Title: Miami Dolphins, general manager Chris Grier agree to part ways
Post by: CF DolFan on October 31, 2025, 11:29:59 am
The Miami Dolphins are making what could be the first of many major changes moving forward.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Dolphins and general manager Chris Grier have mutually agreed to part ways.

Glad that piece of shit GM is gone.   Every single big move he has made ended up backfiring.   Hopefully they will hire someone with pedigree.

I don't think we should dump McDaniels. Not at least until we give him a QB who isn't limited and trenches that are not a libility to what plays you can call. It would really suck to see him succceed elsewhere.

Why do you gotta call the guy a piece of shit?

Everything I hear about him is that he's a good dude and people liked working with him.  He made some bad choices, sure.  But also his owner cost him draft picks with some bullshit tampering.  He needed to go and I'm glad he's out, but I can't hate the guy.  He's been part of the team I love for 25 years and he helped bring in some superstar talent and a really fun offense a few years ago.  Show a little bit of class on his way out, eh?

I never said he was a piece of shit person.   I'm sure he's a nice guy and he's easy to work with but he definitely was a piece of shit GM.   I also follow the Bucs and when Dennis Hickey, who is one of the worst talent evaluators I've ever seen, came to the Dolphins from Tampa in 2014, he brought Grier with him.   It was Grier who had a big hand in reaching for Juwon James in the first round of the 2014 draft when the Dolphins were so desperate for offensive line help.   James was, at best, late second round material.   It was Grier who also made the decision to trade Larmey Tunsil, then messed up the 2021 draft by wheeling and dealing picks when he could've stood pat or simply traded down and still gotten the QB he wanted.  It was also Grier who blew one of those picks from the Tunsil deal on an aging and injured pass rusher (Chubb).   As a result of his horrible decisions, the team is capped out and has an offensive line that is held together with pipe sticks and glue and a defense that is just as bad as Olivadotti's defenses in the late 80s.

I think McDaniel's deserves more of/second chance.  But forcing a GM to keep a coach rather than pick his own guy rarely works out well.

+1

He wasn't terrible.  He had some good draft picks.  Unfortunately, some bad picks, bad contracts, poor coaching, and player injuries (many coming together at the same time) doomed his career with the Dolphins.

I'm sure the incoming GM will be given a chance to bring in a new coach or keep McDaniel. Up to him. If McDaniel stays it will be the GM's decision.

The good thing about this move is that it prevents Grier from making self-centered personnel moves to try to save his job, at the expense of the organization's future well-being.

Exactly what type of personnel moves would benefit Greir but not the Dolphins? A GM's job is tied to the success of the organization.

He could make a trade(s) for example that's intended to make the team win now and salvage this single season to the degree that he's more likely to keep his job, but which could also not be in the franchise's best interests in future seasons.  Trading draft picks for players is a great example.

You mean what he has been doing for the past few years.

Perphaps, but when a GM is on the hot seat he may be prone to cranking the volume on that even more than he has in the past.  You have to get him out of there before he has a chance to do it, hence the primary value of the mid-season firing.

He has never made a long term move.  The real value in an early firing is quieting fans and media and give you ahead start in talking with the agents of potential replacement

No malice intended, but if we are staring down the barrel of another rebuild, then it's the right time to move on from Grier.

I don't think his draft choices were any worse than Ireland's, but not really much better either. They both seemed to have the knack of trading up to get the wrong guy, and their speculative picks more often than not bombed.

Probably the biggest downfall was his salary cap management, and the choice to change mid-rebuild to go for it all in 2023. Did he misread the position the team was in, or was instead pressured by Ross? Or McDaniel? It's hard to say - although he did seriously misread the state of our own OL, when most fans knew it was in dire shape.

It was time for a change, and it's better happening now before he makes other moves a new GM will have to wear in a few months time.

It better be.   If Ross insists on keeping McDaniel, then he clearly hasn't learned from that debacle after the 2013 season that caused this organization a ton of embarrassment.

Hopefully he allows the new GM to make the decision about McDaniel, and the new GM has a football IQ of at least room temperature, which would be the minimum required to fire McDaniel.
