He's one year into a 4 year $51 million deal.  $30 million of it is guaranteed.   

I was just coming to post something on this. He didn't have a bad year but not great either. This saves $9.8M in cap space.

$15 Million was guaranteed.

The cap savings jumps to almost $13 Million if it is a June 1st cut. Hope we have a backup plan since not everyone can be a rookie.

EDIT: I've seen the $15 Million and $30 Million number reported in different places. $30 Million guaranteed is a ton and they wouldn't cut him if he still had a good chunk of that left so I think it's $15 Million.

I'm kind of surprised by this. He was the anchor of a defense that took great strides. Last season, Van Noy was second all NFL linebackers in pressures (29, one behind Demario Davis) and had 69 tackles and six sacks, six passes defended and two forced fumbles.

We immediately will need to replace him and I find it hard to believe we will find better

I wonder if this is to free up for a guy like Von Miller or Shaq Barrett

Looking inside the numbers, he wasn't great last year but he was a respected teammate and cap space is only good if you use it so I guess we got some free agency plans.

It has to be for something, Ross isn't an owner who pockets the money.

He was solid last year and would have been even better if not for the injuries.  But just as important was the presence in the locker room and as a leader on the field for a very young defense.  I'm pretty surprised by the move.  But I wouldn't think they would do it unless they had some kind of a plan in mind.

According to Spotrac $15M was guaranteed at signing, and $30M was the total guaranteed amount; kind of weird - perhaps it was front loaded to use cap space last year??? 

So it looks like he earned $35.5M for a single season - $5.5M signing bonus plus the $30M guaranteed pay.  2021 Cap hit for the Dolphins is $4,125,000 in dead money (3/4 of the bonus, since a four year contract).

$15 Million was guaranteed for injury, so the guaranteed money is done and we don't owe him anymore. Would've been one of the worst deals of all time if we paid him $30 Million guaranteed. We structured it where it allowed us to cut him after 1 year and slightly overpaid for one year. Wasn't a bad deal, just didn't work out.

Not really.  Andrew Van Ginkel outplayed him, and Shaq Lawson is still around.  That's not even considering drafting a stud or bringing in a FA with the freed up cap space.

Okay that makes sense.  I was wondering why the only dead cap money for 2021 was the remainder of the signing bonus ($4.125M).  He still probably got $18.25M for the one season ($5.5M signing bonus, plus $12.75M regular pay (1/4 of the $51M four year contract).

Pretty good breakdown of why Van Noy was expendable. It's just one person's opinion but it's fairly well reasoned out.

Field Yates of ESPN reports that the team has not followed through on releasing Van Noy because they are trying to trade him.

Since it appears his contract only has guaranteed money for injuries going forward, he is worth a 6th rounder to some team.

Makes some sense, although I am still a bit surprised at the move (doubly so with Shaq Lawson now gone) - especially as it seems to have stung Van Noy personally, and the LB free agency market doesn't appear that deep to me to pull the move.

It will be interesting to see how/where Flores addresses these losses - will it be free agency or the draft?

He has signed with the Patriots and is furious at Miami, so expect him to have a monster year and destroy us twice this season.

We are just swapping players with the Pats non stop now.

Fuck him, it's a business.  He was decent last year but not that great.  We can do better.

I agree, doesn't mean that he sees it that way and will probably be a big asset to the Pats this year.

Miami really should have kept VanNoy around.  He had a heck of a game against Atlanta this week.

Yeah, he's been good for them this season and would definitely be an asset to us right now. We seriously screwed up the continuity this offseason by dumping all of our 2020 free agents.

Up until last week, Van Noy's PFF score has been in the 50s, he been pretty bad.  His game last week rated the highest of his career.  Other than the game last week he's been terrible.
