Title: Top 10 thrill rides at WDW
Post by: CF DolFan on January 30, 2006, 05:16:12 pm
After Brian's review of Expedition Everest and Dave calling me out here is my top 10 thrill rides for WDW.

1) Mission Space - this is the one ride I haven't riden and am not planing to ride. I've seen enough sick people come off to know I don't care to ride it. I also don't like the confined box they put you in. Any ride that comes complete with barf bags has got to be good!
2)Rockin' Roller Coaster - The sound track while spinning is awesome. This ride should be longer!
3)Tower of Terror - Combining story with ride has never been better.
4) Expedition Everest - After careful consideration, it's hard to find too many rides at WDW better than this. Long live the Yeti!
5)Space Mountain - a roller coaster in the dark that has stood the test of time.
6) Test Track - something about that 60 mph loop gets me every time!
7) Splash Mountain - Is there a bigger drop on any of the other rides?
8) Soarin' - We've determined this ride is important to where you sit. Middle of the front row gives the best "trip"
9) Big Thunder Mountain Railroad - I don't know why but this ride takes me back to high school every time I ride it.  That's the mid to late 80's for those of you counting!
10) Star Tours - Nobody hooks you up like R-2!

That's it. Nothing special but how does this list measure up to you guys? I'm especially curious about those of you who haven't had the pleasure of riding them over and over again until they get mundane.

Thanks for the list, CF.  I have not been on all of these, but I would like to comment on some of them:

1) Mission Space - Never heard of it.  Which park?  Can you describe the ride?
2)Rockin' Roller Coaster - Fun, but short.
3)Tower of Terror - I went on this long ago and was impressed with the effects used on it.  I don't, however, like the falling feeling, so rides that ONLY offer that don't do it for me...I prefer speed and loops and stuff.
4) Expedition Everest - Sounds cool.
5)Space Mountain - I think that if this were released now, it'd be lame, but just because you've seen it so many times, it's cool.
6) Test Track - I've never done this one -- I know it's at Epcot -- how does it work?
7) Splash Mountain - Again, not much for the "drop feeling".
8) Soarin' - Never heard of it.  Elaborate.
9) Big Thunder Mountain Railroad - Fun, and not too crazy....good to go with younger kids.
10) Star Tours - I'm a Star Wars geek, so I like it, but other than that, it's just okay.

Thanks for the list, CF.  I have not been on all of these, but I would like to comment on some of them:

1) Mission Space - Never heard of it.  Which park?  Can you describe the ride?
It's at EPCOT. A couple of people died last year after the opening. They had medical problems and the ride found it.

You climb inside a rocket and blast off to Mars. Gary Sinise is part of the flight control and there are four of you, I think, inside. As you blast off and again when you break into the atmosphere it pulls several Gs. You are actually spinning very fast but do not realize it as you are locked into this space capsule and only have the screen in front of you to see. People either love this ride or hate it. There is no in between that I have come across.  The capsule is too small for me but my wife and kids love it!

5)Space Mountain - I think that if this were released now, it'd be lame, but just because you've seen it so many times, it's cool.
I thought this too but recently rode it again with my kids and found it to be fun. It's more jerky than the newer ones ... I'm not sure why they haven't upgraded the tracks but it was still fun. This was the first time I had ridden it in about 15 years.

6) Test Track - I've never done this one -- I know it's at Epcot -- how does it work?
It's like being on board for GM to test the car for which you are driving. They set up different obsticles for you to manuver through, over and around. Brake tests, heat and cold and a crash test where the car goes thru the wall and gets out of control as you travel 60 mph around the outside of the building. It seems pretty fast for the small car you are in that's for sure. Luckily it stops just before you actually crash into something.

8) Soarin' - Never heard of it.  Elaborate.
This is one of Epcot's newest rides and it came from Disney's California Park.  You ride in a Hang glider ... feet dangling and high above the floor. I think there is even wind. It lifts you up  in front of a huge screen. You "Soar" thru many scenic flights as your glider moves to the rhythm of the scene it is showing. It is very easy to get lost in the moment. The ride ends as you travel across the Magic Kingdom at night and disappear into the fireworks display that is going on.

I've been on Mission: Space.  Its kinda lame, definitely not #1 on the list.  You won't get sick on it, it only spins.  If you can handle the G's of a coaster, you can most likely handle Mission: Space.

My top 10:

1.) Tower of Terror (MGM)
2.) Expedition Everest (Animal Kingdom)
3.) Soarin' (Epcot)
4.) Rockin' Roller Coaster (MGM)
5.) Big Thunder Mountain Railroad (Magic Kingdom)
6.) Summit Plummet (Blizzard Beach)
7.) Space Mountain (Magic Kingdom)
8.) Splash Mountain (Magic Kingdom)
9.) Test Track (Epcot)
10.) Mission: Space (Epcot)

As an avid theme park goer, I'd love to point out my own opinion.  I'll also write my review about Universal later on:

1) Mission Space - I agree that this is not for the faint of heart (or people with heart problems for that matter).  It gives you the feeling of an astronaut dealing with lift off.  My chest felt like an elephant was standing on it.

2)Rockin' Roller Coaster - A little too short for my liking, but for people who fear fast roller coasters, focusing on the awesome music helps them get over it.

3)Tower of Terror - Hold on very tight, or expect your butt to come flying out of the seat when this drops you straight down.

4) Expedition Everest - Never had a chance to experience this.  Which park is it in?

5)Space Mountain - This was THE RIDE when Magic Kingdom first opened in 1971 and maintains it's popularity today.

6) Test Track - Never experienced this either.

7) Splash Mountain - Don't ride this if you're afraid of getting wet.  Also has the longest drop of all log flume rides in Orlando.

8) Soarin' - I agree about the position of your seat being important, but you'll get an awesome view regardless.

9) Big Thunder Mountain Railroad - Runaway roller coaster that's perfect for the little tykes who are too short for the rides above.

10) Star Tours - Blast off to save the galaxy from the Evil Empire

Speaking of Epcot, I finally found out what it stands for!!!!   Considering that Epcot is the largest of the four major Disney theme parks, and you have to walk all the way around that huge ass lake to see all the different countries because the ferry schedules are inconsistent, Epcot stands for:

Every Person Comes Out Tired
