Title: Chris Rock's Netflix Special "Selective Outrage" Post by: Dave Gray on March 08, 2023, 12:57:09 pm What did everyone think?
I guess it's kinda cool that it was live, so that it was a talked about event, but it didn't really add anything for me. I probably would just prefer it be a little edited to get mistakes out and have a smoother set. He had a few mistakes but overall it was smooth. I love Chris Rock. This special was okay. I think it's just harder to be an in-touch comedian when you're old and rich. It makes you less relatable. Comedy is best when you're "punching up" and it's hard to do that from the top. He did have some pretty insightful bits here and there and I think that the 2nd half was definitely better than the first. I kinda cringe whenever a comedian sounds like a boomer complaining about whatever social norms are different than when they were young. It's always a tired shtick. Some of the jokes had merit, but were lacking another layer of the onion to lay on the social commentary and I think it's just what happens when you're crazy rich, have famous friends, have ultra-privileged kids, divorced your wife who took half your money and now are trying to date regular women. It's not gonna be relatable men/women jokes. It's rich/poor jokes and they just aren't as funny to a comedian who is making $40 million dollar for one special complain about how a girl he's dating needs help fixing her roof. The Will Smith stuff was more interesting than funny. I think Rock is pretty correct about what happened. That shit had nothing to do with him. |
