Title: Three cops found complicit in the murder of George Floyd
Post by: MyGodWearsAHoodie on February 24, 2022, 05:37:40 pm
Pleasantly surprised with the outcome of the trial.  Chauvin clearly committed murder.  But this should send a message to cops everywhere they have a duty to protect the public if another cop crosses the line.  The "it wasn't me, I was just a bystander" defense no longer applies to cops.

Then the message and your statement are in direct conflict with current law. The SCOTUS have ruled that police have no specific legal duty to protect an individual. Whether they are guilty of something else is an entirely different question

It's one thing to quote someone out of context, but quite another to cut off their quote mid-sentence to try to make a point that's clearly refuted by the rest of that sentence:

But this should send a message to cops everywhere they have a duty to protect the public if another cop crosses the line.

I'm pretty sure that SCOTUS has not ruled that cops have "no specific legal duty" to stop OTHER COPS when they see them actively committing a crime.

In this case, because Floyd was in their custody, they did.  But if they had seen another cop doing it during the course of their day, I don't think they would have to do anything.
