Title: How are you on supplies?
Post by: Dave Gray on April 13, 2020, 08:30:02 pm
Things I've noticed running low and not being able to find in abundance:

Cleaning Wipes/Sanitzer - I got one can today because the guy in front of me grabbed two and they wouldn't let him have it, so I took it.

Toilet Paper - I am running dangerously low.  Neighbors gave me 2 rolls.  The shelves were empty for our last 2 grocery rounds.  I haven't looked in multiple places, but I cannot miss another stock-up session or I will be wiping with a shirt.

Paper Plates - I got them now, but they were gone for a while.

Leinenkeugel Beer - Maybe unrelated to COVID19, but the last two times I shopped, it wasn't stocked.

Eggs - They were gone at first.  Luckily, my brother has chickens and gave me a dozen to float me.  I did get an 18 carton last week, but shopping today, I noticed the shelves are empty again.

What are you missing?

I had toilet paper since before the freak out. It is getting low. As well ... i work outside and have to touch things other do all the time. I'm worried about running out of hand sanitizer. I keep it in all my autos and they are all getting low.

Toilet paper I'm good on.   Just managed to get a hold of hand sanitizer.   What I'm not able to get are disinfectant wipes and Lysol spray

I don't use hand sanitizer at home.  I just wash my hands.

I bought a bidet after a trip to Japan a few years back, so while I have about 15 rolls of TP in the house now, that'll easily last me until the end of next year.  Like many Americans, I was uninterested in getting a bidet, but after trying one abroad I was convinced.  Now it is annoying to go #2 outside of my house.  And as stated, the TP savings are huge (you just need 2-3 squares to dry).

I had already bought my bidet when I got food poisoning and it was a lifesaver.

I'm fully stocked up on any apocalypse that may come our way at all times.

mouse traps are my only issue.

Fortunately for TP, paper towels and soap we had recently purchased at Cosco (not stocking up just normal purchase) so we are good on those items.

Can’t get wipes or hand sanitizer.  We have a very little amount of hand sanitizer but we are only using that for absolutely essential trips outside the house. Hand washing is superior to hand sanitizer anyway.

As for wipes, we have an adequate supply of bleach.  So i can mix that with water plus spray bottle.

There have been certain food items that were hard to come by particularly early on, but always enough other items that I can make do. For example I prefer to make chili with dried bean but those are sold out, but I can get the canned version.

LOL ... not at all. I've been buying large packs of MEGA rolls for years. One pack lasts us about a month and I typically have one on stand-by. I do a once a week trip to BJ's and try to keep a second of most things and then replenish the back-up as needed. I literally haven't bought any toilet paper or hand sanitizer since before everyone started freaking out.

TP, bottled water, bleach, and lysol are all sold out around me. Fortunately I have about 15 rolls in the cabinet above the toilet. And I always kept two 4 packs of double rolls in the closet in case I ever run out. I did find 5 packs of flushable baby wipes on the shelf the other day and I bought 2 of them. As far as cleaning products, I stopped at the liquor store and got a fifth and a 1.75 L bottle of Everclear. It was the last 2 they had on the shelf.

However, the pretty single mother of two small children at work told me that she was out of paper products, cleaner, and bottled water. So I picked her up one of the last cases of bottled water at the store. And gave her a package of baby wipes, a 4 pack of TP, and a half fifth of the Everclear. Told her don't drink that shit without my supervision, haha. Done my good deed for the month....

Not too bad here - toilet paper is the major thing there is still notable shortages of that I am concerned about, I have enough of the rest to hopefully ride it out.

In short, in Australia over the last 6-7 weeks there has been massive buying runs and limitations put on:

Toilet paper,
Tissues,
Paper Towels,
Hand sanitizers,
Liquid soaps,
Cleaners and bleach,
Dry pasta,
Rice,
Flour,
Tinned vegetables,
Frozen vegetables,
Long life milk

There were brief heavy buying of other items like mince (actually all kinds of red meat), bread, breakfast cereal and garbage bags, but stocks of those seemed to recover quickly within a few days unlike the above. Of those, long life milk, tissues, tinned & frozen veggies seem to be reappearing in smaller stocks, still lots of empty shelves of the rest though.

Coincidentally, there was also a big buying run on additional refrigerators and freezers, and plant seeds.... Some people seemed to be preparing for a zombie apocalypse style lockdown!

Better get some rat traps, word is the Rats have become cannibalistic in cities like NYC and New Orleans with all the restaurants closed up, whose garbage they lived on.

Those are sold out too.  But I am not worried about the rats, I live in the burbs, nearest restaurant is a half mile away and about 100 houses would get hit before mine if it closed.

Poison the rats. Traps suck

I don't understand why people are hoarding rice, bottled water, canned goods and baking supplies.  This isn't Hurricane Irma.

I don't understand why people are hoarding rice, bottled water, canned goods and baking supplies.  This isn't Hurricane Irma.

For some of this stuff, it isn't hoarding -- it's just that the demand has gone up and the supply can't match it.  This stuff is in a delicate balance and something that changes people's buying habits has a big effect.

Baking supplies -- we are baking more than usual, because we're home and we ain't got shit to do.  ...so having a nice cake at the end of the day is cool.  We don't do that when we're working.  ...and we're just one family -- extrapolate that out.  And then add in that people understand that cake mix is sparse, which reminds them of baking, and they're likely to pick it up if they see it....or for bakers to buy an extra box in case it runs out.  It takes time for the supply chain to catch up.

Start getting canned proteins.

Meat packing plants are closing in multiple states....fresh meat will have a supply problem.  That means that alternative protein sources (peanut butter, tuna, spam, beans)....they're going next.

Listen to this man.

Stock up on non-perishable foods, especially canned food, while you can.  I stocked up on a lot of chili right as this crisis hit.
