Title: What're you watching? 5/11/2022
Post by: Dave Gray on May 11, 2022, 11:41:08 am
Movies, movies, movies -- focusing on 1967 this month, but catching a few others here and there, as well.

I'm doing a Friends TV rewatch.  I have watch (almost) every single episode back when it was back-to-back syndication with Seinfeld.  There used to be a 2 hour block of 2 episodes of friends, 2 episodes of Seinfeld that came on right as I was winding down from school/work.  But I've never watched it in its prime or all the way through in order.  It's also really easy to watch, if I've been suffering through some old, silent film or heavy, foreign one.

I started Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. -- I dragged my feet on Season 2 of Picard....was watching other things at the time, so I jumped right into this.  I've only seen one episode, but so far, it feels much more like old Trek (specifically TOS and TNG) that anything since.  I think people are really going to like it.  It's accessible and even though some characters have crossovers with other series, I feel like you could pick this up having never watched Star Trek before.  And I really like the guy who plays the Captain.

Abbott Elementary -- It has a very Scrubs/The Office/Parks and Rec/Brooklyn 99 vibe, but set in a poor school in the ghetto.  They're still kinda figuring out their characters but I like it so far.

I'm going to watch Severence on Apple TV when I'm ready to step into the next thing substantial.

My wife and I just finished Downton Abbey.  It was surprisingly good.  Skip the movie though, it didn't have much substance.

I just finished the The Pentaverate.  The critics hate it so you know it's good.  If you liked Austin powers humor, it's that with more cussing.  I found it stupid funny.

Bosch is back with a new show, Bosch Legacy.  We just started it, very similar to the old show.

I liked the Downton movie, but I watched it well after the show was over.  Maybe I was just starved and it worked like a reunion....not sure how it would play if you just finished binging the show.  I'm going to see the 2nd one in theaters...I'm pretty excited.

I've been waiting for this thread so long I have actually completed some of these. I know it's Dave's thing so I didn't want to start one.

Moon Knight I found slo but I kept going back.
Outer Banks season 2
Ozark final season
Winning Time is great. You don't need to be a Lakers fan
Bill Maher & John Oliver are constant
I'm always looking for an interesting documentary

Tony Hawk: Until The Wheels Fall Off on HBO Max was very good.

It's not like you have to be a Tony Hawk or a skateboarding fan.  It's one of those things that is bigger than that -- the themes are universal and it's very much a movie made for laymen.  The skateboarding industry rise and fall and rise and fall every decade is super interesting and many of these guys are much more intellectual than you'd think.

I watched it with a friend who literally had never heard of Tony Hawk and she loved it.  (How does an adult never hear of Tony Hawk?)

----

One last thing about Downton Abbey.

That show is trashy.  People who have never seen it kinda assume it's high-brow entertainment, but it's essentially a salacious soap opera, but set in a very prude era.  It's also quite funny.  I enjoyed it a lot.

I hate that I love it.

I forgot to mention Ozarks as well.  My wife hated the ending, but I liked it.  I can't really give my opinion without giving it away though.

I've been avoiding any spoilers. I'm looking forward to how it wraps.

Wouldn't have hurt my feelings had it ended differently either ...  hahaha.

Cursed Films: Cannibal Holocaust

The real behind the scenes story of the infamous movie. It's on Shudder. I wouldn't recommend watching the movie unless you can find an animal cruelty free version as they kill real animals in the film. It's very messed up but has it's place as the first found footage film and led to murder charges for the director as they thought he really killed the actors. Interesting story.

Strangely enough, this is not on my important movie list that I'm going through, but it has a notable place in history.  I believe the director had to show up in court with the actors to prove that he didn't kill them in real life.

I hear this show is so good.

I think I watched one episode when it first debuted and just couldn't commit to the format of a weekly show over years.  I probably will give this the full binge when it's all out in a singular place.

Yes, but he made them sign contracts that stated they couldn't appear in public for a certain amount of time, so he brought it on himself. It was Blair Witch over 20 years before Blair Witch.

But the film is brutal, very little artistic merit. I wouldn't recommend it.

I'm re watching Community On Netflix. Re watching 24 on IMBD, or whatever it's called now. Just finished up something on Netflix called We Are All Dead. (I love what the Koreans do with horror). I'm going to turn to this new Star Trek series on Paramount+ that I think Dave mentioned. It's a prequel I think to the original Star Trek. Got nostalgic and watching Angry Beavers on Paramount+.

Yeah I'm watching Community as well, I never watched the last two season.  24 was great, my wife and I binged that last year on Freevee (used to be IMDB).  All Of Us Are Dead was good.  If you liked Squid Game and All of Us Are Dead, give Alice in Borderland on Netflix a shot, it's pretty good.

I just watched the first four episodes of Bosch Legacy over the weekend, I liked it.  I didn't care for the last season of Bosch on Amazon, so I was glad this season is better so far.  I guess they are issuing a couple episodes every Friday.  I'm getting caught up on some past episodes of the Rookie on ABC, I missed about a month's worth.  I've watched Downton Abby a few times, never watched the first movie, now they are advertising for another movie coming to theaters May 20th I believe.
