Title: The Irrelevant Miami Marlins Post by: Dolphster on May 20, 2013, 10:28:53 am Eesh, this team is a disaster (starting with ownership). Even with the interwebz, I find it hard to keep up with the Marlins since I moved away from South Florida 7 years ago. But I took a look at their box score a couple days ago and I recognized TWO names in the starting lineup. Looking at what the attendance has been, doesn't look like too many people "back home" follow them anymore either. I'm assuming that they won't be in South Florida much longer.

They have a non-relocation agreement or face having to pay back a lot of money. Title: Re: The Irrelevant Miami Marlins Post by: Dolphster on May 20, 2013, 11:01:51 am They have a non-relocation agreement or face having to pay back a lot of money. Interesting, I wasn't aware of that. Title: Re: The Irrelevant Miami Marlins Post by: Brian Fein on May 20, 2013, 11:23:14 am Add me to the active boycott list. I refuse to give them another red cent as long as Loria is the owner. And there's nothing to lose, he can't move the team. All he can do is sell it. When he does, I'll be interested again.
I saw the other day that, if you look at MLB batting stats, the Marlins are dead last in every batting category except hits (they are 29th, the Mets are worse). And not by 1 or 2, by a lot. The Marlins are an embarrassment. Title: Re: The Irrelevant Miami Marlins Post by: Sunstroke on May 20, 2013, 11:49:36 am They really are pretty bad, from top to bottom...and I don't see a ton of help coming from Fernandez, Yelich, Ozuna, or any of their other young prospects any time soon. Title: Re: The Irrelevant Miami Marlins Post by: Landshark on May 20, 2013, 01:29:27 pm Looks like there's a lot of fans with Brian's mentality. Loria's done some nasty stuff, but taking public money and promising to do better at paying for talent, then going back on your word has made him Public Enemy Number One in baseball. That's money that should've gone to hospitals, schools, and fire/police departments.
If things continue the way they do, Loria will have no choice but to sell. Title: Re: The Irrelevant Miami Marlins Post by: Brian Fein on May 20, 2013, 02:14:11 pm ^^ not necessarily. Thank revenue sharing and the Yankees of the world for lining his pockets even if he gets 1 fan per game. Why should he care, he still gets paid.
The other teams will eventually get sick of dragging the anchor of the Marlins around and MLB will have to step in. Well, the "new" Yankees are trying to drive their payroll down so they aren't paying the luxury tax, and if they aren't spending as much, then Boston and the Mets won't be spending as much, so there shouldn't be as much luxury tax money to distribute. Some franchises are going to have to start paying their own way. As a Yankees fan I have always hated them overpaying for players on the downside of their careers, when they probably have the best farm system in baseball. Title: Re: The Irrelevant Miami Marlins Post by: Dolphster on May 23, 2013, 08:40:46 am The whole "business" side of sports has made me less of a sports fan than I used to be. I don't know if it has gotten worse over the years or if it is just that when I was younger, I was oblivious to that aspect of it. Probably just as well. If I spent as much time watching/playing sports now as I did when I was young and single, my wife would kill me. ;D

If I spent as much time watching/playing sports now as I did when I was young and single, my wife would kill me. ;D Well said. I used to really enjoy baseball as a kid. But seeing how certain teams could just buy their way into the conversation and make bad choices without consequence just killed the sport for me. I don't know if this is a new thing to baseball or if I just didn't realize it until I was older. Title: Re: The Irrelevant Miami Marlins Post by: Brian Fein on May 23, 2013, 12:34:53 pm I think baseball more than others because it seems that teams can't possibly keep their stars. We've seen it recently with guys like Pujols, Wilson, and Hamilton. Guys in the prime of their career get let go or traded because of money reasons, teams can't afford to keep them, etc. Other teams, who have cash to spend, benefit from this.
Every August, you hear about high-profile players getting dismissed by their current teams for a bag of peanuts because they know that they can't re-sign the player next year. Better to get 2 hot dogs and some cracker jacks than to get nothing at all. Title: Re: The Irrelevant Miami Marlins Post by: Dave Gray on May 23, 2013, 01:01:17 pm I see Miguel Cabrera on ESPN all the time and it pisses me off. He's a talent that we raised up through our farm system and then sold him off to be a superstar to someone else. It's irritating.

Words can hardly describe how demoralizing it was, as an Indians fan, to see C.C. Sabathia start against Cliff Lee for game 1 of the World Series. For two teams that are not Cleveland. Baseball needs a salary cap, but also needs a salary floor to prevent teams like the Marlins from doing what they are doing. Title: Re: The Irrelevant Miami Marlins Post by: Brian Fein on May 29, 2013, 09:04:26 am You could practically look around the league and make an all-star team of former Marlins right now.
Title: Re: The Irrelevant Miami Marlins Post by: EDGECRUSHER on June 01, 2013, 11:06:57 pm A salary floor is a must. Just look at the Astros crying poverty despite being a major market. A-Rod makes more than their whole team, that's disgraceful. For both sides.
I wouldn't expect anything to change anytime soon. Title: Re: The Irrelevant Miami Marlins Post by: Landshark on July 07, 2013, 08:04:44 am BUMP
New stadium, same ol' Marlins again. Ricky Nolasco just got traded to L.A. for three minor league prospects. And marginal ones at that. Title: Re: The Irrelevant Miami Marlins Post by: el diablo on July 07, 2013, 10:02:57 am Heard their game against St. Louis yesterday. Ricky should consider himself lucky. Losing on a walk off error. Smh.

Title: Re: The Irrelevant Miami Marlins Post by: Sunstroke on August 18, 2013, 10:00:30 am I'm sure that Marlins fans will enjoy the World Series this year, watching Hanley Ramirez and Ricky Nolasco squaring off against Miguel Cabrera and Anibal Sanchez. Well, maybe they won't... |
