Title: Australia WTF? Question for Downunder
Post by: Phishfan on August 11, 2026, 12:26:23 am
I was just in a sports bar and being a slow time for live sports there was horse racing on. Normally I detest the sport and could not care less but it was in front of me and I couldn't help notice the horses were running the track turning right which is completely opposite of tracks here.  I Googled the name I saw and found out it was an Australian track. Is this common down there?

Horse races are required to be run in the same direction that toilets flush cyclones spin.

They also drive on the wrong side of the road.

Not to mention the snow falls in June and July, but it's beach weather in December and January.

Horse races are required to be run in the same direction that toilets flush cyclones spin.

Not true.   They do for humans but not horses.

It depends on which State - New South Wales, Queensland and the ACT they run clockwise, and in Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania they rum anti-clockwise.

That would go back to pre-federation colonial choices when the states decided that for themselves, and there has never been a national decision to override them.

For horse racing, dog racing and human running direction is a completely arbitrary decision.

For auto racing it depends on which side of the car the steering wheel is.

People take these arbitrary decisions very seriously.  Me and my friends would some times play kickball or whiffle ball with the bases in reverse order and it would drive onlookers nuts.

Doing things in reverse order or with the opposite hand is good for the brain. It causes you to use part of the brain that you weren't previously using. For example, try brushing your teeth with opposite hand and see how much more you have to think through the process.

A week with a sprained wrist was more the enough of that.

Try writing a letter with your non-dominant hand and see how your handwriting really looks.
