Title: Palm tree pruning
Post by: pondwater on June 30, 2021, 01:26:30 pm
I relocated to my parents house in FL after they both passed away last year. I have 3 palm trees in the front yard and they haven't been attended to for at least 14 months or longer. I figured there are a few members on the TDMMC from FL that might know about pruning palm trees.

I've read to prune it back so that they hang  from 9-to-3 in relation to a clock. I cut all the totally brown and obviously dead fronds and that has it hanging at about 10-2. But yet some of the fronds are still half brown and unsightly. What do you do with those? Just leave them?

I let my palm trees grow el natural.  Most people I know just have a company do it for them.

Mine is too tall to deal with. I just pick up the dead ones after they fall

Cut all the brown ones if you can. That's what I would do until they got so big my 21' ladder was useless. Typically some guys will pass by every few months and we will pay them to climb up and trim them.

This is probably not helpful, but we used to kinda just let it go for a while and then a truck full of usually Haitian men would come by, see they were overgrown, and make an offer.

My dad had over 50 palms on the property (that was his thing) and several of them were coconut palms.  So, the dudes would come by, trim, take the coconuts and move on to the next house.
