Title: 5th round pick Mike Gillislee signs
Post by: Landshark on May 17, 2013, 07:48:37 pm
Saw it on Rotoworld.com.  Glad to see him in the fold and look forward to the heated battle coming up for the starting running back job.

Woo hoo! Go DeLand!!

Trivia ... Mike's high school stadium is where the legendary Bobby Boucher ("Boo-SHAY") played for the South Central Louisiana State University Mud Dogs. Maybe we should nickname him the waterboy?  ;D

Not a bad name, considering that's what he was doing at UF up until his senior year.  I think this kid is gonna really push Lamar Miller for the starting job.

Might be a major steal in the 5th round.

Yeah he better worry about making the team before fighting for a starting job. Beat out Jonas Gray is priority #1 for him right now

And what round was Lamar Miller drafted in?  My point is this.  A good running back can and will be had in the later rounds.

1) Lamar Miller already made an NFL team
2) Lamar Miller played very little in his first year
3) You are asking a 5th round rookie to beat out Thomas and Miller to win a starters job

A year from now if you think this kid can push Miller...fine, reasonable. To think he will THIS YEAR is wishful thinking

Let's see how much playing time he gets this year.  That will be a good indicator.

How about we start with let's see if he even makes the team first!!!!  He was a 5th round pick for a reason. We have seen picks Ireland made in Rounds 2 and 3 be total busts! Not gonna hand a starters job let alone a roster spot over to a 5th round pick in May!!!

I can see you are "geeked up" about this kid but keep it in perspective!! With Miller, Thomas, and Jonas Gray in front of him this kid might have the practice squad in his immediate future. Although he could clearly beat out Gray if he has a good camp. Also if Miller and Thomas look like they aren't up for full time work once camp starts I could see Miami going out and getting a Vet (ie a Michael Turner or someone who is still available) to split time with them,  which would then maybe make it tougher for Gillislee to get playing time this year.

Also undrafted rookie running back  Cameron Marshall out of Arizona St impressed the coaches alot at the first mini-camp. Been reported a few places and Miami Herald had a blurb on it this morning too

He finished first team all SEC. It isn't like he had a decent year in the Sun Belt Conference. I think he makes the team and gets good looks unless he absolutely implodes.

I'd hate to tell you this but you seem to be forgetting this kid's pedigree. He sat for three years at UF behind guys like Chris Rainey and Jeff Demps.  Then completely lit it up his senior year and earned first team all SEC honors. He puts up numbers like he did as a three year starter, he is a first or second round pick.

As long as Miami gets good RB production from whichever RB tandem they go with, Miller-Thomas, Miller-Gillislee, Miller-Gray...then I'm happy with it. If it were "my choice," and I had to make the call right now, I'd go with Miller-Gillislee. I haven't been that impressed with Thomas to this point, and I think Gillislee has the ability to be a better all-around contributor to the offense, rushing, receiving and in pass protection.

We'll see how it goes in camp...

Tim Tebow was all SEC as well. Just sayin!

College is college....this is the NFL! He was a 5th round pick for a reason. Not saying the kid won't make it, I hope he is a superstar. But he will have to fight to make this team. It isn't a given he makes the 53 man roster and if he does its not a given he is even active for games. He has an uphill battle in front of him.

Mike Gillislee is not a quarterback.  Running back skill sets and dynamics don't change much in the transition from college to the pros.  The only thing to worry about is size, which he has.  Mark my words, this kid is gonna push Lamar Miller for the starter's job at some point.

You are praising someone's college accomplishments and translating them to NFL success...it has nothing to do with position.

He was a 5th round pick for a reason. Nuff said

Why do we think Lamar Miller is any kind of lock to finish training camp as the starter?

Being penciled in during March or April meanings just about zero to someone with the lack of experience Lamar possesses.  His NFL advantage over Gillislee is 51 carries wide, which is almost nothing.  I wonder if he learned how to pass block.

I think this RB competition is as open as it could possibly be.  May the best man win.  I would bet heavily the coaching staff feels the same.

I agree on all but one point (Miller spent an entire season in an NFL weight room, NFL meetings, and played in real games, its more than just a 51 carry advantage plus he has the best speed out of all of these backs). I still think Miami makes a move for a veteran RB at some point and brings someone in.

I think Daniel Thomas has a good chance to start and win the job. Be in a time-share with Miller. No matter who wins between those two it will be a time-share at the end of the day.  And I see a vet being brought in to be the #3 back.  I see Gillslee on the practice squad to open the year.

I would love to see a worthwhile veteran come in.  The more leadership in the backfield the better.  It's an area lean on experience ATM.

Tom Brady was a 6th round pick for a reason.  Nuff said.

This discussion is proof that we don't have a hell of a lot of football stuff to talk about in mid May.    ;D

We might want to Ask Jack Del Rio what he thinks about  5th round draft picks.... :D

I don't know,I know nothing about the kid.If he was one of those "1st,2nd rd talent but "  is why he's falling to the 3rd 4th,5th,6th rd guy's  Mike Mayock talks about.I don't think he is.....I think anything is possible,if he contributes this year great...

Imagine if Drew Bledsoe didn't get hurt.  Where would Tom Brady be?

^^ The better stat you should discuss is that Gillislee was the 14th RB taken in the draft.  Watch his highlight reel, and you'll see he runs hard but benefited greatly from great line blocking.

If the Dolphins put a o-line of schlubs out there, I'm not sure he will be as dynamic or game-changing as you guys expect.

Here is his highlight reel.  I can see the line blocks well, but I can also see he's got the vision for finding the open lane and the capability of darting straight for it.  Then if that lane suddenly closes, he'll cut and make guys miss.
