Title: Are cats supposed to puke regularly?
Post by: Dave Gray on April 26, 2023, 09:56:49 am
My cats are always puking.  It's annoying, because they have no self-awareness and they will just puke wherever they are.  On the couch, on rugs.  It's gross.

And it seems to be for different reasons.  Sometimes it's hairballs.  One of them is a jack-off and eats any plant he can find until he pukes.  And another one just drinks water until he's so gorged that he yaks it up.

They are on pretty high quality food and we've tried different things.  I don't recall previous cats in my life being this barfy.

I think some are more prone but it is fairly common

Actually, I was having that issue with my inherited geriatric diabetic cat. She was eating 2 meals a day when I got her but by the time dinner meal came along she would basically inhale it and puke it up. So I divided her calories into 3 meals and added a lunchtime meal. That only helped to an extent, she would still go eat and puke. Basically like you said, just anywhere she was. So after a few times of her puking into the back corner of the couch where it would leak down into the cracks. I decided to start feeding her in the garage for every meal except for a few treats when I give her insulin. I just put her food out and leave her in the garage for 30-45 minutes.

For the first few days she looked at me like I was fucking crazy. But now she's used to it and runs to the door meowing for food. She still pukes on the garage floor a 2-3 times a month. But the frequency has gone way down, it was 2-3 times a week when I fed her inside. It's a lot better to clean it up in the garage than having to scoop it out of the bowels of the couch. Plus I have a privacy screen on my garage, so I can leave the actual garage door open and she can get some fresh air and watch the birds and squirrels. Usually she's just sleeping on the rug though.

Hairballs or actually puking? Either way a food change should help.

My cat was puking her food. Either she eats too fast or has a sensitive belly. Since she's diabetic and eats a diabetic food, there aren't many choices to change to.

It's usually food.  But like I said, not always.  Sometimes huge amounts of water.  Sometimes because they ate plants or flowers.  I can limit it some but it's just like pondwater says.  I can clean up a puke, but when it runs down the crack of the couch, that's just too much.

If you have a garage or porch just feed them there. How long after they eat do they puke? My cat was anywhere from half way through eating to about 15 minutes after. I originally did it because the garage floor is easier to clean up than rugs and furniture. But for some reason it cut the puking occurrences way down

I don't really know the timeline of eating to puking because I often don't see it.  We have a porch.  That's where the most recent pukes are.

So I just took on my friends 17 year old cat because he works out of town all week and he's in the process of selling his house and moving a couple hundred miles away to Buffalo (he's a Steelers Fan).  So when he drops the cat off I'm told of the puking problem, he says it's not all the time "but it's just something cats do".  Anyways he feeds the cat food for sensitive stomach, and he elevates the bowl and this supposedly helps.  The cat hasn't puked yet, but she is getting used to her new surroundings and didn't eat or drink much the first two days.  Hopefully this doesn't become a problem.

Enjoy your new little friend. And buy some cheap disposable food serving gloves to scoop that shit up with LMFAO

Cats are supposed to be put outside. Puke all you want out there.

You can get a slow feeder which might help her slow down when eating. I have to use them with my dogs or they do the exact same thing. They are afraid the others will get their food.

Per Google ...

Are Slow Feeders Good for Cats? Most cats will benefit from a slow feeder or food puzzle, Becker says, and not only for mental stimulation. "One of the problems with cats eating freely out of an ever-full bowl is obesity and what we call 'scarf and barf.

It seems a little cruel but really seems to help.

Yeah so the cat I took in started puking fairly regularly after a week, kind of surprises me because she doesn't eat that much.  For now she pukes on this low pile carpet so it's easy to clean up.

Since she's diabetic she doesn't free feed. I measure and prepare her meals 3 times daily. And it's really not a lot of food, just enough to keep her weight stable. Between that and all the other shit I have to do everyday, it's like I have a 2 year old child who never grows up LMFAO
