In the lockdown, I've gotten my hands on a SNES Classic.  My neighbor has the NES Classic and also just got a Playstation Classic.

I have some experience with Retro gaming thanks to MAME emulators and a gift from Spider Dan, more recently.  But most of the time, those things were nostalgia.  There are some cases where I'd play a game through, but a lot of it was loading up a game I already knew, playing a bit and moving on.

Recently, I've been trying to really play the games, progress, and beat them...or try new games.

Right now, I'm playing:

Super Mario World - This game is hard.  ...harder than I remember.  I wish you didn't have a number of lives and could play the levels until you beat them.  But I play with others and when you're splitting lives it's tough.

Donkey Kong Country - I was playing this with my family, who are younger and didn't grow up with this game.  I'm better than them, so it's hard, because when you die, they take over (and die).  If you play single player you get both lives to yourself.  I am progressing in this.

Super Metroid - Love this one.  More about exploring than super difficult fighting and death.  If you have a chance, revisit this one.  Fun, holds up...

Mega Man X - I've never played this, so I tried to start from scratch.  I immediately went to the Internet to find the best order to play the levels.  Mega Man fans know that it can be nearly impossible to beat a level when you don't have certain boosts from other levels.  I beat one level, but can't beat the 2nd.  I'm a little unfamiliar with the format.  I think I might have to go re-play stuff to grow my health bar or something.

I'm looking for games that have a save feature (or password feature), preferably a design that isn't supposed to look realistic (I think Mario aged way better than Tomb Raider, for example).  I like puzzles and platforming.  What do you suggest I play?

I don't want anything too long...like, no RPGs.  I'm not putting 100 hours into anything.

Battle Arena Toshinden--was the OG fighting game on the PS, not very good to be honest.  Kind of like Virtual Fighter or Tekken.

Cool Boarders 2--It was okay for the time, probably dated now.

Destruction Derby--Don't really remember

Final Fantasy VII--One of my favorite games all time.  It is an RPG though which you said naw.  I think it took me something like 60 hours to beat

Grand Theft Auto--complete overhead view, very different from GTA now.  It's worth playing for a little bit.

Intelligent Qube--I think you'll really enjoy this one Dave.  My best friend had it and we'd play it a lot.  It's a puzzle game, and pretty fun.

Jumping Flash--Don't remember

Metal Gear Solid--Also one of my favorite games all time.  This is definitely worth playing IMO, and you can beat it in under 15 hours, maybe even shorter.

Mr Driller--Don't remember

Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee--I played some sort of reboot of this, and it was a so-so side scroller.

Rayman--I never really played this, but it was really popular in it's day.

Resident Evil Director’s Cut--Resident evil is a classic.  The mechanics are clunky though, but it really scared me back when it first came out.  Not as good as Resident Evil 2 IMO

Revelations: Persona--Don't remember

Ridge Racer Type 4--Standard racing game

Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo--Not my style, but you might like it

Syphon Filter--This had some really cool original features that other games have expanded on since then.  It was really highly rated at the time

Tekken 3--My all time favorite fighting game, I'll wreck anyone in this and Tekken Tag haha.

Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six--Not my style, but really popular

Twisted Metal--Cars with guns shoot each other.  Twisted Metal Black did everything this game did and improved it.  Classic.

Wild Arms--This is one I wish I played but never did.  One of those games that had incredible reviews, but had a cult following and wasn't mainstream.

grand theft auto is like smash TV .. if you remember that arcade game .. but with cars

I have played the original GTA on PC back in the day.  I hope there's some kind of progress or save system.  That's what makes those games hard to revisit for me.

I think I want to try Intelligent Qube and Super Puzzle Fighter.  I like puzzles, so those should be new, at least.

I played one of the Oddworld games.  It's kinda like a puzzle platformer, if I remember...Remember lemmings?  Like that.

I don't think I've ever played Rayman, but I think it's sorta Sonic/Mario-ish, so I might give that a try.

Do you actually have the games for all of these or are you using an emulator? I'd love to try the old Super Metroid game, but on an emulator. Just never found a decent emulator and the actual games themselves always seems to be real wonky or something.

I have them on Super NES Classic, which is an official Nintendo product.  I assume the games are emulated, but they use a real controller. 

I have also played Super Metroid specifically on regular PC emulators.  It's a game that emulates well..it's not doing anything weird.  Some of those games that used FX chips or whatever get wonky, but Metroid is straight-forward.  I think you can get a good version of it on whatever emulator you use.

Side-issue, but kinda related, I saw that they're redoing Tony Hawk 1&2 for the new gen systems.  I really, really loved Tony Hawk 3 (missed the first two), so I expect I will pick this up.  Those games were super fun.

Of the PS Classic games, you'll probably like Rayman, Mr. Driller, and Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo.
