Title: Is Chris Grier the man to use these draft picks?
Post by: CF DolFan on December 17, 2019, 09:06:45 am
I have serious doubts that he is. He's been here for years but people gave him excuses as to why past drafts were not on him. Well ... this past draft was all him and our rookie class hasn't been very good.

Preston Williams has been good but he wasn't even drafted. Neither was the guy who is arguably the second best on the team in cornerback Nic Needham.  We got lucky to get both of them. Our number one pick while high on personality is probably the third best rookie. He has not had a very good year (got abused last game) and has definitely not been a difference maker. On a horrible defense he doesn't even draw double teams. Michael Dieter has not been good on the offensive line.

Like I said ... I now have concerns about who is selecting our talent. What say you guys?

I would say it's harder to find starting caliber players as undrafted free agents, and we hit on two of them.  Chandler Cox was a hit in the 6th round.  Wilkins is ranked almost identical to Ed Oliver, who was drafted ahead of him.  I think it's short sighted to see him as not a good pick.  Deiter has been bad, but has also started most games.  He's a 3rd round rookie, I wasn't exactly expecting him to be good this year.  Tunsil who you seem to love so much struggled early on too.  Deiter has said he will be looking to transform his body over the off-season, so expect a more muscular player come next year.  Gaskins was a 7th rounder who is getting significant snaps.  Ginkle was hurt, so we don't really know what we have in him.  Prince isn't good, but he was a late round pick who will at best be a career backup.  I have very few concerns, these guys are young and need time to develop.  They also need help around them to shine, and they have none of that at the moment.

This is all pretty much going how I anticipated, Rome wasn't built in a day.  The next two years are going to be crucial.

While you didn’t get any all-pros, you got multiple starters out of the draft.  That is a good draft.

Yes, plus how good can one Guard be playing with the worst O-Line in the league? He is a rookie, let him work next to 1st rounders and/or top free agents next year to see how he does.

Same with Wilkins. Both lines will be transformed by next season.
