Title: Dolphins 1984 Draft
Post by: Dolphster on July 02, 2021, 08:13:04 pm
So, I was trying to think of something to fill this dead time before training camp starts.  Stumbled across the Dolphins' 1984 draft.   Holy crap, what a dumpster fire that was.  I would cut and paste it into this post, but I'm technology challenged.  If someone can add it, I would appreciate it.  Probably before the time of most of you here so the thread may not get much traction.  But for those of us old enough to remember it, it was horrible.

I nominate whoever was calling the shots for that draft for the ring of dishonor.   >:D

That draft was full of a lot of "who?" for me. The USFL was stealing a lot of talent at that time.

Jackie Shipp turned out to be a complete disaster, especially because of what the Dolphins paid to move up to get him.  Brophy was a sentimental pick due to the fact he starred on the Hurricanes 83 championship team.  Bud Brown had some moments in 1985.  The rest of that list is forgettable.  Not a single starter from that draft

Funny that you should say that because that is pretty much exactly my sentiments on those three guys.  Shipp was a dumpster fire for the exact reason that you stated.  Same with Brophy.  I was a HUGE Hurricanes fan and wanted to badly for him to succeed, but sentiment aside, he just wasn't good enough to be much of an NFL player.  And I'm glad to find out that I'm not the only human being on the planet who thought Bud Brown actually brought something to the field and was okay.

If you look at Shula's drafts, he had a lot more misses than hits.   Which leads me to believe Shula the GM wasn't anywhere near the caliber of Shula the coach.  But you also have to factor in that Shula the coach routinely was winning 8-10 games per year which put a handicap on Shula the GM.  Highest I ever saw the Dolphins pick in the Shula years was 9th.

Poor excuse.  Unless there is only 8 decent players in the draft.  Generally you should get contributions from rounds 1 -3.  Okay if you are drafting 32 and your 1st pick is almost a 2nd rounder than you should still get a quality 2nd and 3rd rounder out of the first two picks.
