Title: What happened on 2nd and 9?
Post by: Rich on October 15, 2014, 01:25:03 pm
Once again a play with 3 receivers virtually in the same spot.

Everytime I look at game film, I see a couple of these a game.

Or that is Wallace at the top who looks like he would be open if RT hits him in a slant or if he keeps running north. Perfect play!  ;D

1. Wallace is covered.

2. Notice the two defenders about to drill Tannehill into the ground?

It looks like its a play to get Clay some space and matched up with a safety as 42 from GB will have to break off Clay and cover the WR coming his way. But with the o-line doing such a terrible job here Tannehill has no time to get him the ball or make a good throw.

Yeah? If you throw on the inside you could hit Wallace. I was mostly joking but he's open if you throw it in the right place.

If you watch video of the play, it wasn't a slant. It was a deep route and that deep route is well covered.

Anyone have an idea of how much, if at all, Tannehill can change plays?

My understanding... and I could be wrong, but my understanding is the Dolphins use a check system where they call a pass play and a run play and that is the extent of what control Tannehill has at the line. I don't think he can call hot route routes or change the play. He may be able to set up some protection etc.

JJ did the same thing to Marino.

^^^ I don't know if Tannehill has the skills, but it seems to me that having a quarterback who's able to change a lot of stuff at the line has become increasingly valuable over the past decade. Certainly more prevalent and the quarterbacks who do so are generally very successful.

You really can't tell anything from one freeze frame shot. It sure looks terrible though. I wonder if a wrong route was run? Is the second from the top Landry? I can't see the number. Regardless, this play looks to me like that should have been a hot read. There was a blitz coming and it looks like that player was being played very loosely by a safety. An audible to a hot route there looks like it could have been effective on that play.

That was a power struggle. Marino was famous for changing plays from runs to pass and JJ desperately wanted to build a running team.

The still can be misleading, but there is also a video out on Ian Wharton's twitter of the entire play. Unfortunately, I am unable to post it here.

I think his twitter handle is NFLFilmStudy... check it out. He broke down a lot of film from the Dolphins Packers game and you can see where the failures lie... primarily offensive line.
