Title: Syria kills upwards 1,300 w/ nerve gas- 100's of children's bodies piled high Post by: CF DolFan on August 21, 2013, 04:13:31 pm This has gotten out of control. We won't help because the new regime isn't in our best interest. Interesting to see if we respond to this.

There's a delicate balance between taking care of your own and being the world police.

There's a delicate balance between taking care of your own and being the world police. Hasn't the U.S. been the world's police for decades now? They will keep supporting Assad to the bitter end. The rebel forces have been hampered by infighting now because fundamentalist terrorist cells are trying to get into power.
It is a uber shit sandwich, and we need to stay out of it. It will be messy, and their is no clear side to back. Until the world puts aside it's national agendas and unites against this sort of human treatment, there will always be brutal men slaughtering the innocent. I doubt I'll see any such thing before I die, but it's a pleasant hope. I agree that it is terrible and awful and needs to be stopped, but the US can't go around invading every country like war mongers just because they do shitty things. Agreed that the UN needs to be the one that takes actions.

Of course, but at least it won't be the USA vs Syria. It will be the USA and 10-15 others vs Syria.Title: Re: Syria kills upwards 1,300 w/ nerve gas- 100's of children's bodies piled high Post by: CF DolFan on August 22, 2013, 06:11:01 pm The latest reports put it closer to 1,700.
The UN needs to develop some type of corporate takeover for countries that are deemed mentally incompetent. The UN needs to develop some type of corporate takeover for countries that are deemed mentally incompetent. Many countries around the world would say we are mentally incompetent. Be careful for what you wish for. Normally, I would agree with you...in this case, not so much. We're talking about gas. And I am no scientist nor do I have any military experience, but...gas gets into the air...air circulates and is capable of carrying said gas elsewhere. Drop enough of it and we're talking gas dropped in one place affecting surrounding areas that are keeping their noses out of what is happening next door. Just a thought, but I think this is potentially more catastrophic than we think. Neither side in this fight really deserves our support as they are both terrible groups of people. One commentator said, "Our enemies are killing our enemies." I have come to the conclusion there is no way we should put boots on the ground.

I have come to the conclusion there is no way we should put boots on the ground. I agree....no boots on the ground but I could get behind some limited intervention by bombing their air fields/planes on the ground and certain military installations. As well as maybe a no fly zone with the UN involved. There is no way we can put massive amounts of US military lives on the line going full boar in there. They would face fire from both sides.Title: Re: Syria kills upwards 1,300 w/ nerve gas- 100's of children's bodies piled high Post by: MyGodWearsAHoodie on August 29, 2013, 02:58:07 pm If we go in as a small part of a larger UN operation (e.g. US is less than 30% of the boots on the ground), I am okay with that even if we are the largest single force in the operation.
I am not okay with us going in solo or close to solo like we did in Iraq. Title: Re: Syria kills upwards 1,300 w/ nerve gas- 100's of children's bodies piled high Post by: fyo on August 29, 2013, 04:27:58 pm I don't see boots on the ground here... not in a combat role anyway. It might be possible to support the rebels with a Libya-style air campaign, but as several have pointed out already, it's not clear that having the rebels win would be good.
The most likely scenario, IMHO, is some sort of targeted "punishment" using cruise missiles or even drones. Perhaps there might be a way to coerce Assad to give up the remaining chemical weapons to inspectors, although such a move would likely be precluded by missile strikes. We have our own problems to deal with. Not to mention that we're basically bankrupt.
