Title: What have you been watching? - 2/25/2014 Post by: Sunstroke on February 26, 2014, 12:23:33 am It's been 7 months (to the day) since the last one of these threads, so I figured it would be a good time to catch up on what shows have you glued to your TV lately. These are the shows on my weekly watch list. Thank God that I don't have to watch any of the commercials, or I'd have to cut at least one or two shows just for time considerations. Warning...if you aren't caught up on the individual shows listed below, they could contain spoilers. Supernatural - Angels on Earth, Crowley on the campaign trail and demons and monsters abound. This is season 9 with the Winchester brothers, and it's been 9 seasons of awesomeness. The Walking Dead - Glad the group finally left the prison, glad to see that Little Asskicker is still alive, glad to see Carol back again, and really enjoying the "deeper look into Michonne's past. I want to believe that the new burly soldier that is with Glenn and Tara is a good guy, but will reserve judgement for now. Arrow - Of all the shows on my list, this would be the one that I would drop, should I feel that I need to drop one. I'm half on/half off on whether the plot line is worth following, and if it wasn't for the geeky yumminess of Felicity Smoak, I might have already kicked this show to the curb. The Tomorrow People - Enjoying this show, and think that the Mom "coming out" makes for a nice twist. Still, if it weren't for Arrow, this would be at the bottom of my list. Almost Human - Really dig this show, both for the future tech effects as well as the chemistry between Detective Kennex (Karl Urban) and Dorian, his cybernetic sidekick. Not much of an overarching plot line, but the individual episodes tend to be very engaging. Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. - As noted about 5 episodes in, this show keeps getting better the longer it keeps rolling. Appreciate the fact that J. August Richards (Mike Peterson) has a continuing role, and am really digging Agent May (yum) and Skye (again, yum). Grimm - Excellent long-term plot that has the scenery bouncing back and forth from Portland to Austria, plus very entertaining individual episodes. Rosalie has a serious girl-next-door foxiness, especially when she actually woges into a fox. Person of Interest - Intensity, they name is Person of Interest. I am still in mourning over Detective Carter getting killed last season, but the show keeps churning out strong episode after strong episode. Way down the list of reasons to like the show, but worth mentioning...the Belgian Shepherd that Finch adopted might be the most beautiful dog in the world. Castle - I sometimes get behind a few episodes...it isn't a high-priority follow, but I always keep catching up. Good boob tube fodder for when there is nothing else on that's worth watching. Sleepy Hollow - Things have been ramping up lately with the Horsemen and the Apocalypse coming, but sometimes the acting in this one makes me want to drop it from my watch list. Sons of Anarchy - Season 6 ended so strong, and there is such a long wait until season 7 starts this Fall. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine - I am caught up to the beginning of the final season (7), and everything that Spidey said about this show has turned out to be 100% accurate. It has already replaced TNG as my favorite TV entry in this classic franchise. Seasons 5-6 were incredible, and season 7 is shaping up to be insane. Title: Re: What have you been watching? - 2/25/2014 Post by: Tenshot13 on February 26, 2014, 06:31:30 am The Walking Dead and Sons are on my list as well. Also watching,
Doctor Who (just started season 6...no spoilers!) Orange is the new black House of lies Shameless The Following (saw the 1st episode and liked it) How I met your mother Big Bang theory Face off Ink master The ultimate fighter-canada vs Australia Men at work Black Sails (highly recommend. Starz show about pirates). Vikings Since I've been watching Doctor Who, I've seen Simon Pegg, the red head English lady from the office, the Govenor from Walking Dead, and the main character from Black Sails. Those Brits get around! Title: Re: What have you been watching? - 2/25/2014 Post by: Phishfan on February 26, 2014, 09:32:05 am Currently:
The Following True Detective (New HBO series with Matthew McConaughey & Woody Harrelson) House of Lies Shameless Black Sails Agents of Shield How I Met Your Mother Big Bang Theory Waiting for new seasons: Vikings Game of Thrones The Americans Sons of Anarchy Hell on Wheels Title: Re: What have you been watching? - 2/25/2014 Post by: Sunstroke on February 26, 2014, 10:07:01 am Can't believe I forget to put "waiting on" Game of Thrones on my list... You both have two shows near the top of my "I wonder if they are worth watching" list, The Following and Black Sails. I'll have to give them a wee nudge up in priority. Title: Re: What have you been watching? - 2/25/2014 Post by: Dave Gray on February 26, 2014, 10:08:33 am Walking Dead: It has been great. I love how every episode is a little mystery and they leave things in the background for discussion and to figure out.
SHIELD: It's getting better, but they need to start doing some bigger tie-ins. I'm afraid this show isn't going to last. Everything I read says that it's not pulling in enough viewers, considering how much it costs to create the episodes. Downton Abbey: I don't know that this message board is the place where I'm going to find a lot of interest in this show, but it's a good one. I recommend. If anyone wants to know more about it, I'll explain. It's definitely good TV and the seasons are short and all the episodes aren't the same length. It's on BBC or PBS. House of Cards: Good first season, gotta watch the 2nd. Deep Space Nine: I've slowed on my watching, but will definitely continue. Family stuff has been nuts and it's hard to get the episodes in last at night. Title: Re: What have you been watching? - 2/25/2014 Post by: Phishfan on February 26, 2014, 11:12:49 am You both have two shows near the top of my "I wonder if they are worth watching" list, The Following and Black Sails. I'll have to give them a wee nudge up in priority. I liked season 1 of The Following more than I have season 2. Like most TV shows setting aside reality and just watching is key. As for Black Sails, pirates are a new concept for the focus of a tv program so I am intrigued. I am 4-5 episodes in and enjoy it but wish it would pick up some of the action. Of the new shows on my list, True Detective has by far been my favorite. Some people can be put off by one season taking up an entire story line, but I really like the dialogue and the way this one is playing out so far. Title: Re: What have you been watching? - 2/25/2014 Post by: Tenshot13 on February 26, 2014, 11:26:26 am I liked season 1 of The Following more than I have season 2. First episode was awesome because of the action, then there was a lull in action the past few episodes. The last episode that aired had some good action in it though. I think it will pick up from here. Title: Re: What have you been watching? - 2/25/2014 Post by: Dave Gray on February 26, 2014, 12:07:37 pm I would like to see TV make a switch to shorter seasons.
After seeing how the Brits do some of their stuff, it's so much better and easier to watch and follow. Downton Abbey has like 9 episodes a season. The first is an hour and a half, then the next 7 are an hour. Then the last is an hour and a half again. Then it ends on a 2 hour special. It's not this long, dragged out thing that you forget and miss episodes and has a bunch of filler. Sherlock does things similarly. I think Netflix is changing this stuff, too. Life is too complicated to following a live show for years on end. Get in, get out. Title: Re: What have you been watching? - 2/25/2014 Post by: Phishfan on February 26, 2014, 12:28:05 pm ^^^ I have to disagree completely for shows that I really enjoy. GoT has me hooked and I want more episodes than they deliver. The season goes by too quickly for me.
Title: Re: What have you been watching? - 2/25/2014 Post by: Buddhagirl on February 27, 2014, 01:05:32 pm House of Cards...oh my holy shit is Francis Underwood scary. And super sexy. I don't even know what that says about me.
Also watching SHIELD, Walking Dead, True Detective is on my list. Gotta see if it's on HBOGo. I'm also working my way through Murder, She Wrote because I have no shame. Title: Re: What have you been watching? - 2/25/2014 Post by: Dolphin-UK on February 28, 2014, 03:52:24 am I would like to see TV make a switch to shorter seasons. After seeing how the Brits do some of their stuff, it's so much better and easier to watch and follow. We find it really frustrating trying to watch a season of a US show...for a start we get it delayed by a few weeks but worse we're then held to your crazy mid season and random breaks so I'm happilly watching a show and then get told that there's abreak in the schedule for no apparent reason and have to wait ages for the second half of the season to come back on. Big Bang Theory - Season started and then stopped, started again and then stopped again, no idea when it will start. Agents of SHIELD - We got to the half way point but no sight or sound of when we'll get the second half, I'm not even sure I can remember what is happening! There are probably more examples! Title: Re: What have you been watching? - 2/25/2014 Post by: VidKid on February 28, 2014, 09:17:12 am It doesn't bother me that much. The schedule is the same every year. Show, holiday break, show, hiatus, then final season episodes. It's like when i was in school.
There are delays for the usual depending on network: playoffs, superbowl, award season, etc.. And since they are always around the same time every year, the shows all run the same every year. Growing up with that schedule probably makes it easier, but since my childhood had the same start, stop, start, stop, start, finish.. i'm good with it. Plus, there are shows that I watch live and shows that I record for like 8 weeks before watching. I just watch those while the others are on vacation. Title: Re: What have you been watching? - 2/25/2014 Post by: Phishfan on February 28, 2014, 09:27:13 am Exactly. The breaks all tie in to major events here in the U.S. Maybe they appear random in the UK since they are delayed from the start.
Title: Re: What have you been watching? - 2/25/2014 Post by: Sunstroke on March 06, 2014, 03:16:13 pm Going to add another show to my watch list, as I'm almost caught up with the first season... The Blacklist. My roommate watches this show, and I caught one episode a few weeks back and thought it looked pretty decent. So, I went back and watched it from the beginning, and it is pretty darned good. James Spader plays a role completely unlike anything I've ever seen him in before, and he does it extremely well.
Added to my "recommend" list for anyone who likes crime, government, conspiracy or other cloak & dagger type shows. Title: Re: What have you been watching? - 2/25/2014 Post by: Dave Gray on March 06, 2014, 04:30:50 pm I need to start watching True Detective. It sounds great.
Title: Re: What have you been watching? - 2/25/2014 Post by: Sunstroke on March 09, 2014, 12:30:50 am To the people above who have pimped True Detective, I have to ask one question. I watched episode 1 today, and it was the most depressing, chalk-on-nails TV I have seen in years. Everybody talking slow and bummed out, even the camera shots were seemingly designed to underscore a feeling of utter suicidal hopelessness. My question is: Are all of the episodes like that? I forced myself to watch it all the way through, but not sure I'd want to go any further if they all follow the same mood-recipe. Title: Re: What have you been watching? - 2/25/2014 Post by: Buddhagirl on March 09, 2014, 03:27:39 pm Yep. It's a pretty bleak show and it remains like that throughout the entire series. I love it! (Also I had no problem understanding them. Is this because I'm from the South?)
Title: Re: What have you been watching? - 2/25/2014 Post by: Sunstroke on March 09, 2014, 03:42:36 pm I didn't have any difficulty understanding any of the dialogue, but I am a trained (and cunning) linguist, so I speak Deep South fairly well. I just need a little less suicidal depression from my TV entertainment, so I'll probably abandon this show now before I find myself at CVS, stocking up on straight razors and sleeping pills. :-[ Title: Re: What have you been watching? - 2/25/2014 Post by: Buddhagirl on March 09, 2014, 07:26:52 pm Oh yeah. The episodes are depressing. Like wanna eat a bottle of xanax and swallow a bullet depressing. I guess I revel in that stuff.
Title: Re: What have you been watching? - 2/25/2014 Post by: mecadonzilla on March 09, 2014, 08:24:56 pm April is coming...
...and with it, Game of Thrones. It is known. Title: Re: What have you been watching? - 2/25/2014 Post by: Dave Gray on March 10, 2014, 12:00:01 pm Did any of you watch Cosmos last night?
It was really cool and the production values are high. Title: Re: What have you been watching? - 2/25/2014 Post by: Phishfan on March 10, 2014, 12:50:55 pm ^^^ I watched the True Detective final. I was told by a friend he felt like going to sleep because it felt like one of those junior high movies that everyone slept through.
Title: Re: What have you been watching? - 2/25/2014 Post by: CF DolFan on March 10, 2014, 01:28:19 pm Watched Resurrection last night. Not sure where this show is going but the premier left lots of questions to be answered. :o
Title: Re: What have you been watching? - 2/25/2014 Post by: Sunstroke on March 10, 2014, 03:10:43 pm ^^^ That's another show that looks interesting enough to give a 1-2 episode test drive... There's a new show coming out next week on CW called "The 100" that looks pretty intriguing. http://www.cwtv.com/shows/the-100 (http://www.cwtv.com/shows/the-100) Title: Re: What have you been watching? - 2/25/2014 Post by: Sunstroke on March 14, 2014, 02:04:16 pm While True Detective didn't make the cut, I am three episodes into Black Sails and am definitely enjoying this show quite a bit. The rampant nudity doesn't hurt, but what I really love is the plot line and the fact that it really isn't like any other TV show out there. Originality is way up on my list of show-judging criteria. Gates is definitely my favorite character to this point... Gates is definitely my favorite character to this point... Gates is one of my favorites. John Silver is so dislike-able, that I like him. Flint is kind of a douche. I don't mind any of the characters, except Bianca...can't stand her. Actually, I take it back, Blackbeard is my favorite character so far :) Title: Re: What have you been watching? - 2/25/2014 Post by: Phishfan on March 14, 2014, 03:44:26 pm I don't mind any of the characters, except Bianca...can't stand her. Jeez I was way off. I meant Max. Title: Re: What have you been watching? - 2/25/2014 Post by: Sunstroke on March 14, 2014, 04:21:30 pm Yeah, Max is gonna be trouble. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned...and then gang-raped by pirates. Title: Re: What have you been watching? - 2/25/2014 Post by: Tenshot13 on March 15, 2014, 06:51:52 pm BLACK SAILS SPOILER ALERT!!!!
Gates is definitely my favorite character to this point... Last episode, oh noooooo! Title: Re: What have you been watching? - 2/25/2014 Post by: Sunstroke on March 16, 2014, 01:08:29 am So much for my favorite character. RIP, ya scurvy walrus... Pretty incredible episode yesterday...should be interesting to see how Flint gets out of this one. Title: Re: What have you been watching? - 2/25/2014 Post by: EKnight on March 16, 2014, 10:31:49 am Wife bought me the first three seasons of Walking Dead for Christmas. Watched them over the winter break from classes once the baby got out of the NICU and have caught up on season 4. Really great show. If anyone has read the Gunslinger series by Stephen King, the character parallels are uncanny- almost purposeful. I know Frank Darabont is a huge King fan and has directed several screen adaptations of his novels, so maybe it is purposeful.
Other than that, the usual- Big Bang; The Mentalist; Person of Interest; sucker for Ghost Adventures; Last Man Standing; and The Crazy Ones, mostly because I'm a Robin Williams fan. -EK Title: Re: What have you been watching? - 2/25/2014 Post by: mecadonzilla on March 17, 2014, 07:37:46 pm I've really been enjoying the new Cosmos series. The only show I watch each week with greater anticipation is The Walking Dead.
Neal deGrasse Tyson is friggin' awesome. The original series blew my little mind in elementary school in the early 80s. I'm hoping this new installment is doing the same for folks all over the country. Soooooo many folks need to understand the vital role science plays in our very existence. Title: Re: What have you been watching? - 2/25/2014 Post by: Phishfan on March 18, 2014, 09:56:07 am I turnd the first episode off halfway through. I hope it got better than that.
Title: Re: What have you been watching? - 2/25/2014 Post by: Fau Teixeira on March 18, 2014, 10:35:13 am Cosmos is excellent . .it deserves a thread all of its own !
Title: Re: What have you been watching? - 2/25/2014 Post by: Dave Gray on March 18, 2014, 10:41:56 am ^ Agreed. I really like it.
Title: Re: What have you been watching? - 2/25/2014 Post by: Buddhagirl on March 20, 2014, 05:19:21 pm I LOVE Cosmos and discuss it with Fau often.
Title: Re: What have you been watching? - 2/25/2014 Post by: Sunstroke on March 20, 2014, 07:36:09 pm If anyone has read the Gunslinger series by Stephen King, the character parallels are uncanny- almost purposeful. I know Frank Darabont is a huge King fan and has directed several screen adaptations of his novels, so maybe it is purposeful. I've read the Dark Tower series a half dozen times through; it is one of my favorite pieces of fiction ever written. That said, I just don't see a lot of parallels between that storyline and The Walking Dead, unless you count a very broad interpretation of the world having "moved on." Title: Re: What have you been watching? - 2/25/2014 Post by: EKnight on March 24, 2014, 08:04:35 pm I've read the Dark Tower series a half dozen times through; it is one of my favorite pieces of fiction ever written. Daryl and Merl = Eddie and Henry Michonne = Susannah (both use bladed weapons as their primary defense) And if you don't see Rick and Carl as Roland and Jake, I don't know what to tell you. Pretty obvious, IMO. If you look for the parallels, they're all there. -EK Title: Re: What have you been watching? - 2/25/2014 Post by: Sunstroke on March 24, 2014, 08:35:50 pm Michonne = Susannah (both use bladed weapons as their primary defense) Susannah was a schizophrenic in a wheelchair...not seeing her and Michonne even occupying the same neighborhood. And if you don't see Rick and Carl as Roland and Jake, I don't know what to tell you. Pretty obvious, IMO. If you look for the parallels, they're all there. -EK I don't see them the same way at all, so the "obviousness" may be a locally isolated phenomenon. On a comparatively obvious front, I see Rick from Walking Dead paralleling Andy Dufresne in The Shawshank Redemption. Both have a pair of perfectly symmetrical nostrils. Title: Re: What have you been watching? - 2/25/2014 Post by: EKnight on March 24, 2014, 08:53:24 pm Good lord. If all you see Susannah as is a schizophrenic in a wheelchair, I think you've missed the point of her character. She's a gunslinger, every bit as much as Roland, Jake, and Eddie. And Michonne would step into that ka-tet effortlessly. -EK
Title: Re: What have you been watching? - 2/25/2014 Post by: Sunstroke on March 30, 2014, 02:25:20 am See, this is why I started this thread, to get the inside cheese on some good shows that I've been missing... Based on several recommendations at the start of this thread, I started watching The Following this past week and am now totally addicted. Talk about your epic intensity levels...I expect someone to get stabbed in pretty much every scene at this point. I caught up on the first two seasons in 8 days, which is Supernatural-esque on the TV addiction chart. Title: Re: What have you been watching? - 2/25/2014 Post by: Tenshot13 on March 30, 2014, 08:28:27 am See, this is why I started this thread, to get the inside cheese on some good shows that I've been missing... The wife and I did the same thing when we first started watching it. It's almost like there's a psychopathic murderer telling me, "just one more episode." Title: Re: What have you been watching? - 2/25/2014 Post by: DenverFinFan on April 01, 2014, 04:09:12 pm Just The Following and Hannibal, I only get networks with the converter box.
Title: Re: What have you been watching? - 2/25/2014 Post by: CF DolFan on April 01, 2014, 05:40:19 pm it was good .. mrs. fau cried a few times I didn't care for the ending. I thought Ted should have ended up with his wife although it was pretty much a given she died. As far as I'm concerned Robin was damaged goods after Barney and all those times of not having feeling for Ted. Title: Re: What have you been watching? - 2/25/2014 Post by: Phishfan on April 01, 2014, 09:52:55 pm I thought it was one of the better much hyped series finales I have watched.
Title: Re: What have you been watching? - 2/25/2014 Post by: VidKid on April 24, 2014, 03:17:23 pm For those watching Arrow... great episode. Very dramatic.
The best was the improvised line 'close your eyes' I really enjoyed it. Slade needs to die in a most painful fashion. Title: Re: What have you been watching? - 2/25/2014 Post by: VidKid on April 30, 2014, 11:10:04 am NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OO!!!!!!

Halfway through Firefly. Watched the first episode of Penny Dreadful. Horrible name for a show, but pretty good. Has a few known actors. Title: Re: What have you been watching? - 2/25/2014 Post by: Sunstroke on April 30, 2014, 01:30:30 pm NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OO!!!!!! http://variety.com/2014/tv/news/fox-cancels-almost-human-1201167294/ Agree with ya completely...that is too good of a show to go down after a single season. No disrespect to The Following, which I also watch, but I'd rather see it go away than Almost Human. Title: Re: What have you been watching? - 2/25/2014 Post by: Dave Gray on April 30, 2014, 01:41:14 pm I am fully caught up with SHIELD, Game of Thrones, and got a bit deeper into DS9...nearing the end of season 5.
Title: Re: What have you been watching? - 2/25/2014 Post by: Sunstroke on April 30, 2014, 02:32:06 pm got a bit deeper into DS9...nearing the end of season 5. You're just getting to the good part...seasons 6-7 are fairly damned awesome, imo. Title: Re: What have you been watching? - 2/25/2014 Post by: Dave Gray on April 30, 2014, 03:04:47 pm I like DS9, but it's rarely amazing. It's usually got a good episode and then a few fillers. Or at the very least a filler subplot. They are all fine and they aren't bad, per se, but I feel that the season length could be brought down to about 16-20 episodes that are just tighter and more interesting.
Title: Re: What have you been watching? - 2/25/2014 Post by: Tenshot13 on May 07, 2014, 06:59:29 am Just finished Firefly and the movie Serenity. Both really good and I almost wish Joss Whedon wasn't doing the Avengers franchise so more Firefly could be created. I hate how unfinished it is.
Now I need a new show. Debating between 24, The Wire, or maybe another sci if show. Title: Re: What have you been watching? - 2/25/2014 Post by: VidKid on May 07, 2014, 10:09:50 am Big fan of 24.
Jack's back. Was excited to see the offices, hear the clock ticking and of course see Jack / Chloe back in action. Can't wait to see where this limited run takes us. Title: Re: What have you been watching? - 2/25/2014 Post by: Sunstroke on May 07, 2014, 08:52:04 pm Just finished Firefly and the movie Serenity. Both really good and I almost wish Joss Whedon wasn't doing the Avengers franchise so more Firefly could be created. I hate how unfinished it is. Great series...great movie. The ultimate in space westerns. I became a fan of the show Castle just because I needed another Nathan Fillion fix. I am so behind on my shows this week. Work has kept me hopping, so I am almost a full week behind on my fave shows. The only two I've taken time to watch are Agents of SHIELD and The Blacklist. There's easily a dozen shows sitting in my DirecTV queue. It was basically unannounced.
I'll likely watch it this week. Here's the link for the trailer: http://inyoureyesmovie.com/ Note: I am one of Whedon's biggest fangirls. Period. Being written by Joss means I'll definitely watch it. The Summer months can be tough for finding quality programming and I'm not into baseball so sports will be in low demand. At least I'm going to have the World Cup going on for a while. I'm waiting for Longmire to come back. I usually watch America's Got Talent because they can usually find some act that is really cool. Has anyone heard of anything that might fill some open slots for me?

I've also got into watching The Americans and Bates Motel which I thought were well done. Dallas was also much better this year, they let the story lines play out much longer this season; but a couple are still a bit convoluted.

They really heavy-handed the original ending. I'll probably do a series-cram for Mad Men or 24...
