Title: Movies: All time favorites (Comedy)
Post by: Tenshot13 on November 09, 2015, 04:30:29 pm
D4L and I were discussing this in another thread.  Sound off a list of your favorite comedies all time.  I figured we could do this for other genres later like horror, sci-fi, drama, etc.

Favorites in no order:
Happy Gilmore
Napoleon Dynamite
The Big Lebowski
Office Space
Caddyshack

and if I'm going old school:  Some Like It Hot (1959)

Off the top of my head:

There's Something About Mary
Dumb and Dumber
Office Space
The 40 Year Old Virgin
Superbad
Ferris Bueller's Day Off
The Hangover
21 Jump Street
Shaun of the Dead
Scott Pilgrim vs. The World
Bridesmaids
Napoleon Dynamite

And there's a bunch of other stuff that I love that are comedies by IMDB standards, but I don't consider them as such: Back to the Future, Juno, Toy Story, Stranger Than Fiction, etc.

Rarely do I love straight-up comedies.  I usually like funny movies contained within a dramatic story.

Any one of those could make it in my list.  They're all very funny.

From my old post
Just curious why some sequels (HB2, PA4) are there, but not the first in the series.  i.e. I find HB way more funny than HB2.
Clue is very underrated and a great flick.

Because I liked the sequels better than the original

I have been a clue-aholic since I was very young. My family used to play the board game so often in the summer when I was growing up.  We also played the VCR version and computer game version.  I saw the movie and loved the book series.  I first saw the movie when I was very young.  I was too young to understand almost all of the jokes.  I was disappointed because I thought it would be a movie where the viewer would get to try to solve the crime at the end.  I watched it again for the second time in December of 2012.  It was hilarious now that I was old enough to understand the jokes.

There are many classics I really like as in Blazing Saddles, Animal House, Caddyshack, Monty Python, the Jerk, etc. to name a few  ... but very few movies made me laugh as hard as Porky's, American Pie, There's Something about Mary, and Hangover when they came out. The Sweetest Thing and Bridesmaids were pretty good as well.

Has anyone mentioned Idiocracy?

Or is that more of a documentary than a comedy?

Most of mine got hit...
Ferris Bueller's day off,Caddyshack,Spaceballs,Planes, trains, and Automobiles,Shaun of the Dead,Coming to America, etc. Great ones already mentioned..

For me it might not be the funniest movie,it can be quotable,it resonated with me for some reason,or maybe some thing I just really liked as a kid.(some of them I've seen Sooo much I'm not so in love with them, but still have place in my heart)
BeetleJuice
Time bandits
The World According to Garp <-- all time favorite movie regardless of category (long story)
Weird Science
With Honors
The terminal
My Cousin Vinny
This Is Where I Leave You <- most recent, had no expectations,I was bored.I watched it,and loved it...
Death at a Funeral - in the same vein as above...
The Great outdoors
the Princess Bride

I'm done for now

With Honors

It definitely had its funny moments, but I don't think I would categorize this as a comedy. Outstanding movie, and one of my "personal favorites," but I think it is more of a drama than comedy. Joe Pesci definitely kicks major ass in his role though.

^ Yeah,it's a comedy stretch, but IMBD listed it as drama/comedy.When I hit My Cousin Vinny,it said related with honors (Both are in my DVD collection)

The Jerk
All of Me
Two more I forgot...
