Title: TDMMC March Madness - HISTORY - THE Ohio State University vs. Sausage Races
Post by: Dave Gray on April 15, 2014, 12:37:07 pm
Wiki:The Ohio State University was founded in 1870 as a land-grant university in with the Morrill Act of 1862 under the name of the Ohio Agricultural and Mechanical College. The school was originally situated within a farming community located on the northern edge of Columbus. While some interests in the state had hoped that the new university would focus on matriculating students of various agricultural and mechanical disciplines, Governor Rutherford B. Hayes foresaw a more classic, comprehensive university, and manipulated both the university's location and its initial board of trustees towards that end. The university opened its doors to 24 students on September 17, 1873. In 1878, the first class of six men graduated. The first woman graduated the following year.[7] Also in 1878, in light of its expanded focus, the college permanently changed its name to the now-familiar "The Ohio State University", with "The" as part of its official name.[8]

In recent years, athletes have stressed the "THE" during player introductions.

Wiki: The Sausage Race is a race of sausage mascots held before the bottom of the sixth inning at every home game of the Milwaukee Brewers. The Sausage Race is a promotion for the Klement's Sausage Company, located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, whose sausages are served at Miller Park (and previously at Milwaukee County Stadium), the home of the Brewers. The mascots are officially known as Klement's Racing Sausages.

The race started in the early 1991s with just three sausages - the bratwurst, the Polish sausage (kielbasa), and the Italian sausage. Since then, two new sausages have joined the race - the hot dog, introduced in the mid-1990s, and the chorizo, which was unveiled and eventually joined the race in the mid-2000s.[1]

I loves me some sausages!

Plus, I always thought the emphasizing the "The" before Ohio State sounded all sorts of pompous.

If it was an old tradition carried out all these years, I'd be OK with the "THE".  However, it's just a douchey new thing.  The sausage racing is weird, and baseball is boring so they need random crap to keep you entertained.  I'm OK with it.

I will always remember when Randall Simon batted a lady in the head while she was racing as Guido the Italian sausage!
