Title: Why are Dolphins not re-signing Gesicki? Post by: CF DolFan on November 19, 2021, 02:58:33 pm Both Mike Gesicki and Dallas Goedert came into the league at the same time. Both were drafted in the 2nd round of the 2018 NFL Draft and while some fans wanted Goedert, few were really disappointed in Gesicki. Seven draft picks separated the two but now, Goedert has taken the big step by signing a much better extension and his rookie contract. Now, Gesicki will continue to wait.
By not signing him now they are either not going to or they willing to pay him a lot more money than they would have as other teams will most certainly make a run for him. Either way in my opinion it further proves this admin is a bunch of idiots when it comes to talent. Title: Re: Why are Dolphins not re-signing Gesicki? Thing is, that creates some bad blood at times and you really don't want to use it twice so it would be in their ebst interest to get something done now. Especially since we basically only have him and Waddle to catch the ball so his numbers will be inflated and make his open market value that much higher.
Title: Re: Why are Dolphins not re-signing Gesicki? Post by: Dolphster on November 19, 2021, 05:36:46 pm I'd say it is way too early to know what the Dolphins intentions are with Gesicki. But as CF alluded to, the last 20 years have not instilled much faith in the Dolphins organization to do the smart thing when it comes to personnel. I think that if the Dolphins had just flipped a coin on ever personnel decision they have made in the last 20 years, they would have a higher percentage of getting it right than they have had by actually making a conscious decision about personnel moves. It is like getting a better score by "Christmas treeing" a multiple choice test than you get from actually trying to answer the questions correctly.

Now is the worst time to give him the most guaranteed money for a CB in history. Title: Re: Why are Dolphins not re-signing Gesicki? It's not like he's giving up a lot of huge plays, at least I don't think so. Title: Re: Why are Dolphins not re-signing Gesicki? Post by: fyo on November 23, 2021, 03:56:33 am ^ The problem with resigning Gesicki is that the recent top TE signings have been 14-15 million a year. Goedert just signed an extension with the Eagles at $14 million a year, as did Andres with the Ravens. Last year Kelce and Kittle signed extensions worth $15 million a year.
Gesicki is going to want something in that ballpark, I would imagine. Sure, you could reasonably argue that Gesicki isn't quite at the level of those other four, but you could also argue that two of those guys have Hall of Fame quality quarterbacks throwing to them. The drop-off in TE pay is pretty steep with the 7th guy earning "just" $10 million a year, dropping to $8 million by the time you hit #10. Adjusting for when the contracts were signed, there's no way we are getting Gesicki for less than $10 million a year. Probably more like $12 million as a floor. Is Grier willing to fork over that kind of cash? Title: Re: Why are Dolphins not re-signing Gesicki? If the Dolphins had a WR corps that actually played in games instead of being inactive, they wouldn't need to lean on Gesicki so much. So it is an interesting situation with Gesicki for sure. Post by: Sunstroke on November 23, 2021, 08:42:10 am I like Gesicki a lot, but one other thing to consider before opening the vault: As far as depth and overall quality goes, this might be the best TE class I have seen in a very long time...and they all get rookie contracts, not $14M+ Title: Re: Why are Dolphins not re-signing Gesicki? Post by: EDGECRUSHER on November 23, 2021, 09:02:07 am Thing with Gesicki is that he is very good but we have been very bad in general with QB play for him. Put him on the Packers right now and he's topping 1,000 yards this season. So, his numbers not reflecting a top tight end is really more on us.
