My parents suggested I should check it out.

Anybody here know anybody who does it?

I used to know someone who was a carrier. Don't make a lot of money I don't think, but it's still a decent job.

My grandfather worked for the USPS basically his entire life. 40 years or something like that. Retired with a great pension and was able to raise 5 kids on his own, buy a house, etc. He wasn't a carrier. He worked in the distribution center.

If you can get in, I say go for it.

How hard is it to get in?

It sounds like what they do is illegal because you have to pay to take a test to work.  I thought that was illegal

Why would it be illegal to make someone pay to take a test in order to be eligible to work?

Generally if you have to pay to start a job or collect a prize, it's not legitimate

I honestly don't think it is going to be very easy to get into the postal service. At one time it was notoriously difficult and currently the talk is only about postal service cutbacks. I can't imagine that would make it any easier to get in. I would think you may have better luck getting on with a private shipper like UPS or FedEx.

1) starting a job and collecting a prize are not remotely similar
2) even prizes that require payment are not against the law

I'm talking about scams, which there are a lot of out there. 

My neighbors (both husband and wife) are both mail carriers and they have been for years.  They both like their job and make really good money.  They get up early and get home late, but there benefits and salary are worth it if you're there a while.

If you can get in, you should do it.  Its a good living later on.

My aunt worked pretty much straight out of college till retirement (right about 60) for the post office.(she wasn't a carrier,she worked at an office).Her husband worked for UPS,so they made a very nice living. I've known a few other people that have had the seasonal jobs through the post office and really wanted to stay on full time.

As mentioned before,they are hard jobs to get.Most people that do get them,don't tend to leave the job once they get them.

Lets see, so the following are not legitimate jobs: federal employee, public school teacher (in most states), attorney, accountant, actuary etc.  All require you to take a test at your expense to be hired.

^^My nursing boards (BSRN and FNP) were not free.  States are tricky that way about their health care professionals.

That's paying to be certified to work in a certain field, which is a lot different from paying a "processing fee" to a company in order to get materials to work from home part time and make $80,000 per year
