Title: How long have you played fantasy football?
Post by: Dave Gray on August 16, 2022, 02:06:03 pm
I started in 2000 and have played every year since.  The game has changed a lot and gotten more pass-heavy.  More QBs and WRs are in the conversation as first round picks and that used to feel rare.

I don't keep up like I used to -- not even close.  I used to have strategy all through the off-season that I was fine-tuning towards the draft.  Now, I grab a print-out on my way out the door.

Where are you at in the fantasy journey?

I played for 3 or 4 years but gave it up after an experience where I had Pennington as my QB my opponent had Brady.  My wallet would benefit by Pennington and the Jets having a good game but Brady having a good game was important for Patriots post season.  After that I stopped playing FF.

When it comes to betting/fantasy sports, I never have problems like you describe.

I had no issue betting what I think will happen.
I also have no issue rooting against my financial interest about what I want to happen.

I always value the Dolphins doing well over any bets or fantasy implications.  Granted, if I'm betting, it's gonna be like $5 so who really cares.

This was our super bowl so I think it was $150 if I won and $25 if I lost. So while not life altering money, not an insignificant $5 either.

"Supposedly," I am among the earliest players. This is my 39th year in one form or another, back to the days of graph paper and next-day Stars and Stripes boxscores.  I wrote for ESPN's Fantasy Football from '98-99 with a column called "Chalk Talk," and then for Draftsharks.com and MVP Weekly doing their Upside Reports until 2004. I ghost-wrote for an NFL handicapping site for a few years as well.

Yes...I'm a junkie. :-)

I only played one season. One year i had a couple friends that had to miss their draft because of work. They  had me sit in for them. It worked pretty well as i took some players neither would have considered. One finished second and the other won his league.

I believe that you can't win your league from the draft, but you can lose it.

It's about 1/3 draft, 1/3 free agency & paying attention, and 1/3 dumb luck.

I know one guy who is quite successful who claims the secret is to tank week 1.  I guess in his league the first person on the waiver wire makes all the wire transactions he wants before going to the second person etc.  So he plays the bottom of the roster then drops the bottom of his roster for the 5-7 guys nobody had on their radar that emerged week 1.

When you drated the top RB and receiver both for the year you can
