Title: Re: Overrated Directors

Super bump!

I'd like to add:

Wes Anderson
He's really more of a writer/director, but I find his movies to be damn near unwatchable.

M. Night Shyamalan

"The Sixth Sense" must have been the blind squirrel finding the proverbial nut.

Totally agree.  Even a broken clock is right twice a day.

Who in the world ever said anything positive about Michael Bay? The man sucks as a director and everyone knows it. He's definitely not overrated...his movies just make more money than badly-directed movies should, and it's mostly because of (and was because of) Bruckheimer and Simpson.

I agree with The assertions on Smith and Lucas though...THX was ok, but Lucas' only other well-directed movie was A New Hope. Kershner and Marquand did much better things with Star Wars screenplays when given the chance.

Gotta disagree on the Wes Anderson comment though. I can't consider any of his movies unwatchable...Darjeeling Limited was one of the best films of last year, as Life Aquatic and Tenenbaums were in years prior...and the direction in those movies was superb. (see the opening scene of Darjeeling).

Michael Bay is the best director ever.  Didn't anyone see Transformers?  Armageddon?

The thing that I hate about Bay is that he can't capture subtlety.  Everything has to be obvious, and over-the-top, to the point that it's distracting.

It's like they blare the sound at you, shake the camera, etc, to the point that it's distracting, but not very good.

have you seen the commercial starring him? I forget what its for, but basically he pokes fun at himself for being over the top.

Cyan, in terms of directing, you're right with Anderson.  He's good behind the camera.  But his scripts are terrible to me.  I just can't get into that style of film at all.

I would never pay to see a Michael Bay movie. The direction and the ploys are so annoying. They are over-the-top movies and even when he gets to do a touching scene he screws it up with some dumb car chase right behind it.

Is this the guy that made Bad Boys and Bad Boys II in Miami? No wonder the traffic on I-95 and the Rickenbacker Causeway was held up. He probably didn't know that he was at the wrong location shooting the wrong scene.

This has inspired me to start a favorite directors thread.

Michael Bay is precisely the genius behind the Bad Boys movies, and they were both fabulous pieces of art.  They were THROWING CARS for crying out loud!  That's great cinema!  Coast Guard choppers flying under the McArthur Causeway?  WOOO!!!

:D

I loved Life Aquatic and enjoyed what I saw of Tannenbaums. Havent seen Darjeeling yet.

Speaking of "one time flameouts" does TDDMC have a special wing in the ROD for bad film directing and editing during a Dolphins game or worst announcer or radio host covering the Dolphins? ;) ;)

I agree with Shyamalan...Quit trying for another super twisted ending!  (I did like Signs a lot though)

Who ever was responsible for the awful embarrassment that was Pearl Harbor needs to be scratched in the eyes and neutered...Sure there were plenty of other crap filled movies but this one had a shit load of hype based on a national tragedy only to suck monstrous ass.

Again, that would be our friend Michael Bay.

By the way, though much worse than Michael Bay, Uwe Boll has agreed to stop making movies if the petition reaches 1 million votes.
