Title: A look back at the happy times Post by: dolphins4life on August 24, 2021, 11:59:18 pm Before the Patriots had won their super championships. Miami was in the hunt year after year. What happened? Nobody can say for sure. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nJvAcXCYik0&t=781s (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nJvAcXCYik0&t=781s) I remember this game. The refs handed this game to Miami to give them their fifth straight payoff berth, but it was exciting. TWO Goal line STANDS

Title: Re: A look back at the happy times Post by: Fau Teixeira on August 25, 2021, 10:26:37 am It started with the stupid trade for Ricky Williams. We gave up way too much draft capital and that started us on a downward slope. Having a whole bunch of 2nd round QB busts didn't help at all. We once traded a 2nd round pick for AJ Feely for fucks sake. John Beck was a 2nd round pick. We'd have been better off drafting a QB in round one or round 5 instead of burning up 2nd rounders.
Also that whole Culpepper over Brees bullshit. I was at a draft party at the stadium when we passed on drafting Brees initially. Title: Re: A look back at the happy times Post by: Fau Teixeira on August 25, 2021, 10:34:36 am BTW, i think i was at that game.
Title: Re: A look back at the happy times Post by: EDGECRUSHER on August 25, 2021, 10:41:44 am We wasted a Superbowl caliber team with bad head coaching and refusing to get a better QB over Fiedler. Our drafts sucked too.
We also selected a LT with the #1 overall pick in 2008 rather than draft Matt Ryan. Decisions like that change the course of a franchise for a very long time. Title: Re: A look back at the happy times Post by: Dave Gray on August 25, 2021, 10:47:23 am I always look back at Jamar Fletcher as a WTF pick where I just couldn't wrap my head around it. We had 2 Pro Bowl corners and we spent our first pick on another corner who couldn't get on the field, when we needed major offensive help.
It was a series of things like this, but this one stands out. "I undervalued the most important position on the field because I am an idiot." The Ravens winning the Superbowl with Trent Dilfer messed a lot of teams up for a long time. They thought that was the new formula and not the exception, even though any half assed analysis would show you can't have a team not score an offensive TD for a whole month and still win on a consistent basis. It was a series of things like this, but this one stands out. Just one of many head scratchers for Wannstedt. Jamar Fletcher over Drew Brees/Reggie Wayne. Eddie Moore over Anquan Boldin/Vince Manuai. Being fleeced in order to get Vernon Carey. A second round pick for AJ Feely who then wasn't even declared the starter because Wanny was fixated on Jay Fiedler. I'm sick of hearing about Matt Ryan, he sucks, he's never won anything! Drafting Long was a positive, the problem is Mr. Field Goal HC let him play injured to try and save his own job, and Long got hurt worse and never fully recovered. Matt Ryan is a very good QB who had decent but unspectacular teams around him. His shit the bed performance in the Superbowl is certainly a black mark on his record but the Falcons lack of titles isn't on him, rather bad coaching and GM decisions. I mean, the team just went 4-12 and had a request from their superstar WR to be traded and they went and drafted a Tight End with the 4th pick instead of trading down for more picks. There is another 4-5 win season coming up and it isn't Ryan's fault. They went 4-6. in 2oo2, it definitely had an effect. Not sure about 2oo3. I don't believe they win those games with Fiedler that they lost with Greise. Odd thing about 2oo1. Miami could have had a bye that year. They tied with NE. NE won because of their division record.

Title: Re: A look back at the happy times Post by: dolphins4life on August 26, 2021, 03:30:57 pm After it was twenty eight to three, Ryan found Austin Hooper for a nine yard gain. Then, they got a holding penalty and a stuff for loss. If you watch the play, the RB doesn't get the football until he is four yards behind the scrimmage line. They could have simply run three quarterback dives and gotten the first down. Or you could try throwing down the field and then run two quarterback dives.

It wasn't so much that Fiedler was great, it was that Ray Lucas was disgusting garbage and killed our season. If Fiedler didn't get hurt in that Broncos game, the whole season is a lot different. There's certainly something to that thought although he would still have been better than anybody else Miami has had in that time period so it's hard to say what difference Brees would have made in Miami. What most people don't realize is that there is a very fine line between average and great so could Brees have made a difference? Who knows. |
