Title: Bill O'Brien Fired Post by: EDGECRUSHER on October 05, 2020, 05:00:31 pm Wow, did not see this coming. 100% deserved, he ruined this franchise for years to come but management gave him total control so I didn't think they would drop him. He is the GM as well so they need to fill that position too.
Hopefully, this doesn't motivate the players to do better. I want my Top 5 pick. Title: Re: Bill O'Brien Fired Post by: BuccaneerBrad on October 05, 2020, 08:27:38 pm I so thought it was going to be Gase or Quinn
Title: Re: Bill O'Brien Fired Post by: Dolphster on October 05, 2020, 08:38:35 pm For years, O'Brien has been a turd that wouldn't flush. How he lasted this long is a total mystery. My best friend and his wife and another good buddy of mine are huge Texans fan and they are all celebration drinking tonight.
Title: Re: Bill O'Brien Fired Post by: EDGECRUSHER on October 06, 2020, 08:20:14 am I so thought it was going to be Gase or Quinn It will be very soon for them as well, but I didn't think he would be the first to go, not after ownership gave him absolute power. Title: Re: Bill O'Brien Fired Post by: Dolphster on October 06, 2020, 08:43:15 am It will be very soon for them as well, but I didn't think he would be the first to go, not after ownership gave him absolute power. Same here, I was surprised that O'Brien was the first to go. Like you said, especially since he was given so much power over the team. We probably won't wait too long before Gase and Quinn join him on the unemployment line though. Title: Re: Bill O'Brien Fired Post by: EDGECRUSHER on October 07, 2020, 01:57:43 pm This is juicy. Apparently, JJ Watt confronted O'Brien in the lockerroom in front of everyone about his shitty coaching and it got heated. This was last week. He got the veterans on his side because he is JJ Watt and the players respect him. So, they lose this week and everyone had enough.
I don't think he ever coaches again, too much of an asshole who knows how to weasel his way into power. No GM would ever be comfortable hiring him for anything, nor would a head coach. Other thing to consider is that this may motivate the players and hurt our draft picks. Let's hope a Week 6 loss to the Titans drops them to 1-5 and depression sets in. Several players from the Titans broke NFL protocols and had an unauthorized workout at a high school, which is what caused the additional COVID cases. Word is, the NFL is coming down on them with an iron fist. They may have multiple players suspended. Additionally, they may be forced to forfeit their game against the Steelers. Right now, playing the Titans in week 7 will hurt the Steelers badly in week 8 against the Ravens because they now are forced to take their bye early, then get the Ravens who are going to be coming off a bye. Stupid protocols better not hurt our draft picks or I will complain online. Title: Re: Bill O'Brien Fired Post by: EDGECRUSHER on October 07, 2020, 09:36:33 pm Texans named executive VP of football operations Jack Easterby as the team's new interim General Manager.
I was just thinking that the Texans are in purgatory right now, they are 0-4 with a small chance at the playoffs. Even that, they weren't a contender anyway due to O'Brien's stupidity. They can't rebuild because they have no draft picks. What do they do? Move forward as is and hope for some 9-7 seasons or trade off assets ala Miami and start a rebuild that takes at least 3 years to get back to 9-7? How else can you explain all of his assistants and coordinators being shit? Would make sense considering everyone portrays him as a micromanaging dictator. No respectable person with an opinion would put up with that for very long. Title: Re: Bill O'Brien Fired Post by: MyGodWearsAHoodie on October 08, 2020, 02:30:00 pm Another fine member of the Bill Belichick coaching tree! I think back to this quote by Farve “MY CONTRACT DOESN’T SAY I HAVE TO GET AARON RODGERS READY TO PLAY, ....THERE IS NO CLAUSE THAT SAYS ‘YOU GROOM THE NEXT GUY WHO’S GOING TO TAKE YOUR JOB, OR ELSE.’ IT DOESN’T WORK THAT WAY.” Belichick’s job isn’t to groom future head coaches, its to fill Kraft’s trophy case with Lombadies. By that metric he is doing a fine job. By that metric he is doing a fine job. Very true, but it doesn't seem to be about grooming them to be future head coaches so much as that they are just ordinary schmucks who are riding his coattails and get exposed on their own. Let's hope Brian Flores is not the next one. Title: Re: Bill O'Brien Fired Post by: MyGodWearsAHoodie on October 08, 2020, 04:06:32 pm as that they are just ordinary schmucks who are riding his coattails and get exposed on their own. I don’t think it is quite that simple. I think there are multiple factors: 1. HC requires skills and knowledge not required to be an outstanding coordinator. And being using the limited time to teach those skills won’t help win games for BB he doesn’t waste his time on it. Other head coaches might be more willing to start a discussion, “here is something you might need to know when you become a head coach “. 2. They try to copy his techniques without understanding the logic behind it, thus it doesn’t work. 3. There are things BB can say and do to a player discipline or critiquewise and the player will respect it, because if the greatest coach in the game says it it must be true. But if a first year coach with a 2-5 record says the exact same thing the response is, “fuck you, you clueless fool”. BB has a credibility the others don’t have but they act like they have earned it and that comes across as arrogant. Title: Re: Bill O'Brien Fired Post by: Spider-Dan on October 08, 2020, 10:25:28 pm The most accurate analogy I've seen:
Great coaches like Paul Brown, Chuck Noll, Bill Walsh, and Bill Parcells teach their assistants how to make clocks. Bill Belichick teaches his assistants how to tell the time. Title: Re: Bill O'Brien Fired Post by: Spider-Dan on October 08, 2020, 10:32:02 pm 1. HC requires skills and knowledge not required to be an outstanding coordinator. Why haven't any of his assistant coaches went on to be successful coordinators elsewhere? Why do they all look like bums the moment they leave his immediate orbit? Title: Re: Bill O'Brien Fired Post by: Phishfan on October 09, 2020, 02:46:36 am Why haven't any of his assistant coaches went on to be successful coordinators elsewhere? Why do they all look like bums the moment they leave his immediate orbit? Why does that matter? If anything, you are just helping to boost the man's coaching legacy. He wasn't hired to make other coaches. He was hired to win and the fact his assistants sucks just helps prove how effective he is. Title: Re: Bill O'Brien Fired Post by: Spider-Dan on October 09, 2020, 01:50:39 pm Bill Belichick has a strong argument for greatest coach of all time. Not disputing that.
What I am disputing is that other organizations should hire his coaching staff. They shouldn't, because he's exceptionally terrible at developing assistant coaches. Title: Re: Bill O'Brien Fired Post by: MyGodWearsAHoodie on October 09, 2020, 04:48:06 pm Bill Belichick has a strong argument for greatest coach of all time. Not disputing that. What I am disputing is that other organizations should hire his coaching staff. They shouldn't, because he's exceptionally terrible at developing assistant coaches. Teams shouldn't trade with BB either, because most of the time two years later they look like fools. But they do. Title: Re: Bill O'Brien Fired Post by: MyGodWearsAHoodie on October 10, 2020, 10:15:29 am Why haven't any of his assistant coaches went on to be successful coordinators elsewhere? Why do they all look like bums the moment they leave his immediate orbit? The idea that no one else in the organization contributes is silly. But BB isn’t looking to hire assistant to groom them for elsewhere. He is looking for folks that fit the patriots system. Doesn’t mean they will fit elsewhere. Putting a Lamborghini transmission in a ford focus won’t improve the car, in fact it might not run at all. Putting a coordinator that has only operated in a highly efficient system in a dysfunctional one and he will be less able to cope with the dysfunction than someone use to an inefficient system. I had a coworker with 20 years experience in the army who absolutely could not cope with the lack of documentation and formal procedures. There was nothing wrong with him as a person, employee or tech and in fact he did a ton to improve the department in the six months before he quit. But he just couldn’t cope with our level of disorder. But I think the real key is BB has earned him a level of respect that allows him to act in a way that when he does it every one accepts it and when other copy it they are viewed as arrogant and foster a mutiny. BTW i am not advocating hiring NEP coordinators. It is tiresome seeing so many good ones leave. Title: Re: Bill O'Brien Fired Post by: Spider-Dan on October 10, 2020, 02:28:17 pm I'm sure there are many reasons why Belichick's coaching tree has been uniquely terrible compared to those of other great coaches. As you already pointed out, developing his staff so they can go on to have future success is not part of his job description. That would require something like empathy or a sense of paying forward the treatment you were given by those who taught you, neither of which help him "fill Kraft’s trophy case with Lombardies." Every minute that Belichick spends teaching his assistants how to have success in the future is a minute that he is NOT spending teaching them what they need to do for the Patriots to win next Sunday, which is Belichick's bottom line.
Not everyone is lucky enough to have someone like Bill Parcells as a mentor, right? Title: Re: Bill O'Brien Fired Post by: MyGodWearsAHoodie on October 10, 2020, 03:07:11 pm it will be perfectly fine by me if a division rival becomes the next casualty on the list.

No, the real key is that Belichick knows what he is doing when it comes to football. Many of his assistants, having not been taught anything of value, leave the organization and proceed to copy the only part of Belichick's approach they can: be a dick. The problem for his assistants has not been their arrogance; it has been their incompetence. If they had anything remotely approaching Belichick's success, their arrogance would be as warmly embraced by the ownership and players as his has been.
