Title: I'm pretty sure I have COVID. Post by: Dave Gray on December 27, 2021, 11:24:06 am My daughter tested positive. I have the same symptoms (light cold) and tested negative, but we live together, so it's probably likely that I either tested too early in the cycle or that there's something going on where because I'm vaccinated and boosted that it's mild enough that's it's not showing, maybe??? I don't know the science of that, but it's just a hypothesis.
I think it's pretty unlikely that we developed independent sicknesses despite being all around each other for the last week. Also, my wife has been sick for probably 7 days, but she also tested negative early in that cycle. However, her symptoms seemed a bit different than mine. We've not had the ability to re-test. I waited in a line for 5 hours and 40 minutes yesterday to get a government-provided test because they aren't available in stores...everyone has COVID near me...friends and family, etc. I would never have waited that long, but I didn't know prior to getting in the line. They really do need some kind of sign that says "5 hour wait from this point". Anyway, there's really nothing to do but wait it out. My symptoms are very mild. Title: Re: I'm pretty sure I have COVID. Post by: Dave Gray on December 27, 2021, 12:07:05 pm In my circles, everyone is getting COVID, independent of each other.
Friends and family who all haven't been around each other are all getting it from different circles, but at least in everyone I know, everyone has been vaccinated and they've had mild (sometimes one day) or cold-symptoms and that was it, which is good. This Omicron being so dominant yet not as deadly might be our ticket out of this. Title: Re: I'm pretty sure I have COVID. Post by: Tenshot13 on December 27, 2021, 12:23:57 pm My wife is pregnant and AMA, so we're being extra careful. We got boosters early this month, not around anyone or do anything. I think we'll try to stay in a bubble as much as possible until little Tenshot is born.
Title: Re: I'm pretty sure I have COVID. Post by: SlothVomit on December 27, 2021, 12:53:33 pm Both me and my GF have Covid currently. She started to feel a scratch in her throat and tested negative. Then boom, full blown cold symptoms and tested positive 2 days later. I on the other hand felt great for days and tested negative twice in 3 days and then over night on xmas went from fine to sick as a dog and tested positive. It's nothing more than a cold, but we are both fully vaxxed and boosted. Maybe that has something to do with the symptoms being on the more mild side? I'd like to think so. She's on day 6 and feeling fine now and i'm on day 3 and on the up and up. We both are staying indoors and away from folks for the recommended 10 days. It really put a damper on our Christmas and new years but better safe than sorry for our families. I wonder when this whole thing will be just like the days of the past when someone is sick and we just avoid them the best we can at work and go on with our day.

I will say, I can report that so far, I've been boosted and things have been super duper mild....like less than a regular cold. Had I not known about COVID exposure and all of that, I wouldn't even be doing anything differently. Title: Re: I'm pretty sure I have COVID. Post by: Pappy13 on December 27, 2021, 02:45:30 pm My Daughter has it again right now. Tested positive yesterday. So far no symptoms for my wife and I, but she hasn't really been around us that much as she's been working the 2nd shift so she's been working all night and sleeping all day and I don't drive her to work much anymore. My wife had the booster about a month ago, I had my booster a little over a week ago so maybe we won't get sick. My daughter is not that sick, cough, congestion, cold like symptoms but no fever and nothing like the symptoms she had the first time around. Pretty sure this is the Omicron strain but the test she took didn't clarify what strain it was.
Title: Re: I'm pretty sure I have COVID. Post by: Dave Gray on December 27, 2021, 02:51:52 pm My PCR test came back negative as well. If I can find a rapid test in a day or two, I'll test again.
I'd almost rather have it at this point. Title: Re: I'm pretty sure I have COVID. Post by: ArtieChokePhin on December 27, 2021, 03:00:08 pm damn hope you feel better, its looks like pretty much everyone is going to get it now...thankfully omicron does seem significantly weaker Omicron symptoms: - Dry cough - Sneezing - Runny nose - Headache - Diarrhea When I was a kid, this was known as a cold. Note to Dave: I hope you and your family make a full recovery. Title: Re: I'm pretty sure I have COVID. Post by: stinkfish on December 27, 2021, 04:20:58 pm Omicron is weaker in those that have been vaccinated. The RN that I'm married to tells me that her hospital is starting to fill up again with CIOVID patients. Most make it a few haven't.
Glad that you've been vaccinated and boosted Dave and that you and your wife are just mild cases. How about your daughter? Title: Re: I'm pretty sure I have COVID. Post by: Spider-Dan on December 27, 2021, 04:39:07 pm Hope you and yours are feeling well soon, sir.
Title: Re: I'm pretty sure I have COVID. Post by: Dave Gray on December 27, 2021, 07:24:20 pm Both of my daughters (10 and 6) have had both vaccine shots. The 10 year old has cold-like symptoms, but has been dancing around the house all day and is fine -- but like any cold, it wears her down. Not a big deal.
The other doesn't have symptoms. My wife had it the worst of all of us and even in her case, it wasn't like the symptoms were diabolical. She just couldn't rest because she was planning for all of this Christmas stuff. She was mostly just tired and worn-out, but it lasted 7 days. Title: Re: I'm pretty sure I have COVID. I'm currently getting over the flu or something similar. Been running fevers since Saturday night but tested negative for Covid. Seems to have broken during the night.

But very quick but also not particularly foolproof way to determine common cold vs Covid ---- how is your sense of smell? Covid frequently results in loss of smell. Cold and most other stuff not so much. Not nearly as accurate as an actual test, but if you loss smell probably Covid. Title: Re: I'm pretty sure I have COVID. Obviously the Omicron variant is a lot different now than it was.Title: Re: I'm pretty sure I have COVID. Post by: pondwater on December 28, 2021, 03:32:35 pm I never got diarrhea from a cold. I never get sick, but actually on Miami's bye week I got sick. I went to the grocery store that Friday and got sorta drunk that Friday night, lol. Aside from a mid range hangover, I was fine Saturday. Sunday I got up and by the time the games started I started feeling bad and felt cold. So around 1-1:30 I got on the couch until about 11 am the next day. Only got up to use the bathroom and take a few bites of food standing over the kitchen sink, then back to the couch. The diarrhea started about 6 pm that sunday and lasted for about 20 hours. But very quick but also not particularly foolproof way to determine common cold vs Covid ---- how is your sense of smell? Covid frequently results in loss of smell. Cold and most other stuff not so much. Not nearly as accurate as an actual test, but if you loss smell probably Covid. Anyhow, my symptoms were cold/sweats, headache, and diarrhea. Never took my temperature, so not sure if I had fever. 24 hour stomach bug, food poisoning, or Covid? Hell, I don't know, but it was a miserable 24 hours. How long do Covid symptoms last? Title: Re: I'm pretty sure I have COVID. Post by: masterfins on December 30, 2021, 06:40:11 pm I think I may have gotten the Omicron variant because there have been plenty of cases in the region I live in. Came down sick Christmas Day with all the symptoms, except diarrhea, also had a severe sore throat for a couple days. After five/six days I'm feeling good again. I wanted to get tested today to check on whether I actually had it, but appointments are filled up for another week, and home test kits are out of stock for at least another week. Plus I had my booster just under two weeks ago and was told that you can get false readings within two weeks of the booster, so I guess I'll wait another week and maybe get tested then.

You absolutely CANNOT get a false positive on a PCR or lateral flow / antigen (home kit / rapid test) test. The vaccine causes your immune system to produce ANTIBODIES. The tests are looking for the virus (specific pieces of the virus). The antibodies have nothing in common with the virus, other than being able to attack it, so there is no way the test can make that mistake. Now, it's certainly possible to get an ANTIBODY test, which is rarely done and only useful in limited circumstances with covid. Both the vaccine and the disease cause the body to make antibodies. Title: Re: I'm pretty sure I have COVID. Post by: Downunder Dolphan on December 31, 2021, 09:08:31 am Stay safe guys! Get vaccinated and your boosters, use your masks in public spaces.
We are going though a Covid explosion here in Australia at the moment, and because the majority is the omicron variant they are basically gambling the level of vaccinations will be enough to keep people out of hospitals, and ICUs, and needing ventilators to cope... It all hinges on enough people not being sick enough to overload the whole health system. During Xmas and New Year, when a lot have time off and there's a lack of contact but also testing and people in hospital to treat them... but it is summer here which is an advantage. Like I said, it's a massive gamble we've taken here, the whole bet is on one side of the table. Fingers, and everything else crossed. Title: Re: I'm pretty sure I have COVID. Post by: Dave Gray on December 31, 2021, 11:50:58 am also had a severe sore throat for a couple days. Anecdotally, all of the cases I've known recently (and there are lots of them) started with a sore throat. Title: Re: I'm pretty sure I have COVID. Post by: Dave Gray on January 04, 2022, 04:42:07 pm Hey all -- update from me and my family.
I'm good. I had very mild symptoms. Mostly a little bit of a sore throat/lump in my throat that led to general sniffles and being tired. That lasted about 2 days and then it was recovery. I do still have bouts of that dryness or walnut in my throat feeling, but good otherwise. The rest of my family is pretty much fine. I think my daughter's symptoms were a little more than mine for one day, but not much. My other daughter never caught it or didn't show symptoms. I never tested positive. I tested negative, but pretty sure that I had COVID. It doesn't really make sense that I wouldn't considering I had the same illness as my positive daughter, one day lagged. I think I just tested a day too early. Either way, I couldn't get another test and I had to quarantine anyway, so I guess I'll never definitively know. Around me, everyone has this. Everyone. Nobody has it terrible that I know of -- my friends circles and family are all vaccinated (I only know a couple of holdouts), but most people I know have a breakthrough case directly or within their circle of exposure. Nobody can get tests here. They don't really have accessible lines and we are moving away from testing politically, so the numbers are probably through the roof. I think that we are on the road to being done, though. Between vaccines being readily available and everyone having the ability to get one that wants one, the fact that this variant seems less deadly in general, but especially not deadly at all in vaccinated and particularly boosted populations, and that Pfizer has this drug coming out that reduces fatality after symptoms of 90%, that would kinda be it. I don't know how the science will play out, but a yearly COVID shot (like the flu) for at-risk populations, coupled with continued partial immunity from contagion seems likely -- this might just be something we deal with from here on out and kills old people like the flu. This is my prediction as well, it might even be rolled in with the flu shot so we can get a 2 dose, 1 shot deal yearly Title: Re: I'm pretty sure I have COVID. I am thinking the same. Been getting the flu shot every year for about the last 10. Getting two shots instead of one every fall seems likely. But early indications are Covid immunity only lasts 6 months. I can stop at the pharmacy at CVS or Costco for 15 minutes in the spring as well. No biggy. |
