Title: General Baseball Chatter Post by: Sunstroke on March 31, 2014, 11:45:42 am There should probably be a thread for general baseball chatter (hey, batta-batta), since the season "officially" started last night. And, since the season started out with my beloved Padres beating the Evil Blue Dodgers, the first post in this thread is one of celebration, with the anticipation of the 1-0 Padres going 162-0 this season and shocking the world. ;D Swiiiing, batta-batta! Title: Re: General Baseball Chatter Post by: Landshark on March 31, 2014, 12:12:59 pm Didn't they play some regular season games in the Land Down Under?
Title: Re: General Baseball Chatter Post by: Fau Teixeira on March 31, 2014, 12:50:08 pm i hear the marlins can't even sell out the home opener even with a $13 ticket on groupon.
good thing i'm contractually obligated to be a red sox fan now ;) Title: Re: General Baseball Chatter Post by: Sunstroke on March 31, 2014, 03:26:59 pm good thing i'm contractually obligated to be a red sox fan now ;) Only if your one of your goals in life is to be a bandwagon fan... ;) Title: Re: General Baseball Chatter Post by: Brian Fein on March 31, 2014, 05:44:19 pm Since I am a Marlins hater until the shitface owner sells the team, im trying out the Red Sox as my new team. But not to be a bandwagon jumper, but out of marital convenience.
So far, its not working out well. Im just not very invested in the team, emotionally. That seems to be a prerequisite for Boston fans. I always try to get into baseball every April. and every May, I wonder how much longer till football season. I thought maybe it would be different having a team to cheer for that has interest in playing beyond June. So far, not sure thats working... Title: Re: General Baseball Chatter Post by: Dave Gray on March 31, 2014, 06:12:44 pm Is there any repercussion to the Marlins sucking and nobody going?
Title: Re: General Baseball Chatter Post by: Landshark on March 31, 2014, 06:44:48 pm Is there any repercussion to the Marlins sucking and nobody going? Now the owner will see what it's like to really lose money. Nobody trusts him now. Title: Re: General Baseball Chatter Post by: EDGECRUSHER on March 31, 2014, 07:01:51 pm Now the owner will see what it's like to really lose money. Nobody trusts him now. I think he makes enough with revenue sharing and luxury taxes where if he didn't sell one ticket, he probably wouldn't lose money. REALLY lose money, not the bullshit lies MLB teams say about losing money. Title: Re: General Baseball Chatter Post by: Sunstroke on April 01, 2014, 10:37:45 am Had to post this...got a good laugh out of it this morning. Holy shit!!!! That brought back some memories Title: Re: General Baseball Chatter Post by: Brian Fein on April 01, 2014, 11:53:02 am Is there any repercussion to the Marlins sucking and nobody going? No. He still gets money from other teams, and he is obligated to keep the team in Miami for 20 years or something, from the stadium deal. The only thing that could happen is *gasp* maybe he sells the team. And take that sniveling weasel Samson with him.IMO, that's the #1 best move that would get asses back in seats. I know it would work for me. Title: Re: General Baseball Chatter Post by: AZ Fins Fan 55 on April 02, 2014, 10:50:00 am the first post in this thread is one of celebration, with the anticipation of the 1-0 Padres going 162-0 this season and shocking the world. ;D Whelp......there goes that. ;) Title: Re: General Baseball Chatter Post by: Brian Fein on April 02, 2014, 04:28:45 pm The 2-0 Miami Marlins still have a chance to run the table...
Just sayin' Title: Re: General Baseball Chatter Post by: el diablo on April 02, 2014, 06:54:02 pm Gotta love a guy who can keep the faith.
Title: Re: General Baseball Chatter Post by: Dave Gray on April 03, 2014, 12:01:58 pm I watched the bottom of the 9th last night. ...most baseball I've seen in a while. I was entertained, but the Marlins couldn't come back. Too bad.
Title: Re: General Baseball Chatter Post by: masterfins on April 03, 2014, 02:38:29 pm Boomer Esaison & Mike Francesa are idiots. They ripped Mets player Dan Murphy for missing the first two games of the Mets' season for taking the allowable 3 days leave to be with his wife for the birth of their first child. First of all its the Mets and they stink. Second of all its the start of the season. I could understand ripping him if he took the three days at the end of the season when the team was in the hunt for a playoff spot, but come on, guys are barely giving it their all at this point in the season. BTW Murphy missed the fewest games of any major leaguer last season.
Title: Re: General Baseball Chatter Post by: Sunstroke on April 03, 2014, 06:55:10 pm BTW Murphy missed the fewest games of any major leaguer last season. Not really an accurate statement. Murphy played 156 out of a possible 162 games last season, which tied him for 29th in the league. Four players appeared in all 162... The article I read said he only missed one game. Oh well. Who were the four that played in all 162 games? Title: Re: General Baseball Chatter Post by: Sunstroke on April 04, 2014, 04:09:50 pm Who were the four that played in all 162 games? According to the stats page on MLB.com, that group included Prince Fielder, Joey Votto, Billy Butler and Hunter Pence Title: Re: General Baseball Chatter Post by: masterfins on April 04, 2014, 05:59:03 pm Not really an accurate statement. Murphy played 156 out of a possible 162 games last season, which tied him for 29th in the league. Four players appeared in all 162... Actually it isn't all that far off. I heard again that he only missed one game last year, so I checked your source, MLB.COM, and it lists him as missing one game, tied for 5th behind the four players that played in all 162. Title: Re: General Baseball Chatter Post by: EDGECRUSHER on April 04, 2014, 10:04:54 pm Boomer is insane and I am kind of surprised he hasn't been fired. Not that I condone losing your job over stupid statements because I don't care, but that comment really dove into the world of lunacy. This isn't the NFL, there are 162 games. He can miss 2 to be with his wife and child. Game 7 of the World Series? Play ball. Opening Day for the goddamn Mets? Take 3 games off, the rest of the team did.

Not sure where you are pulling the info for that, or where the discrepancy is coming in. If you go to the MLB.com website, go to the statistics tab, select hitting stats, then select 2013, then click on the games played category to sort by that criteria...it shows 4 players at 162 games, and Daniel Murphy at 156. Title: Re: General Baseball Chatter Post by: EDGECRUSHER on April 05, 2014, 09:17:13 am Masahiro Tanaka had an excellent debut against the tough Blue Jays. 7 IP, 3 R 2 3R 8 K 0 BB.
His 3rd pitch in MLB was crushed for a HR, but he settled down nicely after that. He has some excellent stuff, it just seems like a matter of if he can take the new schedule and limit his mistake pitches. He threw a few last night that he was lucky to get back. In Japan, those are doubles. In MLB, they are souvenirs. Title: Re: General Baseball Chatter Post by: Guru-In-Vegas on April 05, 2014, 12:16:15 pm ^^^ I hate sounding like an all too familiar poster here on these forums but "I totally called it" Melky going yard on Tananka's first batter. I jokingly said "first pitch ... watch" :D. I was off by 2 pitches. =)
Pulled himself together and had a real nice one in the end. Title: Re: General Baseball Chatter Post by: Guru-In-Vegas on April 05, 2014, 12:20:25 pm I hope the Giants can keep it going against the dick-hole Dodgers. I'm very happy with our lineup so far. A lot of Giants fans were complaining we didn't do enough in the off-season but I LOVE the Michael Morse pickup. So far he's been solid.
What do you think, Stroke? As a Padres fan how do you like SF's chances to take the division? Title: Re: General Baseball Chatter Post by: Sunstroke on April 05, 2014, 12:29:08 pm I don't loathe the Giants quite like I detest the Dodgers and their eleventy gajillion dollar budget, but I always hope they lose anyway. They do have a good team though, and I expect them to at least make a run at the Dodgers. Title: Re: General Baseball Chatter Post by: masterfins on April 05, 2014, 04:09:52 pm Not sure where you are pulling the info for that, or where the discrepancy is coming in. Title: Re: General Baseball Chatter Post by: Sunstroke on April 05, 2014, 08:02:21 pm ^^^ Again, I'm going directly from what is listed at MLB.com for the 2013 season. If Major League Baseball's official website has the wrong stats posted, that's on them... Title: Re: General Baseball Chatter Post by: EDGECRUSHER on April 05, 2014, 09:02:27 pm After a 2 year layoff, Michael Pineda pitched an excellent game against the Jays, going 6 IP and allowing 1 ER. I believe it was 6 K and 0 BB. He lost because the Yankees somehow managed to have a $200 Million payroll and the worst infield in MLB and didn't score a run, but this rotation has a legitimate shot of being in the Top 10 if CC somehow manages to be league average. Probably not a true ace among the 5 and I don't see them making the playoffs with this old and inefficient lineup, but 3 young starters pitching well will more than satisfy me.
Man, that Jesus Montero/Hector Noesi for Michael Pineda/Jose Campos trade has been a disaster for both teams. Pineda's start today puts the Yankees ahead so far, but that just goes to show how awful and injured everyone involved has been. Title: Re: General Baseball Chatter Post by: masterfins on April 06, 2014, 12:51:33 am ^^^ Again, I'm going directly from what is listed at MLB.com for the 2013 season. If Major League Baseball's official website has the wrong stats posted, that's on them... Sorry, I wasn't clear in my last post. It is MLB.Com's website that says Murphy played in 161 games in 2013, and 156 games in 2012. I believe you may have accidentally clicked on 2012 the first time you looked it up. Title: Re: General Baseball Chatter Post by: Brian Fein on April 07, 2014, 10:01:18 am OK, so I checked. Neutral third party... Here's what I found... From MLB.com:

Not sure why it showed 2012 before...I would have to click on the drop-down box, as the 2013 season is the default setting, and I didn't click on that drop-down any of the previous times I saw the 156. Title: Re: General Baseball Chatter Post by: Dave Gray on April 07, 2014, 10:53:16 am I went to the Marlins game yesterday. Beautiful stadium. I'd been there before, but I forget how nice it is to watch your game and not be in your seats.
I hung out at the Budweiser bar in the outfield the whole time and watched the HEAT game on the TV there. It was fun. Title: Re: General Baseball Chatter Post by: MyGodWearsAHoodie on April 07, 2014, 10:54:53 am I went to the Marlins game yesterday. Beautiful stadium. I'd been there before, but I forget how nice it is to watch your game and not be in your seats. I hung out at the Budweiser bar in the outfield the whole time and watched the HEAT game on the TV there. It was fun. So you went to a baseball stadium to watch a basketball game on TV? Title: Re: General Baseball Chatter Post by: Dave Gray on April 07, 2014, 11:00:59 am ^ Pretty much, yeah. There is so much downtime in baseball that I watched both. You can fully watch the game from the outfield bar.
Title: Re: General Baseball Chatter Post by: el diablo on April 07, 2014, 04:23:58 pm Two series in, two series won. Not too shabby for a team with a makeshift starting rotation & nonexistent hitting from the Uptons & Co. Go Braves!
Title: Re: General Baseball Chatter Post by: el diablo on April 15, 2014, 08:00:09 pm Whoever woke up Justin Upton, Evan Gattis, & Dan Uggla, thank you.

Brutal. Title: Re: General Baseball Chatter Post by: EDGECRUSHER on April 16, 2014, 09:51:55 pm He did get hosed on that replay the game before. No excuse for not having the right angle when the Jumbotron did.
Title: Re: General Baseball Chatter Post by: el diablo on May 13, 2014, 09:59:00 am To all Marlins fans, my condolences for Jose Fernandez. Great pitcher, terrible injury.
Title: Re: General Baseball Chatter Post by: RichThrawn on May 13, 2014, 10:07:58 am To all Marlins fans, my condolences for Jose Fernandez. Great pitcher, terrible injury. He will probably need Tommy John surgery. What is it with these young pitchers getting hurt? Title: Re: General Baseball Chatter Post by: el diablo on May 13, 2014, 07:37:16 pm Who knows? My team is no different than others in suffering this epidemic.
Title: Re: General Baseball Chatter Post by: EDGECRUSHER on May 17, 2014, 08:27:28 pm I think the kids are throwing more breaking balls early on and it's affecting their arms. Gone are the days of the starters who just throw 97 MPH and not much else. Sliders and splitters put the most strain on your arm and lots of kids have these nowadays. You can never miss a start with Fastball/Changeup, but throw in a splitter as your strikeout pitch and off to Dr. Andrews you go.
Title: Re: General Baseball Chatter Post by: EDGECRUSHER on May 24, 2014, 09:49:55 pm The AL East is garbage. It's like every team just decided to be mediocre or terrible. The Yankees decided to give up in the offseason with their acquisitions, I don't know everyone else's excuse is.
