they could have announced this in April when they drafted Sturgis..lol

Everyone saw it coming. This wasn't a real competition by any means

It was obviously Sturgis' to lose but it would have been stupid to cut Carpenter without making Sturgis prove he could handle it.

Congrats to Sturgis for being the first Gator to land the job but I think Armando put it in perspective yesterday. "Incredible that at this stage in camp K Caleb Sturgis is #dolphins most impressive rookie with CB Will Davis second."

He missed kicks so he got the boot.  See ya Carp.  Hope you can hook up with another team

He will probably be on a new team before the weekend.

He will get scooped up.  Lifetime 82% accuracy, and 50% from outside 50 yards.  Ranks 21st all time in accuracy.  Kickers like that aren't a dime a dozen.

He might have to take pay cut from what he was making, but if he is reasonable in his expectation there is no reason for him to not play this year.

Olindo Mare was still kicking field goals in the NFL last year.

Carpenter will be fine.

I think this says more about Sturgis than Carpenter.  We knew he was gone.  I think they just wanted to make sure Sturgis didn't implode or have his leg fall off while kicking.

So, good news.  Good luck, Dan.

I think this says more about Sturgis than Carpenter.

Doesn't say much about Sturgis other than he doesn't totally suck.  Nobody carries two kickers and you got to be pretty bad to get cut as rookie draft pick.

Granted reports are he is a lot better than "doesn't totally suck".  But that was the hurdle in order for Carpenter to get cut.

I'm sure it also helps Carpenter to be released earlier than later at this stage of training camp.  If you know you're not going to keep him, do him a solid and let him move on.  Making sure Sturgis was anywhere near capable was the only thing keeping Carpenter around this long.

Getting rid of him was more indicative of his contract than his skills at this point.  I'm sure he'll be kicking for someone else before too long.

I wonder if that was part of it.  You think Carpenter didn't know it was coming?  Maybe they came to a deal and let him have a chance to find another job, instead of working at Winn Dixie waiting for someone to get hurt.

Good kickers always have a job and they last forever. Had Carpenter been let go week one he would have landed somewhere just about as soon as he wanted. Regardless of his supposed down season he is a very good kicker.

I agree with the general principle, but kickers are one of the few positions that teams often go looking for in the middle of the season, when their current kicker starts shanking kicks that they ought to be making, and teams start losing games because of it. It seems like every year, you see one or two teams signing a new kicker mid-stream.

I am willing to bet Carpenter was begging for it.  If I was in his shoes, I would have asked Ireland to cut me the day after the draft and every day since camp started.  He knew he was gone, the worst thing for him would have been to stay on the roster until the 53 man cut date.

As I had mentioned... It doesn't look like he will be hurting for work.

Work waiting for Dan Carpenter

Former Miami Dolphins kicker Dan Carpenter, released Wednesday, already has work waiting for him.

Problem is, he's waiting on his wife, who is three days overdue with the couple's first child.

Once his wife gives birth, Carpenter will pick a new team. There are a good half-dozen teams around the league looking for a new kicker, including the Green Bay Packers, the Seattle Seahawks, the New York Jets, the Cleveland Browns and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

As a dolphin fan life has taught me one thing he will be a jet. Our first game will be a close one and we will have a two point lead. As time expires he will kick a 62 yard field goal. Actually I think the jets will have a bad year. Luckily Sanchez is their best QB.

^^^ I'd like to see him land in Tampa so hopefully he enjoys the Florida weather!

Lets make it even better (or worse):

The only reason the score is 2 points and not 5, is Sturgis shanked one from the 8 yard line on the prior drive.

Ah, that's too funny.  Glad we dont play ARZ this year.  I liked him, wish him the best, but I dont want him kicking a FG to beat us.

Carpenter has been released by Arizona.

What the hell did they sign him for in the first place? He was only in town for 5 days.

He played like crap in the preaseason game.  Never got a chance to kick off and the one field goal attempt he had was blocked.

One blocked FG attempt = "He played like crap"

Sorry, but blocked FG attempts usually have more to do with either the O-Line or the holder.

You have to be above and beyond (or really really cheap) to oust the incumbent.  Carp and Feeley are about the same guy.  Too bad for Carp.

He'll catch on somewhere, or people will come running to him when a kicker gets hurt.

I am just surprised he signed with a team with a hard chance of winning the job. He isn't a bad kicker, he just made too much. I am surprised he didn't find better options.

He wasn't clutch last year. That is a big deal with kickers. Teams are probably afraid of him right now. I don't think he has or will get as many offers as you guys think.

Too bad they got rid of Tony Sparano as their offensive coordinator.  It would be ironic for the two to be reunited again and witness Sparano pumping his fist when Carp kicks a field goal.

kicker for the Jets is a part-time job. They won't be doing much scoring this year.

The Jets still have Nick Folk.  They cut their backup kicker.  Carp may still not catch on, but I think Folk is on the outs with Fat Rex.

Wow.  Three teams in less than three weeks that said "Thanks, but no thanks."  His confidence must be completely shattered right now.

I wonder what kind of contract he got win ARZ and NYJ.  I wonder if he's still asking premium price tag...

Not anymore. He is a vet minimum player at this point. And I think his NFL days might be over
