Title: Dolphin Running Backs
Post by: CF DolFan on May 23, 2013, 09:44:26 am
Armando wrote about some of the questions the Dolphins have going into the season and one is in reference to running backs. From all reports the Dolphins think Miller is their guy while they also seem to like the incoming Gillislee. Thigpen has been awesome on special teams but I'm sure would like a bigger role. Does this mean the often injured Thomas is on his way out?

Her's what Armando had to say ...

Uncertainty 2: Who is going to carry the running game? The question is obvious because Reggie Bush is gone and everyone who is left is unproven. The Dolphins love Lamar Miller. As I've written before, he is the heir apparent and is so talked within the team, owner Stephen Ross has mentioned him as a big playmaker for 2013. It's obvious someone internally has been telling Ross to expect big things from Miller.

But the Dolphins do have other choices. Daniel Thomas is a former second-round pick and he sees himself as the successor to Bush. He'll have to prove it. And he intends to prove it. So we have a competition building.

The darkhorse here is rookie Mike Gillislee. I keep hearing his name from club sources. There is an internal excitement about him. There is hope he can factor and perhaps even surprise everyone -- except you, of course, because I just told you what might occur.

I think you'll see more Thigpen in a slot WR role, than a RB.

I think you'll see Thomas and Miller completely time-splitting until Thomas pulls a labia and misses three games, or fumbles trying to stretch for 1 more yard while getting hit by 6 guys.  I think Miller is in line for a lot of carries this year.

And although MikeO says "let's see if he makes the team first" - I think Gillislee will be a factor in game carries, but probably won't live up to expectations unless the o-line play improves.
