Title: Fins 2013 cuts and pickups
Post by: Landshark on August 23, 2013, 02:38:12 pm
They say the first cut is the deepest.  First cuts are on hand after this week's preseason games.   The Dolphins have already gotten a head start and released five players today according to my B/R team stream.   Kenny Stafford, who impressed in the Hall Of Fame Game but has done little since, highlights the names of the dearly departed.

Ah, cutting season. And no Hard Knocks to see behind the scenes.

First round of cuts is due at 4 pm today.  Word is Coach Philbin may go with just two quarterbacks.  That means Pat Devlin and Aaron Corp may be out of a job today.  It's a shame because Devlin was playing so well until he hurt himself.

Devlin won't get cut today.

Devlin won't get cut at all.  Some people like to make stuff up.

The sun sentinel is reporting that Lane and Pruitt were visited by the grim reaper today.

Surprised they cut Lane, but they can use that spot for other TE/FB depth.

Not surprised about this at all.  His play has dramatically regressed.  He no longer Clears The Lane

@PhinPhanatic: Cuts are officially in: Jeff Fuller, Emeka Onyenekwu, Andrell Smith, Nathan Williams, David Hinds and Lance Louis.

 and Javorskie Lane

@PhinPhanatic: RT @OmarKelly: By terminating Lance Louis' contract the Dolphins avoided paying his $1.6M contract. He only had $100,000 guaranteed.

Lance Louis being released is a shock

wonder if Fuller will hit the practice squad?

I doubt it. He was on the practice squad last year not to mention he had Tanny throwing passes to him in college and has been in this system for a while.  He clearly doesn't have what it takes to make it at this level

Not to me it wasn't. I had heard rumblings that his being hurt wasn't what was holding him back so much as that just he just wasn't as good as he had been in the past.

Typically guys cut at the 75 man level don't.  It is the guys cut at the 53 knock down that make the PS.

I'm not so sure. Everyone keeps saying Philbin is talking only two.

he isnt healthy and makes a lot of money. Not surprising really. If he gets healthy Miami could bring him back later in the year at half the cost

Philbin loves Devlin.  If he goes to only 2 QB's, I think Moore has a better shot at getting cut than Devlin.  However, I would personally hate to see Moore go, because he could jump in and start in both NY and Buffalo.  I have a hard time seeing that they need that extra roster spot so badly that they would risk jettison QB talent for a 6th string WR.

All the preseason games are in the books.  Now it's time for the guys on the bubble to start downing some Pepto Bismol as the coaches decide who stays and who goes.

Moore isn't starting over EJ Manuel or Geno Smith. But if NY or Buffalo wants to start Matt Moore....go right ahead!! That is a good thing for Miami!!

Too bad both Manuel and Smith are injured.

Smith isn't. He is starting Week 1. EJ Manuel will be back Week 2.

Smith isn't.

Unless you count his psyche.

And seeing what he did on draft night, that's a huge deal.

RB Jonas Gray was CUT. Not surprised

After the Hall of Fame game his Yards Per carry in the other 4 games were.... 1.1, 1.5, 2.3, and 3.5

I am not surprised Gray was cut.  He had to really outperform Gillislee in order to save his job, and I feel like he didn't.  He declined steadily, even though they fed him the ball relentlessly in the preseason.

In addition to Gray, it's being reported that tight end Kyle Miller and offensive linemen Chris Barker and Sam Brenner have also been cut.

Appears that Matthews and McNutt made this roster but still a few hours to go

Tyms would make a good practice squad candidate.  Also remember that this team may be interested in castoffs from other rosters.  The bubble guys who survive today may not make it to opening day.

Packers cut TE DJ Williams. He is a Charles Clay clone but a guy who Miami might be interested in. He might get claimed before Miami gets a shot at him though.

Chad "The Hound" Bumphis, Marvin McNutt, Kheeston Randall and Austin Spitler were cut today.  Of note, all of the 2013 draft class survived the final cuts so far

Here's a list of all the cut players. Of note, the Dolphins kept only four receivers but eleven defensive backs.  Let's see how the churning shakes out over the next few days.

I saw that Evan Rodriguez was cut today. Think they forgot about him or did he piss someone off after the 53 were set? Lol  ;)

Got rid of Rodriguez because they signed FB Tyler Clutts (who was just cut by Houston.)

Defensive lineman A.J. Francis, who the Dolphins had targeted for the practice squad, was claimed off waivers by the Patriots.

So much for Rodriguez moving to TE and so much for the Fins NOT wanting a FB. Makes me wonder why they didn't just sign Vonta Leach if they wanted to have a FB on the roster. Head scratching.

Not like salary cap space was an issue

This.  Sometimes I just dont get this organization, or at least Jeff Ireland.  See that NE claimed AJ Francis off of waivers, was hoping they could sign him to the practice squad.

The fact they let both DT's Kheeston Randle and AJ Francis walk (both looked promising) leads me to believe the plan might be to bring back both Starks and Soliai next year. Because signing just one still leaves them with NO depth at a key position.

Miami will have around $20 mill in cap space, re-signing both would eat up a large chunk of that and will prevent Miami from being "players" in the free agent market.

Time will tell I guess. But at first glance that's how I see it.

Omar Kelly saying he is hearing that Will Davis or Jamar Taylor could go on the 8 week IR tomorrow with their injuries. Being talked about but  he doesn't expect it. Taylor is NOT practicing today at all and Davis has a boot on his foot.

Dion Jordan back at practice today in limited role

Various sources peg the Dolphins cap space this year at anywhere from $16 million to $22 million, with an even greater range for next year (two examples of extremes would be phinsider and overthecap). Still, about $20 million this year and a comparable figure next year sound right.

Those numbers place the Dolphins among the teams with the most cap space, so I don't see why they wouldn't be able to make some significant moves. Signing bonuses for Starks and Soliai could certainly take a chunk out of that, but there are several contracts that need a good look in 2014 (cutting Matt Moore would save $4 million, to name one example).

The Pats released AJ Francis who Miami cut last week and wanted on their practice squad.

I would expect Miami to grab him up quickly
