the team winning the AFCE and a couple of playoff games or Tannehill turning into the reincarnation of Dan Marino or something along those lines and the merchandising is gonna take a hit over time. It won't happen right away, there will be an initial upswing in the merchandising while all those that just have to have the new stuff go out and get new stuff and from the people that actually like the change, but after a year or two that will wear off and the logo/uniforms themselves will have to carry it. I think that's when they'll realize they've made a mistake and start thinking about making another change to control the damage. I think they are vastly underestimating the power of tradition here. This is a break with tradition and if it were an awesome logo it would be different, but I just don't see that. I see something that is uninspired and lacks new direction. This was change for the sake of change, not change for the better. Got off from a mission, went to the USO and look this is what I saw. Man im so pissed at this logo. Well give me a reason to save my money and keep my current Dolphins gear.

That alone will drive up the marketing of the brand and they'll stick with it, but if that doesn't happen, I see sales decreasing to the point they change back to a look similar to the traditional one within 5 years. The goalposts seem to be moving pretty rapidly, there. How can it be a look "similar to the traditional one" without restoring the very elements that MAKE it different from the traditional one?If you set aside the helmet and the pose, the 2013 logo IS the old logo with "minor changes": it's an aqua-colored dolphin superimposed on a sunburst. How can it be a look "similar to the traditional one" without restoring the very elements that MAKE it different from the traditional one? Those were my comments. That's what I think will happen but just because I'm wrong that doesn't mean the over wins. The over/under is on changing the logo/unis again. If you set aside the helmet and the pose, the 2013 logo IS the old logo with "minor changes": it's an aqua-colored dolphin superimposed on a sunburst. The helmet, the pose, the look of the Dolphin, the look of the sunburst, even the colors are different. What's the same other than the general idea of a Dolphin and a sun? Since the Team is the Miami Dolphins it would pretty tough for it not to be a Dolphin. The only thing they really kept that they realistically could have gotten rid of is the sun.Title: Re: Over/Under on New Logo/Uniforms Post by: mecadonzilla on March 28, 2013, 01:39:44 am The Baltimore Ravens changed their logo within 3 years of moving to their new city. Drastically.
The Jags changed theirs before they first hit the field in '95, but that was due to a legal dispute after the first official reveal. That's all I can come up off the top of my head. Title: Re: Over/Under on New Logo/Uniforms Post by: Spider-Dan on March 28, 2013, 12:00:20 pm The helmet, the pose, the look of the Dolphin, the look of the sunburst, even the colors are different. The look of the dolphin, the look of the sunburst, and the colors have all been changed before. Those were considered "tweaks."Title: Re: Over/Under on New Logo/Uniforms Post by: MyGodWearsAHoodie on March 28, 2013, 01:14:18 pm If the Dolphins marketing team is at all smart, they will keep this logo for a while (other than minor tweaks) then in about 10-12 years start selling throwbacks to the old logo.
Title: Re: Over/Under on New Logo/Uniforms Post by: AZ Fins Fan 55 on March 28, 2013, 03:32:39 pm If the Dolphins marketing team is at all smart...... I think this logo speaks volumes that can answer that question pretty easily. I have seen a few people say it is ok and very few say they love it. This logo is hated by a majority from what I have read and seen and not just on this site. Title: Re: Over/Under on New Logo/Uniforms Post by: MikeO on March 28, 2013, 04:14:04 pm ^^ just reading some general football website many non-dolphins fans seem to like the new logo and thought the old one was lame and corny.

Really? In my day to day life, I haven't heard one iota of support for this new logo. I get a lot of head shakes and laughs when I show them the pic. Title: Re: Over/Under on New Logo/Uniforms Post by: AZ Fins Fan 55 on March 28, 2013, 04:42:05 pm ^^ just reading some general football website many non-dolphins fans seem to like the new logo and thought the old one was lame and corny. I honestly don't care what non-dolphins fans think of our logo just like the Bills should care less about what we think of theirs. They are not the ones who are supposed to be wearing this shit stain of a logo. Not to mention most non-dolphins fans I personally know which is a lot considering I don't live in Florida are in tears from laughter at how ridiculous this thing is. Title: Re: Over/Under on New Logo/Uniforms Post by: Spider-Dan on March 28, 2013, 04:44:23 pm For purposes of comparison, how many of these non-Dolphins fans thought Miami's prior logo was awesome and respect-worthy?
Title: Re: Over/Under on New Logo/Uniforms Post by: mecadonzilla on March 28, 2013, 04:45:55 pm I've never heard one single complaint from any human about any of the Dolphin logos until this one.
Title: Re: Over/Under on New Logo/Uniforms Post by: AZ Fins Fan 55 on March 28, 2013, 04:55:00 pm For purposes of comparison, how many of these non-Dolphins fans thought Miami's prior logo was awesome and respect-worthy? Every single one I talked to thought the old logo was better and they would have kept it over this new one if given the choice. I am not sure that translates to "awesome" or "respect-worthy" as that was not asked but it speaks much the same. Title: Re: Over/Under on New Logo/Uniforms Post by: Spider-Dan on March 28, 2013, 05:34:09 pm I ask because I've seen non-local celebrities wearing stuff like Raiders, Cowboys, White Sox, Sixers, L.A. Kings gear (even when those teams weren't very good), but I've never really seen Dolphins gear sported out the same way (even back when the Dolphins were good).
I guess I underestimated how many people were unhappy with the idea of changing the logo, period. Compared to what the Patriots or Broncos or Bucs did, this change is pretty tame. I see people with Dolphins gear on all the time in Dallas. I'm talking about people just going to the movies, at the mall, at the state fair, etc. I often get a "nice shirt" when I wear one of my many Dolphins shirts around town. There are a lot more fans outside of the state of Florida then you would think.I guess I underestimated how many people were unhappy with the idea of changing the logo, period. I agree with that, being an out of town fan when I wear my Fins gear I always get something said along the lines of "nice shirt" or "hey I like Miami too"..etc. In the NFL there are a handful of "NATIONAL TEAMS" that have very big national following. Miami is one of those teams. They are (in no special order) Dallas, Pittsburgh, Miami, Chicago, San Fran, Green Bay, Raiders. Agreed.....I have a sticker in the back window of my truck and a hitch cover. I get people all the time on the road that pull up next to me with a thumbs up showing off their Dolphins merchandise as well as comments on my hats when I am around town. Everytime the Phins come out here to play the Cardinals the fans come out in in large volume. It is quite impressive. I remember my first game in 96 here in Phoenix when Marino and Jimmy were running the show and I was in awe because I had never seen so many Marino jerseys in one place. So was the flying elvis when it first rolled out. Change the logo will sell more merchandise then keeping the old one. And they will be able to do throwbacks. When the logo only had minor changes the throwbacks weren't noticeably different. Changing the logo was good marketing. |
