Title: ESPN's Cameron Wolfe: Fitzpatrick to Start Week 1
Post by: EDGECRUSHER on August 29, 2019, 08:36:41 pm
Terrible idea, just no reason for it. We need to see what we have in Rosen, not what we have in a 37 year old journeyman.

You need to have Fitz in there the first couple games or so because he's a more mobile QB.   You need to give the line time to gel.   The worst thing you can do is put a young, developing QB behind a bad line.   It will ruin him.

I agree except for the gelling part. This line is crap and won't ever gel, even more so if we trade Tunsil.

My take on this is that it's more desireable to have Fitzpatrick start the season and have Rosen take over for him at some point then it is for Rosen to start the season and have Fizpatrick take over for him. Essentially Rosen makes a better backup then Fitzpatrick does. You don't wan't Rosen looking over his shoulder, that's just added pressure that he doesn't need. Fitzpatrick has played his whole career looking over his shoulder, he's used to it and he knows it's only a matter of time before he's replaced so he can play without worry. He knows he's going to be replaced whether he plays well or not.

The problem I have is that we all know Fitz has hot streaks in him where he throws for 2,000 yards in 6 games and leads us to a 4-2 record. Then, he throws 13 INT's in 4 games. Not only do I not want us killing our 2020 draft position by winning meaningless games, I don't want Rosen to only come in during Week 10 and have a small evaluation window. You can't replace Fitz until he is garbage, otherwise the team revolts because they know you are tanking and they aren't going to risk injury for that.

Best case scenario for everyone is we start off 0-4 and Fitz has a 4:12 TD to INT ratio.

That will never happen. If we start off 0-2 unless the losses are like 35-30 or something Rosen is coming off the bench. No way Fitz will make it past 3 straight losses. And even if Fitz is playing well I don't see this team being 4-2. The first 4 games are gonna be tough. Fitz could play well and the team still be 1-3. That makes it tougher to bring in Rosen at that point, but still not out of the question.

Rosen said, it's only a matter of time before this team is his and he's right about that. Once that happens you don't want Rosen to ever lose that job unless he gets injured. This is the safe move. Whether it's the smart move or not is debatable.

I don't care what Rosen says. I hope this is Jake Fromm's team next year >:D

Seems to me that starting Fitz for the first 4 games and switching to Rosen at the bye has been the plan all along. I know it has been the most popular theory anyway. Barring Fitz and the rest of team balling out the first 4 weeks I don't see this not happening.

You're probably right and odds are Fitz will suck, but regardless of the team's record, if he has thrown for 13 TDs and just 2 picks in 4 games, he won't be replaced. That is my big worry.

If that happens then it was the right decision to start him. You can't argue that.

If your biggest worry is that your QB has a 7.5 TD to Int ratio, than you don’t have any worries.  If that happens it also mean Fins have fixed the oline.

If your QB is a 37 year old journeyman with no future on the team long term but is riding a hot streak that prevents you from evaluating a potential franchise player, then that is a worry. I only want Fitz to do well if he wins a Superbowl with us, everything else is wasted energy.

Dolphins have 99 problems and Fitzpatrick becoming Kurt Warner isn’t one of them.

Excellent post, I agree 100%

You need to stop putting so much attention on Rosen.  He's a throw away player, costing the Dolphins $1.2M, that's a cheap backup.  Compared to the $10M wasted on Cutler this is nothing.  One team has already dumped Rosen after just one season, ONE SEASON, and they drafted him.  Shows you how much they thought of him after drafting him in the first round.  How often do you see teams dumping their #1 draft pick after one season?

When they think they can upgrade with their next 1st round pick. 1 year is not enough time to evaluate a high draft pick. Especially when he had no supporting cast. Anyhow, what you guys think of Rudock? With a decent OL I think any of the 3 we have can succeed in the right environment. Fitz is the week link of the 3.

And that's fine if he sucks so we can draft a new QB in 2020. However, the kid is talented and Arizona is run like shit, worse than us. So, I'd rather give him a full evaluation and see if we got something in him, rather than a 37 year old before we decide on our future. I wouldn't be shocked if he is total garbage but I also wouldn't be shocked if he makes us think twice about using our first pick next year on a QB.

Makes even more sense to start Fitz now that Tunsil is gone. I predict he won't last more than 4 weeks. Rosen will be coming in by the bye week if Fitzpatrick makes it that long.
