Title: R.I.P. Tony Gwynn

He passed away today. One of the most feared hitters of his time.  Nearly impossible to strike out.

I am still in shock... As a diehard Padres fan since long before #19 came along, there is no doubt in my mind that Tony was the greatest Padre of all time. I own and have read his book "The Art of Hitting" many, many times.

Very sad news...baseball lost one of its best hitters and classiest acts.

On a personal side note, when I used to play softball every year, I had two "Padres tributes" that I wore every time I took the field. Across the thumb of every glove I ever bought, I wrote the name "OZZIE," in the hopes of channeling the leather mastery of the great Ozzie Smith. On the side of my cleats, I wrote a small "5.5," which is what Tony himself wrote on his own cleats. The 5.5 was a reference to Tony's favorite spot to hit the ball, right between 3rd base (#5) and shortstop (#6).

I am totally bummed out by this news. RIP, Tony. In my mind, you were the real Batman...

One of the best players to ever play the game and I mean that in every sense of the word. A total class act and feared player at the same time. He will certainly be missed.

Anyone know what kind of cancer it was? I had never heard anything about it.

^^^ Mouth cancer. Tony was a smokeless tobacco user.

As a lefty, he was a great role model for a little leaguer during the 80's. R.I.P. Tony. Missed ya ever since you retired.

One of the classiest guys in all of sports and one of my all time favorite players even though he played for the enemy.

R.I.P. Mr. Padre!!!!!
