Title: TDMMC March Madness - CULTURE - Pirate Ship vs. Kissing the Bricks
Post by: Dave Gray on March 27, 2014, 01:51:40 pm
In Tampa Bay's stadium, a giant pirate ship is integral to the visual experience, shooting canons and housing partying guests.

It's become tradition to kiss the bricks after winning the Brickyard 400, started by Dale Jarrett in 1996.

I love the pirate ship and think it's one of the coolest stadium traits in all of sports.  It'd be a shame to see it lose this early.

I feel that there is no way I want to watch a game from the ship.

Kissing the bricks is a hallowed tradition.  People who visit Indy have their pictures taken kissing bricks.

The pirate ship is really cool, but after all, its just a pirate ship.  I love it when stadiums feature things like that.  The bricks goes back so far, though.

I thought so, too, but the thing I read said that it started in 1996.  That's also when Raymond James Stadium begun construction.

The Brickyard 400 didn't exist until 1994 so it couldn't go back very far.

They use the same track for the Indy 500.  I think the brick-kissing thing is related to the track, not the race itself.  I could be wrong.  The bricks at the starting line are left from before they paved the track in 1961.  I always thought the kissing of the bricks was something racers did at that speedway, and not necessarily tied to that particular race.

Edit to add - I stand corrected...

"1996: Dale Jarrett and his Robert Yates Racing crew began the tradition of the winning driver and crew kissing the row of bricks at the start-finish line,[9] which has carried over to the Indianapolis 500."

Even though I am not really a racing fan at all, kissing the bricks seems like a much more reverent tradition than sitting on a fake pirate ship inside a football stadium.

I guess that's what I was trying to say.  Reverent.  Good word.

^ What was all that in the other thread about unique stadium features?  A firing pirate ship built into the stands is pretty unique.

...over a song being sung, yes.

Kissing bricks isn't a song, is it?

I have a mental hierarchy of validity and, with a few exceptions, singing songs is very low on the list.
