Title: Cut Players
Post by: Landshark on August 30, 2014, 10:56:06 am
http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/08/30/browns-part-ways-with-veteran-wideout-nate-burleson/

Fins tried singing Burleson but he turned the Fins down and went to the Browns. Considering they just lost Josh Gordon I am a little surprised by this move. Miami won't kick the tires again since they are very deep at WR but this one was surprising.

Rams cut Sam today.

I saw a lot of gay people on Facebook asking how this could have happened and concluding that it was homophobia, plain and simple.

I saw a lot of untalented people on Facebook asking how this could have happened and concluding that it was Untalentedophobia, plain and simple... ;)

Does seem suspicious that someone who was projected in nov to get drafted round 2-3, became so untalented since then.

It does seem suspicious that some braindead draft analysts have a paying job guessing at the future...

I am not saying that it was definitely homophobia,  but given how much expectations drpped w/o a terrible proday, combine or camp, but corresponding w/ him coming out, you certainly have to wonder

He is kinda small to be a DE and kinda big to be an OLB. I think that has more to do with it. Him being a distraction and bringing the media circus is a big deal.

Honestly a team like the Cowboys who have a god awful defense and are a media circus anyway just because they are the Cowboys should sign him. To their practice squad at least

I have no issue with Sam not making a roster and think it's irresponsible to call it homophobia.  If the Rams were afraid of it, they'd never have drafted him in the first place.  He's a tweener player and they don't need him, I guess.   Nothing wrong with that.  Maybe he'll get work on another team, maybe not.  I think it was good that he was drafted and feel that if he'd play his way onto the roster, he'd be on the roster.

People call it homophobia but they are wrong.  Sam is a distraction, plain and simple.  Not because he's gay, but because the media is enamored with him.  If the media would treat him like "just another football player," like the entire gay community want him to be, then maybe he'd have a job right now.

The fact that a 3rd string tweener OLB/DE brings along cameras and reporters and questions and distractions makes him not worth the shot.  There are plenty of other players with his talent level that DON'T bring that kind of circus.

Distraction and a professional hindrance. You can't even ask the questions everyone really wants to know ... even the people complaining about the questions without the politically correct crowd calling for your job. You can't convince me that most people haven't wondered about the locker room shower question. It was a very legit question to someone who "comes out" if you ask me.

^^ I honestly haven't wondered about how he is in the shower.  Honestly.  I don't even care.

This really isn't accurate. Sam had some of the worst numbers at his position during the combine. He improved at his pro day but who shouldn't improve from being one of the worst performing people at the combine?

I think about how he is in the shower, but only after a couple glasses of wine... ;)

This whole thing got blown up by the media....how many other 7th rounders have received this much coverage. You are damned if you do and damned if you don't in this case because of the media!!!! I believe he was cut for football reasons and nothing more!!!!

Come on, who really didn't see this coming?  The minute the Rams drafted him, they were stuck with him, or would suffer the wrath of the gay community's accusatory "homophobe" comments.

There was no possible way he could be cut WITHOUT this kind of backlash happening.  Because, you know, all 7th round picks make the final 53, right?

I believe STL took one for the league on draft day.

Goodell had to realize that if the DPOY in The Best Conference In College Football™ went undrafted right after coming out, it would reflect poorly on The Shield.  So maybe some calls were made and a team that was already deep at LB, in Sam's home state, agreed to fall on the sword.

A third-string linebacker is not important enough to your team to be worth the media blitz.  You need to be a QB (like another recent example of a media darling whose play on the field did not merit the amount of attention he received) in order for it to be worth the trouble.

When a good QB comes out as gay, then we'll see a different story.

What backlash? This has been a pretty quiet event as far as my "world" has been able to see.

Cowboys have the worst defense in the league. If he can't make the Cowboys roster, he won't be in the NFL long.

A good portion of the LGBT community feels the move was homophobic. Nevermind the fact that they drafted him in the first place.

It's all over social media.

Yea, I don't care about Twitter or other methods of social media. Mainstream media and people in "my world" haven't said two words about the entire situation.

It's funny that you lump in mainstream media with people in your world when the mainstream media couldn't be more out of touch with the real world...

^^^ But apparently not this one since it is a big story on Twitter but not one anywhere else.

Yes and following Twitter really helps me to understand how the Kardashians fit into the real word. ::)

I use Twitter a few times a day and I have never read a single word about the Kardashians.

You can use Twitter for what YOU want it to, not just to follow Hollywood gossip.

I kind of think that was the point. He doesn't understand twitter because he doesn't use it. He doesn't need twitter to understand the real world.

And then proceeded to turn it into a bad analogy.

That's like saying I will never eat chicken because I don't want to know what lobster tastes like.
